Bignor Farms Camping at Bignor Roman Villa

9.7

This park does not currently take bookings here on Pitchup.com.

General

  • Family-run site on a 2000-acre working farm in the South Downs
  • On the site of Bignor Roman Villa; 25 minutes' drive from Chichester
  • Located in a dark sky reserve; 12-acre maize maze during August

Friends, Romans, country fans – take a look at this neat little farm site deep in the South Downs. Bignor Farms Camping at Bignor Roman Villa marries ancient history with rural views and ultra-low levels of light pollution for hols full of learning, roaming and stargazing.

The surrounding area is stonkingly scenic (these are the Downs, after all) and mightily easy to access, too – the long-distance South Downs Way is about 1.5 miles from site. Those looking to refuel while out and about will find barrowloads of welcoming country pubs on their explores; the nearest is a 25-minute stroll away.

Barbecues are welcome at Bignor Farms Camping at Bignor Roman Villa, so self-prepped grub is another option here. Fresh produce is sold on site when in season; head to Pulborough (15 minutes' drive) to pick up other bits and pieces at a well-stocked supermarket.

Amenities like portaloos and showers mean you won't have to live totally ancient-style while you're here, but don't expect luxuries like underfloor heating or a spa… unless, that is, you're planning on checking out the Roman-built versions at the museum next door. Bignor Roman Villa also has a tearoom, gift shop and picnic area that you're free to use during opening hours.

Heading to this site during August? The farm's 12-acre maize maze has pride of place here at the height of summer; kids and adults alike are encouraged to give it a go and be thoroughly bamboozled by its twists and turns…

We stayed at Bignor Villa campsite for the second time this summer and it was just as great of an experience as it was last year. Clean facilities, friendly camping neighbours, Lisa is lovely. Great location by Bignor Hill, easy access to the South Downs Way and the best place to be for stargazing at night. We will be back again for many summers in the future!

This was our second visit to Bignor Roman Villa ( we were there at the same time last year). It's a little gem of a site - very simple, no frills but spotlessly clean showers and toilets with plenty of space. Lisa is brilliant; welcoming, informative and even tolerant of our silly spaniel who felt he had to protect our tent by growling every time she spoke to us. The villa cafe is good - my husband was very keen on the millionaire shortbread. It's a great area for walking and beaches are easy to get to too. We found lots of really good pubs in and around Arundel doing great food and dog friendly. Really recommend this place for a stripped back, relaxing stay.

Great location, fantastic site, very good host.

I highly recommend the place to those who just have a solo tent or families with large gazebos. It's surrounded by beautiful views, not to mention the Roman museum on site. Boiling hot showers and plenty of portable loos.

We ordered ahead of our arrival a bbq, eggs, bacon, sausages, bread and milk from Lisa, the friendliest host one can wish for.

Amazing camp ground, quiet, no noise from roads. Excellent night sky. Local wildlife, deer, owls and bats. Facilities were all that we needed. Very clean. Roman villa is a must to see and the added bonus of the sunflower maze. Also ver close to Arundel. We loved our stay and will be back.
