The main building

  • Rural site in the Surrey Hills, 15 minutes' drive from Dorking
  • Surrounded by 4,000 acres of woodland and Hurtwood bike trails
  • Café on site for breakfast and lunch; two pubs a 20-minute walk away
Hikes through the hills – pretty much a given for a UK youth hostel. But also theme parks, luxury driving experiences and one of the country's finest vineyards? Such are the diverse days out that await for guests at Hurtwood Hideout, a rural retreat in the Surrey Hills National Landscape. Those coming along here with outdoorsy activities in mind will be well sorted. The site’s surrounds take in 4,000 acres of woodland; Holmbury Hill, Box Hill and Leith Hill are all popular local spots to stretch the legs, and the 153-mile North Downs Way is four miles away. There are some fab mountain bike trails in the Hurtwood around the site; if you’ve not been able to bring a bike it’s a cinch to hire one in the village or in Dorking. Not planning to set foot in a hiking boot? No problem – there's plenty more to keep you busy in this part of Surrey. Take a drive of 15 minutes to Dorking for a train to take you to London in an hour or so if you really want a change of scenery. Food is, of course, vital for any and all of the local activities. Easily sort out your breakfasts, lunches and caffeine fix at the on-site café, open from 9am to 3.30pm. On Friday evenings during the summer months, there's also a pizza truck on site. There are two excellent pubs in the village of Holmbury St Mary (a 20-minute walk), too, but you need not walk that far, as there's a small bar on site that sells alcohol until 4pm.

What customers say

Praised for its woodland setting with direct access to trails. Guests enjoyed friendly staff, an on-site cafe, and food trucks. Facilities are good, though some noted inconsistent toilet/shower cleanliness and uneven pitches. Bell tent air mattresses were a letdown for some. Manager is responsive to feedback.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Decent price. Great location. Quiet. Shady. Cafe on site and a bike place for problems or hire. Toilets and showers.
I had a great stay and would definitely stay here again.

Disliked Not really a dislike but it wasn't the flatest of camping areas and depending on when you arrive you might struggle to get a flat spot.

Liked Cafe, Pizza Hut, friendly and helpful staff

Disliked Although the toilet/shower/washing up block is shared with the public, more regular cleaning and replenishing of sundries would be helpful.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Wonderful location in the woods, good facilities, friendly staff.

Camped for one night to hike the local area. We didn't know in advance that that Friday evening happened to be "pizza and beer" night so it was probably more lively than usual. Good atmosphere!

Quiet during the night, no issues with noise.
