The Batch Campsite: Our first use of a firepit

General

  • Small and friendly site at the top of the Mendips
  • Three miles from Cheddar and within walking distance of several pubs
  • Surrounded by woodland: look out for deer, badgers, foxes and buzzards

Small, simple, in a wildlife haven, welcoming families and well-behaved dogs, surrounded by all sorts of activities for all sizes, and on the Mendip Pub Trail – how many hurrahs could you give The Batch Campsite? (Quite a few more, it turns out – it's only three miles from splendid Cheddar.)

The Batch is rightly popular with wild camping and quiet holiday types, who come for its scenic location (watch out for the sunsets), its closeness to Cheddar and the piles of things to do nearby such as hiking, cycling, mountain biking, climbing and caving… It's surrounded by woodland, so also watch out for deer, badgers, foxes and buzzards all around.

The site is on the end of a bumpy unadopted private road at the top of the Mendips and has been deliberately set up in simple style so that guests can experience a wild camping vibe in a safe space.

Campfires are allowed – naturally – and Tim and team can help you fire one up for cooking if you need a bit of a hand. The team can also provide a range of local produce to cook up your own barbecue including trout, burgers, sausages, bacon, eggs, ribs, cheese and cider (all from within a three-mile radius): let them know when you arrive or drop them a note in the Special requests box after booking.

And yet more hurrahs: The Batch is within easy walking distance of several Somerset pubs, all pulling gallons of local beers and ciders alongside some dishing up some right good pub food. Most of the neighbouring farms make their own cider, but you can also walk down to the Thatchers cider farm.

The Batch facilities include a toilet block, fridge-freezer and a washing-up area; please note that showers aren't currently available for wild camping guests.

Please note

This park has no on-site shower facilities.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Minimum spacing of 5 metres between pitches.

Such a lovely stay! Only came for one night but definitely hope to return soon. Beautiful camping spot, lovely wildlife, deer, woodpeckers and lots of different small birds. Secluded pitching amongst blackberries and wooded area with many surrounding spots to visit. Very welcoming and homey feel, chickens and hammocks were a highlight. Tim was great to talk to, very helpful. Definitely would recommend!

We stayed here for just 1 night but we quite enjoyed it. The owner welcomed us and showed us around the amenities, very basic, but that's what we wanted. The campsite was full, which had, about 7 tents in total, so quite a small site. There was a built in firepit next to our tent and we used that very happily.
The only thing was getting to and fro the main road. As stated in the ad, you have to go up a dirt road and, of course being near Cheddar, is full of big rocks sticking out. My fiat 500 large made it but it was unnerving to say the least. The next day we turned right out of the campsite instead of left (which is where I should have turned), as when we walked it the night prior looked flatter... Wrong! The guy in the tractor told us that we might get stuck and we did! We had to remove huge rocks from underneath the car to unstuck it from there but then no problem. Might I also add, that other campers had normal size cars too, but maybe they didn't mind driving up a road like that, I did.So, only for this reason I wouldn't return, otherwise thumbs up for everything else.

The owner Tim was fantastic! Very friendly and helpful. Gorgeous setting, fire pit (you can collect your own wood form the forest of they will sell you some) and sunset. Very rustic with no showers which was fine for a couple of days stay. Lovely pubs close by very friendly locals. Cheddar gorge wasn’t far and very spectacular. Would go back again for sure.

Everything! The yurt was amazing and we had everything we needed for a glamping stay. The beds were very comfortable and we all slept well, the kids loved playing in the meadow especially on the tyre swing and the views were stunning. We appreciated having a private toilet and hot shower right next to the yurt. Tim was great and very helpful. The welcome gifts went down very well too. The location is excellent and with shops and pubs within walking distance. A very relaxing stay.

Pitches all good and level with well spaced firepits, effectively having one to your exclusive use allowing you to have full scope on the extent and composition of your own fire.
Recommend taking good heavy duty stakes for hard/semi rocky ground as the mendips is well known for rocks under the grass on campsites. Fortunately i came prepared.
Good that cars are kept away from the tent pitches, and wheelbarrows are available for your use if you don't have it all packed in one pack.
A good emphasis on recycling on this site
Logs available and firelighting capabilties for those who don't want to practice their firelighting skills.
Lots of opportunities to gather wood.
Very friendly and personable owner, who keeps you updated on anything you need to know during your stay.
Plenty to do in the local area without needing to be right in the centre of the action.
Seems like the other guests are also of the same mindset, so you end up with some friendly people with an area good for kids.

    Disliked:

    Parking is limited, though adequate.
Access road to the site, is stimulating for a good 4WD, though you'll be advised to approach the site from one of two directions if you have a regular car. Don't bother if you have a very low vehicle.
Wash & toilet facilities are limited though no shortage of them. This is well described in advance and expected though they are compensated by them having plenty of character.

Directions

From Bristol and Bristol airport take the A38 heading south up to a crossroads with A368 in Churchill (Murphy's chip shop). Turn right on to the A368 and drive for approximately 400m. Take the left at Nelson's Arms pub onto Skinners Lane. Drive for 400m and then take the right hand fork by the Crown pub onto The Batch. Continue up this steep unmade road until you come to the top of the hill. Wood View and The Batch Campsite is on the right.

From M5, take the junction for Weston Super Mare and turn onto the A370 towards Congresbury and Bristol. After 4 miles, in Congresbury, turn right onto the B3133 signposted Langford. Follow this road until you come to a junction with the A38 in Langford. Turn right onto the A38 and continue as indicated above.

Local attractions

The small farm of The Batch Campsite is between a National Trust woodland and a Bronze Age settlement: you might already have heard that this part of Somerset is fairly historic… Cheese, gorge, caves and climbing are three miles away over the hill at Cheddar and Tim and co can provide instruction if you want to tackle any Cheddar or Mendip caving or climbing.

It's full-on walking and hiking land here too, around the gorge and hills, the area's cider farms or the Mendip Way's 50 miles over the Mendip Hills from Weston-super-Mare to Frome. The Mendip Pub or Butcombe Trail is an agreeably scenic totter along 45 miles connecting six pubs owned by Butcombe Brewery and through Priddy, Axbridge, Bleadon, Rowberrow, and Compton Martin.

Yet more attraction and activity hurrahs are in the area, like seaside days at Weston-super-Mare, heritage at Wells Cathedral, Glastonbury Tor and medieval Axbridge, or a shoot down the slopes at the Avon Ski Centre.
