Got your heart set on Fowey as a place to stay? It’s an excellent choice – this cute little town is a real highlight of Cornwall, with a real sense of heritage as well as some gorgeous sea views. Keeping things very simple for a stay here is Lambs Barn Camping Ground, a wild camping site in a wooded valley on the edge of town, about a kilometre from the village centre. From here you'll also be able to walk along a footpath through the woods down to Readymoney beach, a sheltered sandy cove that’s fabulous for a dip in the sea. Longer walks might take you out onto the South West Coast Path, which runs along the entirety of Cornwall’s coastline, and there’s a bus stop just outside the site for longer jaunts around the county. This site is billed as having wild camping – and that’s almost true, as you’ll be settling down in nature-filled grass meadows for a real sense of countryside calm. There are, however, a few conveniences to make your stay a little more comfortable, including a water supply, gas-powered showers and portable toilets. Laundry facilities are close by if you need them. Down in Fowey you should find plenty to entertain yourselves, including watersports centres (with kayak and paddleboard hire) and riverside walks, plus shops, pubs and places to eat. There’s also a ferry service across the bay to Mevagissey (a route that’s well known for dolphin-spotting opportunities).

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Location

Disliked: Absolutely vile toilets that were overflowing and not emptied! Complained to site owner but he didn’t seem to care and blamed it on ‘not being able to get hold of the company who own the toilets to empty them’! The shower was also terrible. The tarpaulin curtain did not close fully and there was no where dry to leave your stuff when it rained (there is no roof). There was a dry bag but it was wetter in the inside than it was out. Everyone left early because of the disgusting toilets. This place might be ok early in the season when emptying might occur more often but it was so much of a health hazard that I vomited because of the smell.

From the manager: Dear Kirsty
My apologies for your bad experience with our toilets. They are cleaned twice daily and there is no excuse other than we underestimated how busy the site would become over the bank holiday weekend. Its our first year and we will strive to better ourselves going forward. As for the shower, we think and have been comended for its originality, power, heat, quirky feel and look! As for your clothes, we as you stated supply a very large 'dry bag' so that they stay dry while you shower, we surely can not be blamed when inconsiderate people leave it open to the elements.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Great location. Close to Fowey.
The shower is legendary. Outdoor, looking up to the sky with lovely hot water.

Disliked: Hard to find flat pitch.
No discount for hikers minus the car.
Regulation of quiet times needed.

From the manager: Dear Yohan

I'm sorry that we did not greet you when you arrived at Lambs barn, there is a large sign on arrival that points out a phone number so as to contact us as we regularly have to be on another part of the farm! When I arrived back to the campsite and saw your tent you had already left to go into Fowey.
Yes, as you say you arrived by bike and had a one man tent! At no time did you telephone or request a reduction and as far as I and Pitchup knew was that you were happy and had booked a tent pitch which is £19.50 for up to 2 persons with a tent.
We do have rules and enforce 'quiet time' after midnight, my van was less than 20 metres from yours and we did not notice or have reason to investigate any noise.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Location was very good. Short walk into the town which is small but beautiful.

Disliked: The unlevel hill location, the shower and especially the toilets which were really bad and unclean.
If you need shower and toilet facilities, I would not recommend this site.

Zoe C. The reviewer booked through Pitchup.com

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: We liked that it was the central to Fowey and close to many attractions. This is a very basic camping site and was great for what we needed. It had a shower, which was hot/warm. (When I say shower it is a wooden platform in the field with a curtain around it. But it does work!) The site was clean and tidy but is on a slope, we had to adjust a few times to not roll over when trying to sleep.

Disliked: The toilets were gross and not clean. No toilet paper. The smell was pungent that if you were having a shower and someone went to the toilet, you could smell it. The toilets are porter loos and maybe should have been emptied/cleaned.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Zoe
As you rightly point out our toilets were not up to your expectations and i assure you that they were not up to ours! We are addressing this smelly problem and are striving to open next year with a sweet smelling improvement!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Friendly person on the entrance. Lovely views and plenty of space. Easy access to Fowey town - quick walk past the school and through the main car park.
Quiet at night.
Shower was lovely and hot and not busy.

Disliked: As described in blurb, toilets were more basic - portaloos.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely site, well maintained and site manager was friendly and helpful with lots of local tips. The location was perfect for walk to the beach. Facilities were basic but all we needed. We had a great time with the kids here!

Disliked: Portable toilets are always a bit nasty, maybe an upgrade to eco toilets would make for a nicer experience. Also the shower was hard to maintain a consistent temperature.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Katie
Thank you for your warm comments and its good to hear the kids loved the area, it is our first year using this site and take on board your dislikes and we will strive to improve on this as we go forward.

Liked: Lovely little pop up campsite ,cheaper if you just turn up £25.0 on app £10.0 at site without booking through app.Owner lovely well looked after only porta loos but very clean.

Disliked: In consistant pricing

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely comments about our site here in Fowey.
You are mistaken regarding our pricing here, i believe you have missread the sign. There is a price for parking only a van during the day of £5, this is only for people that wish to visit Fowey after they have packed up and moved off the pitch at or before 10.30am or visiting (parking) for the day (8am-7pm) and walking down to the beach!
Best wishes

John
