  • Family-run site on a 2000-acre working farm in the South Downs
  • On the site of Bignor Roman Villa; 25 minutes' drive from Chichester
  • Located in a dark sky reserve; August sunflower maze and picking patch
Friends, Romans, country fans – take a look at this neat little farm site deep in the South Downs. Bignor Farms Camping at Bignor Roman Villa marries ancient history with rural views and ultra-low levels of light pollution for a break full of learning, roaming and stargazing. The surrounding area is stonkingly scenic (these are the Downs, after all) and mightily easy to access, too – the long-distance South Downs Way is about 1.5 miles from site. Those looking to refuel while out and about will find barrowloads of welcoming country pubs on their explores; the nearest is a 25-minute stroll away. Barbecues are welcome at Bignor Farms Camping at Bignor Roman Villa, so self-prepped grub is another option here. Local produce can be tracked down at the farm shop just 10 minutes' drive away from the site. Head to Pulborough (15 minutes' drive) to pick up other bits and pieces at a well-stocked supermarket. Amenities like portable toilets and showers mean you won't have to live totally ancient-style while you're here, but don't expect luxuries like underfloor heating or a spa… unless, that is, you're planning on checking out the Roman-built versions at the museum next door. Bignor Roman Villa also has a tearoom, gift shop and picnic area that you're free to use during opening hours. Heading to this site during August? The farm's sunflower maze and picking patch have pride of place here at the height of summer; kids and adults alike are encouraged to give it a go and be thoroughly bamboozled by its twists and turns…

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely, small campsite in a really special setting. You can walk out onto the South Downs, see wonderful views and you have the Roman Villa to explore if you want to. You can also use the loos at the Villa. Small sized, temporary site - felt like we were really in the countryside. 20 minutes or so easy, peaceful walk to reasonably priced pub for good food and drinks. Very easy to book, clear directions and instructions given.

Disliked: Because it's temporary, it only has portaloos on the site. They were kept clean and stocked up though! Good that campers can also use the toilets at the villa.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The location is brilliant; a remote field overlooking the South Downs and a Roman villa yet easy to reach whether by car, bicycle of walking. Sitting outside a tent watching the sun set and then stargazing after a lovely meal at a pub a mile walk across fields and a wooded valley, we felt very privileged to be there. There is good walking at nearby Bignor Hill and on the many footpaths and bridleways including the South Downs Way and Monarch’s Way taking in Roman Stane Street with views to Halnaker windmill and the sea. We also enjoyed going round the villa and the sunflower maze (for a small charge) while there and had tea and cake at the small cafe. The owner Lisa and staff are friendly and very welcoming. I have stayed here with a different family member over several years and will continue to come back. We love it because there are not too many people but plenty of room for privacy to enjoy sitting and contemplating, playing ball games with your children or just chilling with a bottle of wine and good company.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The setting was beautiful and peaceful. Only a small number of pitches and the facilities, although limited, were very clean.

Disliked: Only a couple of issues but the main one is that the grass wasn’t cut and therefore you end up with wet feet when it has rained or early in the morning form the dew. I appreciate it’s not easy when people are pitched up but at least keep the central area cut and try to cut edges as people leave. It would make a massive difference. 😊 The toilets did run out of water while we were there but was rectified fairly promptly and the shower can run hot and cold. Also you do have to be creative with washing up dishes as there’s no facility for that.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Great position with lovely views. Lisa was very welcoming and helpful. Large pitches with plenty of space for the children to play in. The site felt tucked away in the beautiful countryside but with lots to see and do nearby. Great showers too. We look forward to coming back to stay again.

Disliked: At very busy times there might be a need for a third toilet and shower.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Great location, fantastic site, very good host. I highly recommend the place to those who just have a solo tent or families with large gazebos. It's surrounded by beautiful views, not to mention the Roman museum on site. Boiling hot showers and plenty of portable loos. We ordered ahead of our arrival a bbq, eggs, bacon, sausages, bread and milk from Lisa, the friendliest host one can wish for.

Disliked: Nothing to add to be honest.
