  • Wild camping site on an outdoor activity centre five miles from Poole
  • A 10-minute drive from Poole and half an hour from the Jurassic Coast
  • Activities on site including archery, mountain biking and axe throwing
From pottering about Poole and scoping out the Jurassic Coast to crossbow shooting, big tree climbing and mountain biking on site, you’ll want to get everyone on deck for a break at Adventure Pirate, five miles from Poole. This Dorset site is wild camping galore and you’ll really be able to muck in, as it’s attached to an activity centre that runs a bucket load of outdoor activities. You’ll need to roll up with all your equipment here (tents or bivvies and nibbles and drinks included), as there are no facilities other than a couple of composting toilets, a single basic shower, a drinking water tap, a washing-up station and some rubbish bins. Once you’ve left your car in the car park and hauled your kit to your chosen pitch in one of the site’s trolleys, you’ll be going fully wild, with ground fires permitted to keep you feeling toasty. There are five acres of safe woodlands on site, so the kids are free to go off and build dens, get muddy or play their go-to games. On top of that, you may very well leave with a new skill under your belt, as the site runs activities including axe throwing, archery, crossbow or air rifle shooting, big tree climbing, survival, foam gun battles and mountain biking. All activities are subject to availability and a fee, and in busier periods, additional sign-up sheets may be displayed (by the way, guests get a 25% discount). For a drink to wash all those activities down or a meal to get your energy levels back on track, Lytchett Minster has a couple of pubs 15 minutes’ walk away or Poole’s got its own delectable dining scene, 10 minutes’ drive away.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked The site was very nice with toilets and showers, and with a bar/shop available.

Disliked There was a big group if people, shouting and partying all night until 2am. I don’t know whom I could report this too, I couldn’t find any number on the website/email. In the morning both toilets were clogged with vomit..

From the manager: Thanks for your feedback – we’re really glad to hear you liked the site and enjoyed the facilities, including the bar, shop, toilets and showers.

However, we’re a little confused by a couple of the negative points raised. We send a text to every guest from the on-call campsite manager’s number, making it clear that if there are any issues during their stay, they can call or text directly for assistance. That same number is also available on our website and clearly displayed on the front of the Shack – which we know you visited, as you kindly mentioned it in your review.

Regarding the comment about vomit in the toilets – I (the on-call manager) was personally responsible for cleaning and checking the toilets throughout the weekend, and at no point did I find any vomit in either toilet. Had we been made aware of any issue at the time, we would’ve responded straight away to resolve it.

We absolutely want all guests to have a peaceful and enjoyable stay, and we take reports of noise seriously – but we do rely on guests contacting us at the time so we can act.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked This was my first ever camping trip with my son(12) and dog- booked this place based on the good reviews and here comes another 10/10- would have given it more if I could! I never liked the idea of camping in camper vans with electric hookups in the middle of a grass field, pitch next to pitch. If you love nature and virgin camping, if it’s as a couple, group or family or- like myself-single parent witch child- this is your destination! Safe and clean, nice spots to pitch up between trees and bushes, with fire pits and I mean REAL fire pits, where you can spend an entire evening eating marshmallows. Children love exploring the place with torches and the playground with trampolines and the dens. Next time we will take walkie talkies and some water guns. Eco toilets are far better and cleaner than the ones I remember from my childhood camping, showers, washing up stations with hot water and drinking water on site. Everything close and even an Aldi 4 min drive away, not to mention beautiful beaches. I loved every minute there and will come back with some of my friends with kids and recommend to everyone who would like to teach their kids that all the luxuries we have in our life are not essential to have fun. My 12 yr old loved to prep and maintain the fire, to use torches to walk to the toilet and in the tent, he enjoyed how we could spend some time together without phones, tv and even music and even made friends with our neighbours who also were very supportive. All guests on site were friendly and we greeted each other and smiled each time we have done dishes or walked the dog. We had a lovely 2 night stay and can’t wait to come back. James- you are a star and the hard work and ideas you have will make a lot of people happy, you are in the right place and living your dream, thank you for making mine come true- 1’st time camping and I have found the best place ever!

From the manager: This feedback makes us really happy to read. Thank you so so much. This really means a lot. Looking forward to welcoming you back again later this year. James. X

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked Loved this place. Each pitch is like your own piece of woodland. Activities during the day and peaceful at night. No mod cons just pure camping. Toilets and shower kept clean and more than adequate for this type of camping. Staff were helpful and friendly. Loved we could have a fire in the ready made pits. Perfect (semi) wildcamp.

Disliked Honestly I can't fault this place.

Local attractions

Activities aren't limited to the site – and that’s for certain at Farmer Palmer's Farm Park (five minutes’ drive). As well as bringing together a farm fantasy with interactive animal activities, this site has indoor and outdoor play areas and woodland trails and a maze (perhaps one of the only places you’ll want to get lost on purpose). Local beaches could certainly count as a playground of their own too, as beach sports and watersports are available for a chock-a-block day in Bournemouth (25 minutes), a nice contrast to the more austere Victorian parks and gardens, museums and galleries in the town. Then, of course, there’s Poole (10 minutes), with the riveting water rides at Splashdown and the harbour for windsurfing, kayaking and the works. You’ll surely want to take a bite out of the Jurassic Coast too, given that it’s only half an hour’s drive away. Whether it’s a scramble over Dancing Ledge (half an hour), a climb to see Old Harry Rocks (half an hour) or a duck into the old quarry caves at Winspit Quarry (35 minutes), this scenic part of the coast is crammed with beauty spots.
