YHA Holmbury Exterior

General

  • Rural site in the Surrey Hills, 15 minutes' drive from Dorking
  • Surrounded by 4,000 acres of woodland and Hurtwood bike trails
  • Restaurant/bar on site; two pubs and village a 20-minute walk away

Hikes through the hills – pretty much a given for a UK youth hostel. But also theme parks, luxury driving experiences and one of the country's finest vineyards? Such are the diverse days out that await for guests at YHA Holmbury St Mary, a rural retreat in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Those coming along here with outdoorsy activities in mind will be well sorted. The site’s surrounds take in 4,000 acres of woodland; Holmbury Hill, Box Hill and Leith Hill are all popular local spots to stretch the legs, and the 153-mile North Downs Way is four miles away. There are some fab mountain bike trails in the Hurtwood around the site; if you’ve not been able to bring a bike it’s a cinch to hire one in the village or in Dorking.

Not planning to set foot in a hiking boot? No problem – there's plenty more to keep you busy in this part of Surrey. Take a drive of 15 minutes to Dorking for a train to take you to London in an hour or so if you really want a change of scenery.

Food is, of course, vital for any and all of the local activities, so it’s a fine idea to start your day with one of the breakfasts served on site and then put in an order for an evening meal too: supper club is served at 7pm, with last orders taken by 6. There are two excellent pubs in the village of Holmbury St Mary (a 20-minute walk) too, if but your legs won’t get you that far you’ll no doubt be chuffed to hear that there’s a fully-licensed bar on site serving up wines and beers.

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Please be aware that guests are not permitted to bring their own alcohol onto the fully-licensed premises. There is a small bar serving a range of beers and wines.

Evening meals are on offer from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and must be ordered by 6.30pm. The bar serves beer, wine and soft drinks until 11pm. Breakfast is served from 7.30am to 9am.

Fantastic peaceful setting, was wonderful to wake up to birdsong and be in the middle of silent woods in minutes. Breakfast was hearty. Brian has a great manner, warm, welcoming and helpful, also the young man on reception in the evening was great. Other staff (spoke to less) also pleasant and helpful. Shower was good, toilets clean. Really nice to be able to get a nice coffee. I’d definitely come back.

    Disliked:

Kitchen isn’t great. Strange smell but also a bit pokey. Not the fault of hostel but other guests hadn’t cleaned up after themselves which made preparing food harder. In showers, I think the floor could do with a hard plastic mat to drain, it’s quite muddy and wet and nowhere for water puddles to drain to.
Had problems with light in pod, but I think this will be sorted. Pod is very very comfortable. Had amazing sleep.
Not a dislike - but if walking from Gomshall, be aware of how manically people drive on this narrow country road (quite nerve wracking)

Quiet woodland camping with great walks around. Good clean facilities and friendly staff!

    Disliked:

No bbqs, which is a shame, but with it being in the woods I guess it’s understandable.

From the manager...

Thank you Paul for your feedback and sharing your experience with us

It fantastic to read that we were able to provide a good clean facility and friendly atmosphere

No BBQ or Fires, in the interest of safety the majority of The Hurtwood and hostel grounds lies on a Peaty soil which allows fires to spread underground. This means that even though you may have been careful and put your fire out, it can still be alight underground and spread. We understand that this is disappointing so we do provide a fully equipped self-catering kitchen which all campers are more than welcome to take full advantage of.

We are delight to see that you would recommend us and return, until then we wish you all the best on your travels, happy hosteling

Best wishes, Dan

From the manager...

Thank you for your recent feedback

Its disappointing for us to read that you wouldn't visit us again or recommend to a friend, I do hope that you may give us another opportunity in the future.

Our car park does have its limits and can hold roughly ten cars, although we are fortunate to have a large public car park next door which can hold a further 50 cars. We would recommend making use of this free car park when ours is full.

Please keep enjoying YHA and happy hosteling
