  • Small and friendly site at the top of the Mendip Hills
  • Within walking distance of several pubs; Cheddar 10 minutes' drive
  • Surrounded by woodland: look out for deer, badgers, foxes and buzzards
Small, simple, in a wildlife haven, welcoming families and well-behaved dogs, surrounded by all sorts of activities, and on the Mendip Pub Trail – how many hurrahs could you give The Batch Campsite? (Quite a few more, it turns out – it's only three miles from splendid Cheddar.) The Batch is rightly popular with quiet holidayers, who come for its scenic location (especially fine at sunset), its closeness to Cheddar and the things to do nearby such as hiking, mountain biking, climbing and caving… It's surrounded by woodland, so watch out for deer, badgers and buzzards too. The site is on the end of a bumpy unadopted private road at the top of the Mendips and has been deliberately set up in simple style. That being said, there are some helpful facilities, including a wash house with flushing toilets, hot showers, sinks, plus a fridge-freezer and a washing-up area with a drinking water supply. Campfires are allowed – naturally – and Tim and team can help you fire one up for cooking if you need a hand. The team can also provide a range of local produce to cook up your own meals including trout, sausages, bacon, eggs, ribs, cheese and cider (all from within a three-mile radius): let them know when you arrive or drop them a note in the Special requests box after booking. And yet more hurrahs: The Batch is within easy walking distance of several Somerset pubs, all pulling gallons of local beers and ciders alongside some dishing up some right good pub food. Most of the neighbouring farms make their own cider, but you can also walk down to the Thatchers cider farm.

What customers say

A tranquil, no-frills spot with amazing views & a welcoming host. Clean facilities, fire pits, and close to pubs/trails. Access road can be rough, parking isn't on-site. "Almost wild" camping isn't for all. Management is working on kitchen upkeep.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked What a fabulous campsite!
Tim was so helpful and obviously takes great pride in his site, without imposing. Perfect balance.
Facilties (loos, shower and kitchen) were clean and didn't have to queue, even when site was fully booked.
I'd recommend ordering a breakfast : all local produce and delicious.
Local pubs within easy walking distance (The Crown was amazing) and evening meal at Star was good.
So many great walks from the Batch.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The tucked away setting

Disliked The pitch area was un-mowed and the kitchen was dirty

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We are so sorry you didn't enjoy your stay. i know you only booked last minute for one night but we do like to make every stay enjoyable. You did book what is heavily advertised as an "Almost Wild Camping" pitch The pitches are not mowed at this time of year(I suspect you're not familiar with "no mow May") to encourage a diversity of plant and insect life. On the other hand the kitchen sink area I think you are referring to was checked shortly before you arrived in the evening. Given you left early in the morning it was checked and cleaned shortly after you left. As you know we encourage campers to keep this area clean , but we will endeavour to ensure the area is checked late evening as well. If you would like a refund do not hesitate to contact us asap or we can offer you free camping on a return visit. Thank you for your honest and frank review.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The campsite is in a stunning location looking over a valley, and with a limited number of pitches, makes it a very peaceful stay. Tim was the most amazing host, and was always ready to help out if needed. The facilities were great- with lovely clean toilet and shower blocks and a great washing up area. the campsite has great facilities but also is in a great location to go and explore the area- with some excellent pubs close by. Just loved it.

Bell tent

Liked We arrived a bit early but was welcomed warmly non the less. The host was very kind and helpful. Great views and walks. We got cold in the tent just our mistake for underestimating that nights can get cold. We were able to light a camp fire which was a treat to show our little 4yr old how to build and light a fire. The host showed him the chickens and had fresh egg for breakfast which we cooked on gas stove supplied and quality local produce, the tomatoes we had were amazing! Our only regret was not being able to stay a little longer. Thank you for our stay on your beautiful land.

Local attractions

The small farm of The Batch Campsite is between a National Trust woodland and a Bronze Age settlement: you might already have heard that this part of Somerset is fairly historic… Cheese, gorge, caves and climbing are three miles away over the hill at Cheddar and Tim and co can provide instruction if you want to tackle any Cheddar or Mendip caving or climbing. It's full-on walking and hiking land here too, around the gorge and hills, the area's cider farms or the Mendip Way's 50 miles over the Mendip Hills from Weston-super-Mare to Frome. The Mendip Pub or Butcombe Trail is an agreeably scenic totter along 45 miles connecting six pubs owned by Butcombe Brewery and through Priddy, Axbridge, Bleadon, Rowberrow and Compton Martin. Yet more attraction and activity hurrahs are in the area, like seaside days at Weston-super-Mare, heritage at Wells Cathedral, Glastonbury Tor and medieval Axbridge, or a whizz down the slopes at the Avon Ski Centre.
