Hikes through the hills – pretty much a given for a UK youth hostel. But also theme parks, luxury driving experiences and one of the country's finest vineyards? Such are the diverse days out that await for guests at Hurtwood Hideout, a rural retreat in the Surrey Hills National Landscape. Those coming along here with outdoorsy activities in mind will be well sorted. The site’s surrounds take in 4,000 acres of woodland; Holmbury Hill, Box Hill and Leith Hill are all popular local spots to stretch the legs, and the 153-mile North Downs Way is four miles away. There are some fab mountain bike trails in the Hurtwood around the site; if you’ve not been able to bring a bike it’s a cinch to hire one in the village or in Dorking. Not planning to set foot in a hiking boot? No problem – there's plenty more to keep you busy in this part of Surrey. Take a drive of 15 minutes to Dorking for a train to take you to London in an hour or so if you really want a change of scenery. Food is, of course, vital for any and all of the local activities. Easily sort out your breakfasts, lunches and caffeine fix at the on-site café, open from 9am to 3.30pm. On Friday evenings during the summer months, there's also a pizza truck on site. There are two excellent pubs in the village of Holmbury St Mary (a 20-minute walk), too, but you need not walk that far, as there's a small bar on site that sells alcohol until 4pm.

Dit boscamping wordt geprezen om zijn uitstekende, vriendelijke personeel en goede faciliteiten, waarbij veel gasten genieten van de natuurlijke omgeving en de nabijheid van wandel- en fietspaden. Recente verbeteringen hebben de kampeerervaring verbeterd. Ik was blij met All the people I met running this site were very welcoming without being over the top. Nice grounded group. The showers were lovely and hot almost immediately which was nice with it raining most of my stay.

Ik was niet blij met Experienced some falling branches which I appreciate is a potential hazard in windy weather. Some attention to the more decayed trees might help prevent issues in the future.

Ik was blij met Lovely setting, staff were friendly

Ik was niet blij met They didn't read our booking notes until we checked-in. Cafe is closed to campers from 4pm. Toilets ran out of toilet roll. Sinks for washing up are cold water only, which seems an odd choice when the toilets in the same block have hot water. The large group staying in the hostel were outside singing long after the supposed "quiet hours". We didn't mind the singing, but it seems unfair to ask the camping guests to be quiet from 8pm if the rule doesn't apply to everyone.

Van de manager: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re very sorry that the toilets ran out of toilet roll during your stay; this should not have happened, and we apologies for the inconvenience, we are normally really on top of this. We had a few staff off this week so struggled a bit.

Just to clarify, our quiet hours are from 10pm until 8am, rather than from 8pm, so this may simply have been misread. We same rules for noises with campers and the hostel groups.

Ik was blij met The place is not too busy and the staff is very friendly and nice.

Ik was niet blij met They locked 1 out of the 2 shower room for the night I stayed. We have over 30 campers around, sharing one shower room. We ended up waiting for over hours for taking a shower. And when it’s our turn, the shower room is disgusting with mud and excessive water on the floor.

Ik was blij met We had a wonderful holiday here with a group of 10! The staff were friendly and welcoming, especially Josh, who went above and beyond to help us with several issues. The campsite is well-equipped, clean, and very well maintained. The cafe, pizza truck, and little bar made our stay even more enjoyable. This has definitely become our favourite campsite!

Ik was blij met Had lots of space, campsite was very quiet midweek. Meant we could pick where we wanted to pitch up and had all the room we needed for a large tent. Ideal place for a camp site too on the edge of the forest. Toilets and showers were adequate. Cafe was great to have, very friendly and good selection. Parking was really convenient too, we parked next to the pitch. Picnic benches to eat on scattered across the campground which was helpful.

Ik was niet blij met Toilets weren’t always stocked up on toilet roll, i’d bring some each visit. Floor was also very muddy and wet from showers.
