  • Family-friendly campsite on the edge of Château-la-Vallière
  • Two minutes' walk from Val Joyeux Lake and its beach
  • Pétanque, play area and small store; cafés and shops 10 minutes’ walk
Grass pitches at Camping Le Val Joyeux are scattered around both open and tree-shaded areas – but whichever you go for, you’ll be surrounded by a peaceful Indre-et-Loire forest full of centuries-old oaks and just a couple of minutes’ walk away from the beach area on the banks of Val Joyeux Lake. The atmosphere here is very much one of rural peace – but in fact the location is just on the edge of the pretty town of Château-la-Vallière, so you’ll be just 10 minutes’ walk from shops and places to eat. (And if you can’t be bothered to walk that far, you can stop in at the small shop on site, which also hires out towels and bed linen and gives out sightseeing advice.) This location puts you within easy reach of lots of Loire Valley days out, including châteaux, gardens and the AFTC Cyclorail 37. And with Val Joyeux Lake a couple of minutes’ walk away you won’t have far to go for swims (supervised from the beach in July and August), fishing, orienteering trails and kids’ games. Back at base there’s a pétanque court for a bit of gentle competition, and a play area to keep the tiddlers busy. Other facilities at this family-friendly site include a launderette, washing-up area, showers and toilets.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Very calm and quiet site. Lovely surroundings, in a very quaint village. The staff are really friendly and pleasant, and the price for a solo traveller was very cheap. I would definitely stay here again.

Disliked: The toilet/shower block wasn’t very private, so could be of slight embarrassment to some.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Nothing but pitches could be lovely if maintained.

Disliked: Toilets and showers dirty. Large groups of children running around all night. We should have been notified of large groups of children staying on a quiet site. Vehicles driving in after 11pm No toilet rolls Lights in toilets didn't work

Local attractions

It’s very much worth starting your break with a stroll around the pretty town centre of Château-la-Vallière (10 minutes’ walk) – and then perhaps heading out into the woods for a ride on the AFTC Cyclorail 37, where you’ll pedal a fixed bike along a disused railway line. Val Joyeux Lake (two minutes’ walk) is your closest place for watery activities like swimming and fishing; for more aquatic times, head to Rillé Lake (15 minutes’ drive) for walks, bike rides, paddleboarding, miniature golf and the chance to get up into the treetops at Baud’Rillé Adventure Park. To add a Loire Valley château to your schedule, try Château de Marcilly-sur-Maulne (10 minutes) or Château de Lorrière (20 minutes) – both designed in the classic French style and well preserved. Other days out might take you to the flower-filled paths of Le Jardin de Mireille (10 minutes) or to meet all sorts of animals from around the world at Zoo de la Flèche (half an hour).
