  • Peaceful riverside site with water access for swims and fishing
  • A 25-minute drive to Périgueux; 35 minutes to Brantôme
  • Swimming pool, playground, snack bar and massages on site
Here’s a colourful little Dordogne spot for you… Camping d’Auberoche is in the Auvezère valley, at the crossroads of the Green, White and Black Périgord regions. This peaceful place is in a lovely riverside location that lends itself well to relaxing days – with the amenities of Bassillac et Auberoche about 10 minutes’ drive away and gastronomic capital Périgueux about 25 minutes away. There’s a real sense of nature and tradition around here (the latter coming from the 12th-century chapel just next to the site) but the facilities on site are completely contemporary, including a launderette and a bathroom block that’s got baby washroom and accessible facilities. Entertainment is available in abundance too – active types can hit the bowling alley, the table tennis and table football or the badminton area, or take a swim in either the outdoor pool or the fresh waters of the river. Meanwhile, those in search of a bit more serenity might like to settle by the river for some fishing, or book in for a massage by the water’s edge. There’s plenty to keep the kids busy too, including a play area with a bouncy castle and a trampoline. Meals can be cooked up at the shared barbecue area (with wood provided), or you might like to take the easy option of a takeaway from the snack bar. Guests can also book a delivery of bread and pastries each morning for breakfast. There’s good news for those with an eye on the environment too – owners Christèle and Christophe are keen to make their place as eco-friendly as possible, adding things like solar lighting, waste sorting, rainwater recovery tanks and compost toilets.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Nice site. Friendly welcome. We stayed 2 days before it closed for the season (30th Sept) and were the only ones there. Clean, new facilities, well the two toilets and shower that were unlocked for us were. On the river, shady pitches. We did suffer a lot of bites but this obviously depends on season and weather.

Disliked: Nothing, suited our needs perfectly.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Very nice leafy location by a river. Quiet, laid-back site, very friendly and helpful staff, on-site bar, snack bar in the evening. Impeccable, brand-new toilet block and reasonable pricing.

From the manager: Thank you very much for everything. We are happy that you had a great stay at our campsite. We have made renovations this year including the sanitary block and the swimming pool as new owners. And we will continue. We hope to see you again. All the best.

From the manager: Bonjour.

Quiet location. Stunning scenery.

Liked: Well laid out site with friendly staff in beautiful scenery.

Disliked: Campsite had a bar but no food. A snack bar was being prepared while I was there.

Local attractions

Périgueux (25 minutes’ drive) is the place to start, for strolls around the medieval town and the Roman town, a visit to the UNESCO-listed cathedral and a ride on the tourist train, followed by sampling some of its foodie specialities (particularly the lamb, the cheeses and the truffles). Other urban areas that should be on your list to visit include Brantôme (35 minutes), known as the ‘Little Venice of the Périgord’ and Sarlat-la-Canéda (55 minutes), a medieval city with around 60 listed Historic Monuments. History stretches even further back at the caves of Tourtoirac (20 minutes) and Lascaux (40 minutes) and in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil (45 minutes), a well-known prehistoric site with a semi-troglodyte village. The Dordogne area is also absolutely packed with castles, so you should certainly plan to see at least one – take your pick from the Renaissance-style Château de Hautefort (25 minutes), antique-filled Château de Bourdeilles (35 minutes), opera singer Josephine Baker’s former home Château des Milandes (an hour), the war museum at Château de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (an hour)…
