  • Rural Co.Londonderry site less than three miles from Derry city centre
  • A 10-minute drive to the Donegal border; 50 minutes to Portrush
  • Well-stocked fishing lake and fishing/tackle shop on site
A rural break centred around fishing… but you barely have to leave the city to find it? That’s the deal at The Oaks Fishery, in a peaceful spot just under three miles from the centre of Derry/Londonderry. It’s a fabulous spot for those who’d to mix up a bit of fishing and a bit of city sightseeing/nightlife – or for couples, groups and families who have slightly different views on the best way to fill their days off. There’s a lot going on here for the anglers among you – the lake is stocked with hard-fighting Danish blue rainbow trout ranging from 3lb to 10lb alongside roach, perch and rudd. There may be big prizes on offer too – unofficially, this place saw the UK and Ireland’s heaviest pike for 10 years with a 46.5lb catch by a local angler… A fishing and tackle shop is on site to help you along with your endeavours, and the team of professional guides and gillies are available for other fishing adventures nearby – have a word with them if you’d like to organise salmon fishing or sea angling days. Time spent away from your fishing rod can take you into the city centre with a drive of around 10 minutes, to learn about its history or hang out at some of the music venues, bars and restaurants. While you're there you might also like to pick up some food supplies for a meal back on the site – there's a barbecue provided, and an eating area with picnic tables where you can serve up your alfresco meals. Other facilities on site include wifi, showers and separate ladies’ and gents’ toilets.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Owners were sound and helpful especially with the fishing. The location of our campsite was lovely and well sheltered from the wind and rain so we barely noticed it on the trip. All around the lake was stunning.

Disliked: One particularly scary spider in the bathroom. Don’t trust him!

Log cabin

Liked: Beautiful views from the Cabin, very kind and welcoming.

Disliked: It felt too isolated and basic for us and more geared towards and overnight stay for fishermen rather than a family holiday.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: A fabulous find which I have no hesitation in recommending. The owners were helpful and friendly, and when it rained went out of their way to help it not stop the enjoyment of our camping trip. The facilities were basic but clean and there was plenty of hot water in the shower, and the views over the lake where the trout were jumping were magical - what more do you need.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The photos on Pitchup don't really do justice to just how beautiful a location this is as a tent pitching site. Absolute tranquility overlooking a lake with fish leaping and a family of swans. Ian the guy who manages the place was really helpful and the facilities, while pretty basic are more than adequate and are clean. The site is mostly aimed at those wanting to fish in the Lake, but we went just to enjoy the peace and quiet and the view. There is no walking trail at the site, but it made a great base for us to easily access by car, places like Malin Head, Glenevin Waterfall and various woodland areas. It is a very small site with 3 basic wooden cabins and space for maybe 4 or so tents, so it feels very private. Would highly recommend.

Local attractions

Even if you're really into your fishing, you should try to make it off site at least once – the city of Derry/Londonderry has a fascinating past that's best explored on one of the popular walled city walking tours. The Museum of Free Derry and Tower Museum are worth a visit too, and it's good to have a stroll around looking out for the city’s famous street art and the Peace Bridge. Heading further out for a change of scenery, you might like to get out for walks in the Sperrin Area of Natural Beauty (25 minutes’ drive) or head along the coast to places like Castlerock beach (35 minutes) or Portrush (50 minutes). If you’ve never been, it's worth making the hour-long drive to the Giants Causeway as well. Crossing over into County Donegal, you can meet some of Ireland’s ‘lost wildlife’ (including wild boar, bears and lynx) at Wild Ireland (10 minutes) or carry on to see the dramatic landscapes of Glenevin Waterfall (40 minutes) and Malin Head (50 minutes).
