  • Dog-friendly site five minutes’ walk from a surfing beach in Hayle
  • St Ives 20 minutes’s drive; Minack Theatre 35 minutes
  • On-site surf school and equipment hire, plus yoga sessions and café
Sea, surf and spectacular views – the deal at Sandy Acres Campsite sounds pretty good already, right? But there’s another element that might make it extra sweet, and that’s its dog-friendly nature. Four-legged guests (on a lead) are welcome – and not just on site, but also at the nearby beach, a vast expanse of golden sand also named Sandy Acres (five minutes’ walk, just beyond the Hayle Sand Dunes). As well as its splendid and convenient location, this pleasant site has a relaxed, low-key vibe. That doesn’t mean, however, that there are no perks here. True, there is no electric hook-up (though the owners will be happy to charge your mobile phone in the office), but there are several toilets, hot-water showers and a washing-up area (no hot water there, though). And while there's no fridge to store your grillable items, there is a freezer for your ice packs, plus a small café serving drinks and smoothies. For anything else, the nearest shop is just under a mile away, or you can head into Hayle town (10 minutes’ drive) for supermarkets, restaurants and pubs. With the practical aspects of your holiday taken care of, all you need to do is relax and take advantage of the site’s facilities, which include a surf school (catering to all levels) and equipment hire (from bodyboards and surfboards to wetsuits), plus yoga sessions, which take place on the beach (or in a wooden hut if the weather takes a turn).

What customers say

This campsite gets rave reviews for its stunning beach access & peaceful vibe. Guests loved the well-kept sites & helpful staff. Facilities are good, though some suggest more hangers, benches, & better lighting. A few noted blocked toilets & a need for more facilities during busy periods, plus hot water for dishes & better spacing. Recommended for its beach & tranquility.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite (classic)

Liked Showers and toilets were kept super clean. Smoothies from reception were brilliant! Pitch sizes were perfect & had great quiet neighbours. Love the intimacy of the campsite and how close it was to Hayle beach and the surf school was ace. If you get Shaun and Lilly as your instructors you’ll learn lots like my son did. Didn’t leave the campsite for a week. Lidl is down the road for food shop as well as an Asda, M&S and small retail park and a local toy shop if you forget things like we did! Definitely bring a body board for waves when swells are good but dunes are great for boarding!

Disliked The main dune to and from the campsite is the steepest dune along the beach so be prepared for a beast of a calf burner! Could have done with some hot water for washing up but that really didn’t bother us much.

Beach Track primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Location to the most amazing beach! Unbelievable location within the dunes.
Friendly staff, basic but adequate facilities that were well looked after. Rabbits and small birds around the site .

Disliked Small things that didn’t affect our stay but worth pointing out.
1. A few other campers had drones, these are so annoying with the buzzing sound! Worth saying ‘no drones’?
2. Had to hold the shower button down continuously (not a big deal)
3. Staff only on site for a few hours in the middle of the day.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite (classic)

Liked Loved how close it was to the beach

Disliked Understand that there’s no electricity but there could have at least been some solar lights in the showers and toilets. Because there were only a few toilets it meant that the toilet roll ran out daily and although they were cleaned beautifully it was a pain.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite (classic)

Liked Lovely campsite in a good location. Shower block and toilets nearby to the pitches. Love how you just turn up and find your pre-booked spot by looking for your name on a blackboard on your pitch.

Disliked 2 toilets were blocked so only 2/3 working toilets, as well as only having around 4/5 showers so could do with having more toilets and showers to delay waiting. Also had some noisy camping neighbours who were chatting loudly in the early hours of the morning, of course this is not the campsites fault however our pitch was very close to them so could do with a bit more of a space between pitches.

Local attractions

On the outskirts of Hayle, Paradise Park and JungleBarn Cornwall (10 minutes’ drive) is home to small mammals such as otters and red pandas, plus dozens of species of birds, including colourful parrots, flamingoes and a penguin colony. If birding is your jam, continue on to RSPB Hayle Estuary (10 minutes), inhabited by wetland birds. In St Ives (20 minutes by car, or take a 25-minute train ride from Hayle), the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden and Tate St Ives (the latter overlooking sandy Porthmeor Beach) ought to satisfy your art cravings. Then take a stroll through the town’s cobbled streets or along the harbour, stopping for ice cream or fish and chips. Head west to Porthcurno (35 minutes), where the Minack Theatre puts on plays and concerts in a most spectacular setting. The seating is carved right out of the granite cliff, and the stage has the waters of Porthcurno Bay as its dramatic backdrop.
