The main building

  • Rural site in the Surrey Hills, 15 minutes' drive from Dorking
  • Surrounded by 4,000 acres of woodland and Hurtwood bike trails
  • Café on site for breakfast and lunch; two pubs a 20-minute walk away
Hikes through the hills – pretty much a given for a UK youth hostel. But also theme parks, luxury driving experiences and one of the country's finest vineyards? Such are the diverse days out that await for guests at Hurtwood Hideout, a rural retreat in the Surrey Hills National Landscape. Those coming along here with outdoorsy activities in mind will be well sorted. The site’s surrounds take in 4,000 acres of woodland; Holmbury Hill, Box Hill and Leith Hill are all popular local spots to stretch the legs, and the 153-mile North Downs Way is four miles away. There are some fab mountain bike trails in the Hurtwood around the site; if you’ve not been able to bring a bike it’s a cinch to hire one in the village or in Dorking. Not planning to set foot in a hiking boot? No problem – there's plenty more to keep you busy in this part of Surrey. Take a drive of 15 minutes to Dorking for a train to take you to London in an hour or so if you really want a change of scenery. Food is, of course, vital for any and all of the local activities. Easily sort out your breakfasts, lunches and caffeine fix at the on-site café, open from 9am to 3.30pm. On Friday evenings during the summer months, there's also a pizza truck on site. There are two excellent pubs in the village of Holmbury St Mary (a 20-minute walk), too, but you need not walk that far, as there's a small bar on site that sells alcohol until 4pm.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Small wooded site with loads of walks on your doorstep. Birdsong wonderful to wake up to.

Disliked Didn't like being fenced in and there is a fairly large hostel on site which takes the edge off being in nature vibe if that's what you are going for. Clearly visible in pictures of site but it's one of those things you only realise how it's going to sit with you when you get there.
Staff didn't ask my name at all, even when I went to sort the mix up with the booking through pitch.com (thought I'd booked 2 nights but email came through with only 1 - watch out for "per stay" at checkout and double check nights etc). Staff just asked me what I paid and rang that through the till without any invoice etc which seemed a bit scammy.
Toilets / showers / waking up area could have been cleaner but we were right at start of the season and they probably hadn't geared up to it yet.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Nice site - I was completing a sponsored sleep out for HM forces veterans and picked this site as was near Surrey Hills.

Nice area for practising navigation, there were alot of cyclists doing down hill mountain biking.

I was only person at the site as was in March however I imagine as the seasons move into spring and summer it will be a busy site.

It has wifi which was a plus and a small cafe. There are toilets/showers and a wash up area for pots and pans.

I felt safe staying on site even though I was only person camping again probably because of it being a Sunday and time of year.

I would camp here again.

Disliked Cant really think of anything that springs out.

Family Hideaway bell tent

Liked Great location and lovely people.

Disliked There wasn't any mention of the double beds being inflatable beds. I would think that for £80 a night for two people we would have real mattresses.
