  • Swimming pool, paddling pool, restaurant and social meals on site
Are there really 1001 castles in the Dordogne area? You may not get to quite that number, but you’ll be well placed to visit as many of the region’s châteaux and other attractions as possible when you stay at Camping La Peyrugue. This chilled-out family-friendly site is just about a mile from the pretty village of Daglan, with views over the Céou Valley and up to Château du Peyruzel. You can pick up numerous hiking or mountain bike trails just around the site, or head a little further afield to see some of the area’s top sights – Domme, La Roque-Gageac and Beynac are all within a 20-minute drive, as are the Milandes and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle castles. Site owners Déborah and Gilles always offer a warm welcome to their guests, and are happy to offer their own personal advice on where to go and what to do with your holidays. That said, you may well choose to spend a fair chunk of time on site, taking advantage of the 12 acres of lovely grounds and the various leisure facilities. The open-air swimming pool and paddling pool are the central highlights for most folk, and there’s also a playground and bouncy castle for the kids and space for games of pétanque and beach volleyball. Meals and drinks are available at the restaurant and bar, and the site team also run themed meals like the sociable Thursday evening barbecue nights. Self-catering supplies can be picked up in Daglan, which also has places to eat out if you’d prefer.

Local attractions

The area just around the site is great for a walk or a bike ride, but those aren’t the only way to get around. If you’d like to try something different, how about hiring canoes to paddle along the Dordogne river (15 minutes’ drive) or getting above it all on a hot air balloon flight (10 minutes)? For gentle strolls, try the Jardins de Marqueyssac (15 minutes), or wander around some of the region’s pretty towns and villages – perhaps the fortified hilltop village of Domme (20 minutes), the troglodyte dwellings of La Roque-Gageac (15 minutes) or the medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda (25 minutes). And of course you can’t ignore all those châteaux – some of the best nearby are Château de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (10 minutes), Château des Milandes (15 minutes) and Château de Marzac (40 minutes). For a change of scenery, delve underground to the Grottes de Cougnac (25 minutes) or the prehistoric paintings of the Lascaux caves (45 minutes).
