  • Cosy peaceful site in the little-known Mecsek mountains
  • Tours/activities including Jeep rides, goulash nights and Pécs trips
  • Wine tasting, kids' craft sessions and on-site reflexology
Ssh, not a lot of people know about this. 'This' being the local of Hungary's lovely Nature Camping Máré-Vára, set in a valley in the spectacular and green Mecsek mountains, in the Baranya region about 30 kilometres north of Pécs. This isn't a spot where tourist hordes descend in summer – or any time – so if you're seeking a peaceful and scenic setting, but with easy access to spectacular Pécs, this is the place to lay your hat (for some time: there's quite a bit to get stuck into around here, including several hiking routes leading from the grounds). Máré-Vára's forest setting is within a nature reserve on the eastern side of the mountains, within walking distance of its local village. The team runs regular trips and tours straight from the site, and activities on site, for all ages and tastes: you could tag along with their Dutch-speaking guide to take in the pretty sights of Pécs; crash through the forest on a Jeep tour; or stay on site for wine tasting (hurrah), craft sessions for kids, or (more hurrah) a back, neck or foot pamper by the on-site reflexology expert. Hungarian dishes are frequently cooked for guests in cauldron bogrács – think goulash (but of course), stuffed cabbage, stuffed peppers and a tasty array of other local dishes. If you're cooking up your own goulash and the like, basic supplies are in the two small village shops, or you can drive to two major supermarkets in under half an hour. Fresh bread is available to buy on site daily, and coffee, cold drinks and ice cream are sold from reception to have on the terrace. A pool is just opposite the site for mountain-based dips; another is about 10 minutes' drive away at Szászvár.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Everything!.. Stayed for 2x nights. A friendly welcome on arrival and during our stay.. We we're just out of season so lovely and quiet!.. Toilets and showers were kept immaculately clean. Handy washing machines available to use for a small fee. Would definitely, without hesitation, stay here again if in the area.. We also caught the bus to Pécs right outside the campsite so didn't need to move the van for the duration of our stay.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: The campsite was quite quiet and spacious (although we did go in May). The host was also really lovely and had lots of local knowledge to give me. It was in a good location as it was rural and peaceful but also not too far from shops etc. Also the bathrooms were very clean!

Local attractions

Take your pick from heaps of things to see and do from Máré-Vára, sticking close to base for a car-free break, or driving short distances for wildlife watching, spas, city sightseeing, a national park and three of Hungary's wine regions. The site is set on several extensive hiking routes around the eastern Mecsek mountain range, close to a riding school and within easy reach of tennis, fishing and mountain biking, just outside the village by the famed old castle of Márévár. Trips of all types are available from local village Magyaregregy, such as (ready?… you'll need a few weeks) the Hungarian wine regions of Siklós, Szekszárd and Villány, the spa resorts of Komló Sikonda, Magyarhertelend and Harkány, or he cave and bat museum of Abaliget (where meditation sessions are often held too). Castles can be ambled around at Pécsvárad, Siklós and Szigetvár. You'll need at least a few days in Pécs, about half an hour from Máré-Vára by car or just over an hour by bus. The city was once European Capital of Culture for its many sights including remnants of Roman and Turkish times: among the highlights are the ancient mosque, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Necropolis of Sopianae, the 11th-century cathedral and the 12th-century Hungarian Bishop's Palace. For shopping, potter around the Old Town or the Arkád shopping centre, where a big flea market is held every Sunday. Just over an hour away, the Danube-Drava National Park includes part of the Ramsar wetlands, as well as the famed Gemenc forest, home of mighty stags, boars, herons and eagles.
