  • Dog-friendly site five minutes’ walk from a surfing beach in Hayle
  • St Ives 20 minutes’s drive; Minack Theatre 35 minutes
  • On-site surf school and equipment hire, plus yoga sessions and café
Sea, surf and spectacular views – the deal at Sandy Acres Campsite sounds pretty good already, right? But there’s another element that might make it extra sweet, and that’s its dog-friendly nature. Four-legged guests (on a lead) are welcome – and not just on site, but also at the nearby beach, a vast expanse of golden sand also named Sandy Acres (five minutes’ walk, just beyond the Hayle Sand Dunes). As well as its splendid and convenient location, this pleasant site has a relaxed, low-key vibe. That doesn’t mean, however, that there are no perks here. True, there is no electric hook-up (though the owners will be happy to charge your mobile phone in the office), but there are several toilets, hot-water showers and a washing-up area (no hot water there, though). And while there's no fridge to store your grillable items, there is a freezer for your ice packs, plus a small café serving drinks and smoothies. For anything else, the nearest shop is just under a mile away, or you can head into Hayle town (10 minutes’ drive) for supermarkets, restaurants and pubs. With the practical aspects of your holiday taken care of, all you need to do is relax and take advantage of the site’s facilities, which include a surf school (catering to all levels) and equipment hire (from bodyboards and surfboards to wetsuits), plus yoga sessions, which take place on the beach (or in a wooden hut if the weather takes a turn).

What customers say

Cracking spot, close to a grand beach for surfing and sunsets. Staff are dead on, pitches are grand and private. Some think the loos could do with a shelf and a seat, and the climb back up the dunes is a bit of a challenge, but it's peaceful and handy.

Sanitäranlagen ok

Disliked Wir hatten leider Pech mit dem Stellplatz. Direkt beim Eingang und den Sanitäranlagen und sehr laute Nachbarn
Es gibt wenig "Abgrenzung" zum Nachbarn.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (classic)

Liked Wow, what a campsite. We stayed here by accident because our friends live nearby. Very relaxed site. Great access onto the beach, although it is a steep track down. If you want an evening meal & don't want to drive, you can walk along the coastal path for 10 minutes to the next holiday park. There is also a very nice cafe, on the way to the beach.

Disliked The roof on the toilets is clear corrugated plastic, which is fine at night, but makes the toilets and showers very hot during the day.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (super)

Liked Absolutely loved this campsite. It’s so relaxed and we especially liked that there was no music or ball games!
Toilets and showers are cleaned immaculately every day and there is not much of a wait later on in the day to shower.
The pitch was massive and didn’t feel like we were too close to the neighbours. Having hedges between pitches was a bonus as well as having an on site shop that sold milkshakes and iced lattes!
We left yesterday but have already booked for the august bank holiday.

Disliked The sand dune on the way back from the beach. It’s definitely a work out!

Beach cabin (four person)

Liked Just glorious! The most perfect location ever, we stayed in a hut just over the sand dunes and loved the proximity of the beach and the incredible view, especially at sunset. The site is small and peaceful, I was worried there wasn’t enough loos and showers but we never had to wait. They are also kept clean and tidy. Easy to charge phones/power packs etc at reception. I would go back in a heart beat, especially if I could guarantee another week of sunshine! ☀️

Disliked Not really a dislike but folks should be aware that the walk back up from the beach over the dunes is tough going. Don’t get me wrong we managed it laden with beach stuff and surf boards but it’s not easy so anyone with limited mobility or very poor fitness would possibly struggle. On the positive side, it keeps this stretch of beach very quite in comparison so some more accessible locations further along.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (classic)

Liked Showers and toilets were kept super clean. Smoothies from reception were brilliant! Pitch sizes were perfect & had great quiet neighbours. Love the intimacy of the campsite and how close it was to Hayle beach and the surf school was ace. If you get Shaun and Lilly as your instructors you’ll learn lots like my son did. Didn’t leave the campsite for a week. Lidl is down the road for food shop as well as an Asda, M&S and small retail park and a local toy shop if you forget things like we did! Definitely bring a body board for waves when swells are good but dunes are great for boarding!

Disliked The main dune to and from the campsite is the steepest dune along the beach so be prepared for a beast of a calf burner! Could have done with some hot water for washing up but that really didn’t bother us much.

Local attractions

On the outskirts of Hayle, Paradise Park and JungleBarn Cornwall (10 minutes’ drive) is home to small mammals such as otters and red pandas, plus dozens of species of birds, including colourful parrots, flamingoes and a penguin colony. If birding is your jam, continue on to RSPB Hayle Estuary (10 minutes), inhabited by wetland birds. In St Ives (20 minutes by car, or take a 25-minute train ride from Hayle), the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden and Tate St Ives (the latter overlooking sandy Porthmeor Beach) ought to satisfy your art cravings. Then take a stroll through the town’s cobbled streets or along the harbour, stopping for ice cream or fish and chips. Head west to Porthcurno (35 minutes), where the Minack Theatre puts on plays and concerts in a most spectacular setting. The seating is carved right out of the granite cliff, and the stage has the waters of Porthcurno Bay as its dramatic backdrop.
