  • Peaceful site five minutes' walk from Fairbourne on the Gwynedd coast
  • Half an hour's drive from Barmouth beach, bridge and estuary
  • Bala White Water Centre and Penygader trails within 45 minutes' drive
Dolphin pods, dragon's teeth and secret lakes where the river meets the sea… join the folk at Ynys Faig Farm, five minutes' amble from Fairbourne and half an hour's drive from the beach at Barmouth. The local railway station and village shops are a couple of minutes' walk away. Small sorts will probably excitedly ask about the dragon's teeth first: these are on the sands at Fairbourne and are tank traps laid out in World War II to thwart enemy invasion. You'll find a friendlier welcome these days, with two dog-walking areas and two pubs in the village both serving food. Kids will likely be chuffed at the thought of a vintage train ride too, so take them on the narrow-gauge railway from Fairbourne up to Penryhn Point, where the Mawddach estuary meets the Irish Sea. From there, catch the ferry from there over to Barmouth for walks with the chance to spot dolphins in the waters. This peaceful place on the Gwynedd coast is a small and friendly family-run site with a limited number of pitches to keep everything peaceful and spacious; it's regularly hailed by visitors for its friendly vibe and scenically hilly backdrop, as well as its modern amenities of toilets, hot showers and a washing-up area. The pitching part of the site is divided into hedged sections, for both privacy and protection during windy weather. There aren't many rules: dogs are welcome, barbecues are fine and you can hire firepits and buy wood for cooking outdoor feasts.

Local attractions

Barmouth (half an hour's drive) is more than the mouth of a river, of course: the beach is a hit with families and paddleboarders, and the harbour has boat trips to see the seal colonies and dolphin pods. If you're chasing bigger thrills on water, make a beeline for the National White Water Centre, 40 minutes away at Bala, for kayaking and rafting. A 50-minute drive away, Zip World Slate Caverns in Blaenau Ffestiniog gives you the white-knuckle experience at height, flying through former slate quarries. For a quieter experience, drive for under five minutes to the paths to Blue Lake, where the mineral-rich waters are a truly remarkable colour. (The rocks around the lake can be slippy so unless you're a medal-winning wild swimmer, maybe save your breaststroke for the beach.) If you want to spend more time on the coastline, head 20 minutes to Dolgellau for the Mawddach Trail, nine miles of nature-filled peace along a former railway line, landing handily back in Barmouth for a paddle and an ice cream (or a chicken tikka at the town's tandoori). For heights, wilderness and true solitude, paths up Penygader mountain start 45 minutes' drive away.
