Could you see yourself spending a few days by Colombia’s Caribbean coast, basking on the beach, pottering around on bikes and checking out the native wildlife? Sì? Then follow in the footsteps of the cute monkey that lends the place its name and pitch up at Hostal Casa del Mono Cuco. (And if no… perhaps check pulse to make sure you are still alive?) This peaceful patch is in the Caribe area, a few minutes’ walk from San Antero’s beaches and three kilometres from the main town. The resort of Coveñas is a 20-minute drive away, and there's plenty to keep you busy in the surrounds – including mangrove trips, scuba diving and a volcanic mud bath. The order of the day around here is pretty simple: start with a leisurely breakfast on site (arepas, cheeses and tropical fruits are all available to order), then head out for a while (hiring a bike to get around if you’re keeping it local). Wander back for a siesta in the shade, then stroll down to the beach to find a beer, a plate of seafood and a spot to watch the sunset. If you’re going the self-catering route, you might also want to schedule in some time to stroll into town for supermarket supplies; back at base you’re welcome to light up a barbecue or use the site kitchen – the folk here pride themselves on keeping it squeaky clean for guests, as they do the showers and toilets.

Local attractions

All corners of the Caribbean Sea are famed for their fab beaches, and this part is no exception. You could spend many a day/week/the rest of your life on the beaches of San Antero, but it’s worth hauling yourself away to head up to Coveñas (20 minutes' drive). Up here is a vast 14-kilometre stretch of sand, flanked by a protected area of mangrove for a most scenic backdrop. Those mangroves are home to all sorts of wildlife, so it's worth signing up for a tour to see some of it. If you want guaranteed turtle and crocodile sightings, add in a trip to the nature reserve in San Antero (10 minutes) too. There’s plenty more wildlife beneath the waves, too – don scuba kit for dives and lessons in Coveñas to get down for a look. Swims in the sea are a must, of course, but it’s also worth planning a different kind of wallow – in the warm mud at Volcán de Lodo El Tesoro (15 minutes' drive), reputed to soften the skin. Don't worry about getting your kit all mucky, as the staff here can lend a hand to hose you off afterwards.
