  • Quiet rural site on a working farm 10 minutes' drive from Honiton
  • A 15-minute drive from Seaton, Sidmouth and the South West Coast Path
  • Farm shop and tea room on site for homemade meals and takeaway food
Foodies who fancy a farm break, step this way… Bovey's Down Farm is a place where it’s possible to eat very well indeed. This rural site on a working beef farm in the East Devon National Landscape, 10 minutes’ drive from Honiton. And with that setting comes some splendid feasting material: pick up home-cooked cakes, pies, traditional pasties and homemade burgers from the farmhouse kitchen to eat at the picnic area, or settle in for drinks, lunches, cream teas and evening meals in the tea room or beer garden. You can also acquire bread, ribeye steaks and gluten-free sausages from the site for an evening barbecue or campfire brekkie. Once suitably fed and watered, there’s plenty to do nearby: you can get down to the Devon coast (and the resorts of Sidmouth and Seaton) in about 15 minutes’ drive, get out and about for walks/bike rides on the many country lanes and bridleways in the area or play a round of golf a couple of miles away. Getting a taste of farm life is pretty straightforward too: guests can join owner Gerald for a walking tour to meet the Aberdeen Angus cattle, ducks and hens and pick up tips on the wildlife that can be spotted around the place (lots of birdlife and the occasional fox or badger…) Facilities on site include toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a wifi connection to help you plan all those days out.

While some pitches are sloped and it can get muddy, improvements are underway. Despite minor road noise and camper disruptions, it's highly recommended for its value and friendly atmosphere.

Powered grass campsite

Liked Good site ,all the facilities were very clean and tidy, WiFi was ok for basic scrolling but needed to switch to mobile data now and again to watch stuff. The ladies in the restaurant were fantastic and very helpful. Some pitches lower down the field are on a slight incline, luckily we were near the top and it was flat. Great views over the valley

Disliked Nothing, would stay again .

Janet's parking powered cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked We love this site. Clean and well maintained. Lovely views. Friendly hosts. Only thing that would make it the last star would be level pitches. Appreciate this is hard on a hill though. Love the cafe /bar onsite.

Disliked Hilly walk back from loos. Slightly sloped pitches.

Powered grass campsite

Liked Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were pitched next to our friends as per our request and had plenty of room. Toilets and showers were basic - it’s not a concrete block like commercialised sites but they’re always exceptionally clean and the showers are hot which is all that matters.

Our friends ordered a fire pit which we enjoyed using and on a chilly evening it was perfect to allow us to stay outside.

We can thoroughly recommend the Sunday roasts in ‘The Swallows Rest’ onsite. Portion sizes were excellent and the food was hot, tasty and of excellent quality. Proper home cooked food.

Disliked It wasn’t a dislike, however, if you’re someone who’s particular about wanting to use the WiFi and you booked specifically with this in mind, it’s worth noting the WiFi doesn’t quite reach with enough signal in some spots which are on the perimeter. This wasn’t an issue for us at all but I can imagine some may be disgruntled if they’d booked it purposely.

Top view powered grass and gravel campsite

Liked Friendly, welcoming hosts; breakfast, lunch and dinner available on site; farm tours happily provided; plenty of water and electricity points; great location for exploring, with pubs and plenty of nature-based activities in the vicinity. The toilet and shower rooms all had sensor-lights which meant they came on when necessary but turned off to save electricity; and most of them also had automatic extraction fans, which is a great idea to deal with smells and damp! Freezer, microwave and clothes-washer on site.

Disliked Grass was rather long and tussocky, which would have been annoying if we were camping in a tent (lumpy), and meant that when it was wet, wellies were definitely required - but it *is* a farm, and we stayed early in the season so it may be that when the campsite is busier they cut the grass.

Local attractions

Once you’ve met the animals on site, get set to say hi to some more furry pals at The Donkey Sanctuary (10 minutes’ drive) before greeting some rather more exotic beasts at Axe Valley Wildlife Park (20 minutes) and Yarak Birds of Prey (half an hour). Trading countryside for coast is a fine idea for a day or two as well – it’ll take you around 15 minutes to drive down to Seaton or Sidmouth for beach days, paddles and strolls on the South West Coast Path. Lovely Lyme Regis (25 minutes) is another fab option – sign up for fishing trips here and you might be lucky enough to take home a fistful of mackerel for tea. Got a bit more time to fill? How about a day of horse riding (five minutes), floral wanders at Burrow Farm Gardens (20 minutes) and Bicton Park Botanical Gardens (25 minutes) or a whole heap of outdoor rides, indoor soft play areas and shows at Crealy Theme Park (half an hour)? Lyme Bay Winery is 20 minutes away too, should you need a tipple to go with your evening barbecue…
