Pitches and view of the castle and restaurant

  • Spectacularly scenic lakeside park, set around a 16th-century castle
  • A 10-minute drive from Newton Stewart and the Galloway Forest Park
  • Pools, inn, crazy golf, games room, playground and donkey corner
Care for a hol among spectacular Scottish scenery… on a fably kitted out park with access to its own loch for fishing – and with its own swish inn and restaurant to keep you fully fuelled? Come and call upon family-run Castle Cary Holiday Park in Dumfries and Galloway. Set a handy seven miles from Newton Stewart, Castle Cary is in splendid surrounds with royally fine views over the local woodland, fields and the estuary of the River Cree. It's centred around a 16th-century baronial castle, part of which has been restored as the Laird's Inn, a warm and cosy space of wooden beams, stone walls and open fires (it's best to book a table in advance here as it's rather popular). The inn's the place to retreat to after a day getting active around the site and in the local countryside: you can fish here or in river, sea or loch nearby; there's sailing, boating, horse riding and wild swimming all nearby, and Galloway Forest Park is 10 minutes' drive north. Castle Cary has excellent amenities to go with its smartly kept pitches, including a chalet building with showers, toilets, a disabled-access toilet, a baby changing room, a laundry room and sinks; guests also have access to a dishwashing area. The site also has a family-run café that serves breakfasts, meals, snacks, coffee and sweet treats. Facilities are rather fine too, with two big heated pools (one indoor and one outdoor; charges apply for both), a heated paddling pool, a playground, crazy golf, a games room with pool tables and video games, and – pretty much guaranteed to make the kids go gaga – a donkey corner to greet the site's four-legged residents.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Spacious pitches and didn't feel too cramped although there were a lot of van/motorhomes. Fairly level, we didn't use levellers although I noticed some vans had. Location ideal for exploring Dumfries and Galloway. We didn't use the swimming pool/café etc so can't comment on those. The playpark was very popular with children, looked a good site for families. 11 pm quiet rule adhered to when we were there. Site was clean.
Laird's Inn was very busy on the Saturday night, 5 stars to the staff who worked there and kept everything running smoothly. Food good, as was the beer. You do need to book online as it was fully booked when we were there. (Simple process!)
Rules on website said no gazebos/awnings/pup tents but there were quite a few in use.
Would possibly use again as a one night stop . We do prefer smaller sites, but size hasn't put us off (see dislikes).

Disliked Oh dear, the toilets/showers! The "ensuite" idea does not seem to be working, more like a very wet/dirty room. Showers weren't fully enclosed and cloakroom sized hand wash basins meant water leaked onto the floor, out of the cubicle and into the corridor where it mixed with footprints from people's shoes. There was a notice to asking people to mop up the floor after using. We did, BEFORE use, to try to get into a cubicle without getting too wet/dirty! No sign that over a busy weekend these were ever cleaned. Foot prints (dog prints?) left in the actual showers. We gave up trying to find a clean one and thankfully we were only there a couple of nights so gave the showers a miss.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Friendly staff in Reception and in the cafe. Nice site with a fair bit of privacy due to the hedges. Dog friendly apart from the slate chipping on individual pitches. Very pretty site with the castle ruins and the Laird’s Inn and spectacular sunsets over the Solway Firth. Grandkids loved the 2 pools and playground.

Disliked The lack of cleanliness of the showers, toilet and in particular the disabled facilities. The disabled toilet was not cleaned the whole time we were there. The same rubbish in and on the sink, same tissue in the shower plug, same rubbish on the floor, no hand drying facilities in there neither paper towels nor air dryer. The bolt on the door needs changing as I got stuck in there twice as the bolt is too stiff to open . Normal showers and toilets were very dirty and also the showers were slippy, despite the layers of sand in them.

Liked Position. Excellent for exploring.

Disliked Almost everything else. Butlins comes to mind. My pitch was near the toilet block so people simply walked all over the pitch. Toilets in the morning were filthy. I booked for two nights but only stayed one. Presence of police were a definite deterrent. Will not book again.

Liked The whole are was great, lairds inn was good for food

Disliked Pitches cramped in together, unisex toilets quite a let down. My young daughter couldn't go pee on her own. Long queues to the shower on the morning and big mess within

FHU cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked The relaxed, family atmosphere of the site. Friendly staff. The proximity to the long distance cycle path. Good serviced pitches.

Disliked The unisex en-suite toilets, although modern, are impossible to keep clean, with shower spray and dust on shoes keeping the floors constantly dirty - it was a busy bank holiday weekend though!

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Thank you to this site. We had been in an unfortunate accident with our camper and needed to change our booking to a tent set up. No problems, changed with no hesitation. (Other sites on our trip had refused to help) Nice size camp, plenty of room to set up without being on top of your neighbours. Lovely walks available just on site with wooded paths, fields and wild life out there to see. We saw deers, foxes and plenty of rabbits (watership down comes to mind,) castle/pub resturant set a lovely scene too. Indoor/outdoor pool was used daily. Ensuite toilets were great.
Plenty of little hidden treasures to explore off site and within 10-20 minutes drive. Lovely beaches a drive away. Holy cairns, ruins all in driving distance.

Disliked Disappointed that the site offers fishing on their pond/lake but it's not set for fishing and would of damaged our gear. Full of reeds, lily pads and needs attention if anyone wants to fish. Reason we booked here was because of fishing facilities.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Plenty of space for pitching a tent (of all sizes). I liked the fact you can park your vehicle next to your pitch. Food was excellent in Lairds Inn (make sure you book in advance). Although there is no ale on tap they do have it in bottles which is supplied from a local brewery, I thought it was very nice.
Loved seeing all the rabbits on site along with the two lovely swans that currently have seven (nearly fully grown) cygnets.

Disliked The main road can be very noisy especially if you are pitching a tent. There's a small cluster of trees in the centre of the field which may block out some of the noise.
