Around the site

  • Wild camping site on an outdoor activity centre five miles from Poole
  • A 10-minute drive from Poole and half an hour from the Jurassic Coast
  • Activities on site including archery, mountain biking and axe throwing
From pottering about Poole and scoping out the Jurassic Coast to crossbow shooting, big tree climbing and mountain biking on site, you’ll want to get everyone on deck for a break at Adventure Pirate, five miles from Poole. This Dorset site is wild camping galore and you’ll really be able to muck in, as it’s attached to an activity centre that runs a bucket load of outdoor activities. You’ll need to roll up with all your equipment here (tents or bivvies and nibbles and drinks included), as there are no facilities other than a couple of composting toilets, a single basic shower, a drinking water tap, a washing-up station and some rubbish bins. Once you’ve left your car in the car park and hauled your kit to your chosen pitch in one of the site’s trolleys, you’ll be going fully wild, with ground fires permitted to keep you feeling toasty. There are five acres of safe woodlands on site, so the kids are free to go off and build dens, get muddy or play their go-to games. On top of that, you may very well leave with a new skill under your belt, as the site runs activities including axe throwing, archery, crossbow or air rifle shooting, big tree climbing, survival, foam gun battles and mountain biking. All activities are subject to availability and a fee, and in busier periods, additional sign-up sheets may be displayed (by the way, guests get a 25% discount). For a drink to wash all those activities down or a meal to get your energy levels back on track, Lytchett Minster has a couple of pubs 15 minutes’ walk away or Poole’s got its own delectable dining scene, 10 minutes’ drive away.

What customers say

This woodland campsite offers a relaxed, "wild camping" feel with spacious, private pitches and campfire facilities. Visitors praise the friendly staff, plentiful activities for children, and clean, well-maintained basic amenities. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few guests noted issues with uneven pitches, occasional noise from other campers, and expensive activities.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked This was our first time camping as a family and it was an amazing experience. We loved the wild camping vibe, it really added to the adventure. There’s a wide variety of large, well-spaced pitches to choose from, each with its own campfire. The site never felt overcrowded like some others, which made it even more enjoyable.

It’s very family friendly, with plenty of activities and fun for the kids. The compost toilets were clean and regularly maintained, and the showers were excellent, hot, powerful, and with plenty of space to get dressed inside.

The staff were fantastic: James and Becky were so welcoming, helpful, and approachable. We also loved our daily visits from the “big boss” Daisy, though she was always busy making her rounds!

The washing up facilities were great too, with hot water always available. Overall, we had a brilliant stay and will definitely be returning.

Bramble Nook bell tent

Liked We had a wonderful stay at Adventure Pirate. The whole campsite was great with so much to do for the kids. They loved the freedom of being able to safely play in the woods.
Becky who was onsite most of the time and in the little snack shack was absolutely amazing. Great with the kids and really friendly and helpful.
The showers and toilets were always clean and the facilities for getting water, washing up etc were great.
We stayed in the Bell tent which was fantastic. Had everything we needed provided in there and the beds were super comfy. The spot we had was lovely with it's own firepit, BBQ, outside seating area and beautiful views.
There is also loads to do outside the camp that are close by so you have so many options for days/trips or activities out.
I would highly recommend visiting here. Our kids were asking when we were coming back as we were packing up the car to leave. We will definitely be back.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked Lots of pitch sites to chose from and all good size. We enjoyed exploring the woods around the camp site. The area for kids to play in is amazing with something for everyone to enjoy, having travelled with 3 kids- 16, 6 and 1 they were never bored. The toilets and area to wash up were always clean. Kids enjoyed helping to build a fire and toasting Marshmallows.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked Everything! This place is great, wonder around the forest, play in the play park, sit round your fire. We had a great time

Disliked The trolley broke, all our things fell off lol. Although this was funny it was also quite annoying at the same time.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked Nice pitches in the woods. Friendly manager. Nice place for kids with many things to do. Wel build and clean compost toilets and hot showers. Close to Jurassic Coast.

Disliked Campfires are allowed, but without any policy. Not everyone knows how to make a good fire (with dry wood and actual flames) and that makes the entire campsite one big smokehouse in the evenings. This is horrible when you are trying to sleep. Nowhere fire extinguishers.

Bramble Nook bell tent

Liked Safe forest area for the children to play, trampolines, swings, climbing, den building, freedom for the children. Additional activities if you want them (we did weapon craft and the kids really enjoyed it). Technology is not king in this forest, back to basics and the simple life reigns supreme. Provided your child has an imagination they will be happy as Larry! The staff were fabulous, especially Becky who is a forest school master and had a special gift with the children. Well deserved 10/10 from us. Plus bell tent was amazing! Thank You! We will be back

Disliked Actually, nothing! I wouldn’t change it!

Local attractions

Activities aren't limited to the site – and that’s for certain at Farmer Palmer's Farm Park (five minutes’ drive). As well as bringing together a farm fantasy with interactive animal activities, this site has indoor and outdoor play areas and woodland trails and a maze (perhaps one of the only places you’ll want to get lost on purpose). Local beaches could certainly count as a playground of their own too, as beach sports and watersports are available for a chock-a-block day in Bournemouth (25 minutes), a nice contrast to the more austere Victorian parks and gardens, museums and galleries in the town. Then, of course, there’s Poole (10 minutes), with the riveting water rides at Splashdown and the harbour for windsurfing, kayaking and the works. You’ll surely want to take a bite out of the Jurassic Coast too, given that it’s only half an hour’s drive away. Whether it’s a scramble over Dancing Ledge (half an hour), a climb to see Old Harry Rocks (half an hour) or a duck into the old quarry caves at Winspit Quarry (35 minutes), this scenic part of the coast is crammed with beauty spots.
