  • Rural setting on a farm with fabulous Essex and Cambridgeshire views
  • A 10-minutes drive to the IWM Duxford, and 30 minutes to Cambridge
  • Dog-friendly pitches; pub in 15 minutes’ walk, shops 10 minutes’ drive
The grass pitches at Pightle Farm are found in the Field of Dreams, a meadow with amazing 360-degree views at one of the highest points in Essex. And all you aviation buffs, with these views you might even get to see a Spitfire on a practice flight taking off from the Imperial War Museum Duxford (10 minutes’ drive). This is a working arable farm, so you might hear tractors and machinery out and about, but apart from that, there are only two friendly black labs (you’re welcome to bring your own dogs too by the way) and a small apiary of honey bees on the premises to disturb your peace. Facilities in the camping field – which stretches to almost an acre – run to two flushing toilets and sinks with hot running water for washing up. There’s also a drinking water tap, recycling bins and chemical waste disposal. The owners are happy to put together breakfast baskets for you as well as supply homemade cakes (an extra charge applies), and if you’re low on supplies for the barbecue, head into Barley or Ickelton (both 10 minutes) to stock up on bits and bobs in convenience stores. Not into cooking for yourselves (you are on your hols after all)? There’s a cracking pub in Chrishall (15 minutes’ walk) and many more for you to discover within a 20-minute drive. Sitting on the Essex and Cambridgeshire border as it does, the site certainly has a rural vibe – there are masses of public footpaths accessed directly from the pitches – but is also very handy for the M11 at Duxford (10 minutes’ drive) and makes easy driving from London or Cambridge.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Warm welcome by owner Sarah. The site is very peaceful, well kept, with clean toilets and a shower. The pitches have superb views over open “big sky” countryside, with bird life and planes from Duxford to watch. On clear nights the dark sky provided a chance to view the stars and satellites overhead. It was very peaceful during our stay and other users of the campsite were friendly and considerate. The site felt secure with an electric gate to the farm entrance for which Sarah will lend you a remote opener (on payment of a deposit) if you are coming and going frequently. The nearby Red Cow pub had a good selection of beers and serves food although we didn’t eat there. We really enjoyed our stay.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Beautiful site, well kept with two toilets and shower. What made it exceptional was the lovely warm welcome from Sarah. A fabulous weekend. Grateful thanks to Ollie who gave us a lift to Audley End. A smashing young man and we wish him all the best at Oxford and his future career.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: A true gem of a campsite! Arrived to a lovely warm welcome from Sarah. Fabulous level and spacious field with spectacular views. The shower and toilet facilities were a bonus and kept beautifully clean and the site felt very safe and secure. Perfect location for visiting Audley End House for a Heritage Live event. Had a delicious meal in the Red Cow which is roughly a 20 minute walk from the site. Would definitely visit again and explore more in the area.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: What an unexpectedly beautiful and delightfully simple campsite! We only stayed for one night, in the area visiting family, but it was perfect for our needs. The site has an amazing view north towards (and past) Cambridge - who'd have thought somewhere like this existed in Essex! The facilities are very simple but all you need. No hook up but if you have solar you're ok. Absolutely silent at night, only a handful of other campers there. Pitch where you like, but loads of space given a limit on numbers. Bliss.

Disliked: Nothing!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful location with amazing Views. Very well kept field. Good toilet and shower facilities. I had to leave as was in pain. Leaving my 18 year old son with SEN & his girlfriend. When I couldn't reach them on their phones I contacted Sarah, the owner. Sarah went to see them and charged their phones. It was an unusually cold night for Aug. Sarah took them logs to build a fire which was very kind. Nothing was too much trouble.

Disliked: They couldn't find anywhere to do washing up. Doesnt mean there wasn't but they didn't ask and couldn't find anything sign posted.

Local attractions

If you’re even remotely interested in aviation history, you’re bound to end up at the Imperial War Museum Duxford (10 minutes’ drive), where you can sit in a Vulcan cockpit, tour the aircraft hangars and maybe treat yourself to a flight in an iconic Spitfire from WWII. Being so convenient for the M11, you’re in pole position for trips to the lovely university town of Cambridge (30 minutes). Spend the day pretending to be a student (how hard can that be?); take a punting trip along the Backs, and have a nose around the gorgeous King’s and Jesus colleges. Take a look at the art treasures in Fitzwilliam Museum, and when you’ve had enough culture, slope off to a pub for a crafty snifter. To get out and about in the fresh air, look no further than the formal plantings and woodlands walks in Capability Brown-designed parkland at Audley End House and Gardens, while the trails in RSPB Fowlmere bird sanctuary are hotspots for spotting kingfishers and warblers flitting around in the reeds.
