  • Quiet family-run Cumbria site almost on the England-Scotland border
  • Hadrian's Wall, Lake District or Dumfries a half-hour drive away
  • Easy access to M6, A7 and National Cycle Route 7
Which way will you go – north to Scotland, west to the Solway coast, east to Hadrian’s Wall or south to Carlisle and the Lake District? The options are indeed plentiful when you stay at High Gaitle Caravan Park, a quiet family-run site in the Cumbria countryside. This handily located site is just off the A6071 between Longtown (two minutes’ drive) and Gretna (five minutes), putting it almost on the border between Scotland and England. Easy access to/from the M6, A7 and National Cycle Route 7 make this a useful spot for a short stopover on a long journey, but as you can see from the list above there are plenty of options for entertainment nearby if you’re staying over for a longer break. It’s a fairly simple setup here, with an emphasis on doing the essentials well rather than providing lots of facilities. That means you’ll have access to bathrooms (with a wheelchair-accessible area), a chemical disposal point and a washing-up area, but you shouldn't expect things like wifi or a play area. Pitches are nicely flat and sheltered by trees, and you’ll be allowed to bring along a barbecue for a bit of outdoor cookery. Dogs are also welcome on site. Need any help while you're here? Friendly manager Steven lives on site and is happy to offer local advice – the family have lived here for many years, so they certainly know their way around.

What customers say

This is a clean, well-maintained campground with friendly, helpful owners. Facilities are basic but spotless, with thoughtful extras. Guests love the spacious sites, peaceful atmosphere, and convenient M6 location. The enclosed dog run is a plus. Minor road noise is noted but usually not an issue.

Disliked Our pitch was too far form the electric box, so we paid for one but we couldn’t use it.

From the manager: Hi,
Sorry to hear that you were too far away from the electric hook up. We do stock long leads if you don't have one to borrow.
Hopefully we can accommodate you next time.

From the manager: Thank you so much, Thomas, your review is absolutely fantastic, and we’re thrilled you enjoyed your stay.

“Absolutely outstanding, I would give more stars if I could. The attention to detail with free toothbrushes, coffee, tea, ice cream is unique. Absolutely recommended. Everything spotlessly clean and tidy. A proper fenced dog meadow is rare.”

We’re over the moon that you found everything tip‑top and appreciated all the little touches, we put a lot of care into those details, so it’s wonderful to hear they stood out. And we’re especially happy your dog loved the enclosed exercise area; our four‑legged guests deserve a great holiday too.

Thank you again for your kind words and your photos, we’d be delighted to welcome you back to the park anytime.

Liked Facilities simple but good, clean and warm. Hot drinks station in washing up room a bonus. We only stayed for a short stop-over but we were welcomed warmly.

Disliked A few noisy ducks woke us early but we could probably have got back to sleep if we didn't need to make an early start.

From the manager: Thank you so much, Yvonne, we really appreciate you taking the time to leave a review.

We’re delighted your short stop‑over was warm, welcoming, and comfortable. It’s lovely to hear the facilities felt clean, simple, and just what you needed, and we’re glad the hot drinks station in the washing‑up room was a helpful bonus during your stay.

Those early‑morning ducks do like to make themselves known, but we’re pleased they didn’t spoil your visit, and it sounds like your early start meant you were up and away before they settled down again.

Thank you for recommending us and planning to visit again. We’d be very happy to welcome you back to the park whenever you’re next passing through.

Liked Site is clean and tidy, it has a large enclosed dog exercise area at the top of the field which is great.
Well placed for trips to Brampton,Carlisle & Silloth-on-Solway. The lad who ran the site was very pleasant and helpful.

Disliked The road noise was quite loud at times. Kids running about till midnight on one of the nights we were there. No Wi-Fi but a good 5g signal.

From the manager: Thank you so much, Ernie, we really appreciate you taking the time to share such a balanced and thoughtful review.

We’re delighted you found the park clean, tidy, and well looked after, and it’s great to hear the enclosed dog exercise area was a hit. It’s also lovely to know our location worked well for exploring Brampton, Carlisle and Silloth‑on‑Solway.

We’re sorry to hear the road noise and late‑night children affected the peace a little during your stay. While some things are outside our control, we always want guests to feel comfortable, so your feedback is genuinely helpful. And although we don’t currently offer Wi‑Fi, it’s good to know the 5G signal worked well for you.

Thank you again for recommending us and planning to visit in the future. We’d be very happy to welcome you back to the park.

Powered grass campsite

Liked It’s a small peaceful site, facilities are clean and plentiful. The owners really go above and beyond for anyone staying, they have some really nice touches in the bathrooms and utility room, I particularly enjoyed the map in there which has pins available to pop in to show where you’ve travelled from. I would take smidge incase of any midgies fortunately we didn’t come across any.

Disliked The weather but unfortunately that can’t be controlled 😂

From the manager: Thank you so much, Claire, your review is absolutely wonderful to read.

We’re really pleased you enjoyed your stay on one of our electric grass pitches and found the park peaceful, clean, and full of those little touches we love adding. It’s great to hear the facilities felt plentiful and well looked after, and we’re delighted you enjoyed the map in the utility room, it’s become a favourite with guests, and we love seeing where everyone has travelled from.

Thank you as well for mentioning how much the owners go above and beyond. Steven will be chuffed to bits reading that, he puts a lot of heart into keeping the park welcoming and comfortable for everyone.

And yes… the weather does like to keep us on our toes, but we’re glad it didn’t spoil your stay.

It means a lot that you’ve already recommended us to others and plan to return. We’d be very happy to welcome you back to the park again.

Local attractions

Sticking to the English side of the border first, you may like to head to Carlisle (20 minutes' drive) for the castle, cathedral and Tullie House Museum, perhaps taking a detour to Walby Farm Park (15 minutes), Solway Aviation Museum (20 minutes) or Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre (20 minutes) en route. Head further down the M6 and you’ll get to the Lake District National Park (about half an hour) for walks, watersports and boat trips. There are lots of great walks over to the east, too, in the Northumberland National Park or the North Pennines National Landscape. Some of those trails take in sections of Hadrian’s Wall – or you can head directly to top spots like the Roman Army Museum (half an hour) and Housesteads Roman Fort (40 minutes). Moving north into Scotland, your first stop will surely be Gretna (five minutes) – you may not be eloping, as many couples once did, but the designer outlet may still furnish you with a new outfit or two. From there, it’s not far at all to places like Annandale Distillery (15 minutes) and The Devil’s Porridge Museum (10 minutes), telling the story of Gretna’s World War I munitions factory.
