The neatly maintained camping field
Well-maintained pitches
Secure parking
Car park entrance

  • Quiet family-friendly pop-up site in the Lake District National Park
  • Derwentwater 10 minutes’ walk; Keswick shops five minutes’ drive
  • Activity centre next door and River Greta strolls from the pitches
A handy five minutes’ drive from Keswick shops, tearooms and pubs in the Lake District National Park, the spacious pitches at Keswick Camping sit on a well-maintained, level grass field. You’ll certainly have plenty to do there, what with the activity centre on site, tennis courts within 10 minutes’ walk and a local golf course (10 minutes’ drive) nearby too. This pop-up site is set up for peace-loving outdoorsy types and families, so if you’re looking for rowdy late nights it’s just not the place for you. The camping field has room for kicking a ball around with the kids, and you can soon be out in the countryside to give any dogs a stretch of their paws. Alternatively, you can have a quiet ramble into Keswick along the River Greta, which runs alongside the pitches. As befits its back-to-nature, adventure camping vibe, there are few facilities – no electric hook-ups, showers or cooking facilities – but there are spotless separate loos for men and women, and standing water taps around the perimeter of the field. If you need to stock up on basics, there’s a small supermarket within five minutes’ stroll; anything else you should be able to source in Keswick. Need sightseeing inspiration? Keswick Information Centre (five minutes) has got you covered.

What customers say

Great location, a quick walk to Keswick. Guests loved the clean restrooms and good value. Some found the ground tough for tent stakes and noted occasional camper noise. Basic but tidy, perfect for short trips.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Easy access to Keswick

Disliked Toilets were basic and insufficient for the site. ( one cubicle and two urinals is not enough)
Rubbish left on the pitches ( pegs, bottle tops and old tea bags - nice)
Ground was very rocky ( difficult to peg down) we tried different areas of the site and it was the same. We stayed at other small sites with much better facilities for less money.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Loved it nice parking area field is fenced off with multiple water points. Toilets were clean. Obviously there is no showers but for a short stay it’s no problem that wet wipes can’t solve 😁just a 10 min walk into Keswick centre it’s ideal

Disliked Only issue is ground beneath grass is very stony so need to be careful fitting tent pegs

From the manager: Thanks Ian for your review we really appreciate the feedback.

we really enjoyed your quick shower tips (wet wipes) for other campers, great advice :)

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Everything! We had amazing weather. The site was like a sun trap. Not over crowded at all. The toilet block was really pleasant. Location wise you couldn’t get any better!
Can’t wait to return 😁

Disliked Only thing that would improve is a couple of showers but for a few nights stay it really isn’t a problem.

From the manager: We are so pleased you had a fab time at Keswick Camping Site, and that the weather was great for you! We always looking to improve the campsite and so your feedback is so helpful we have taken the request for showers into account and hopefully we accommodate this next year.

Thanks Again

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked The site was very easy to find and the location was great. Very handy.
Booking online was straightforward.
The price for one pitch is reasonable.
The toilets were clean and bright.

Disliked I had two single tents and had to pay for two pitches, despite our square footage being smaller than a six man tent paying for one pitch; this seems a little inflexible.
The parking was not helpful; I had to leave my car on a side street about three minutes walk away.
The site is promoted as family friendly yet there was a group of lads who were drinking and shouting until the small hours. They left bottles and cans everywhere and uncooked chicken. I would certainly not let children play on the grass as a result.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We are taking a look into the campsite and have a revaluation of pricing and how to make it more accommodating for campers, so feedback like this is very valuable and we are very grateful!

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Location is great. Easy to find.
Very clean toilets.
Price is competitive for one plot without question.
Site was maintained well; short grass and clear boundary fence.

Disliked Parking was a challenge. I was able to park earlier in the day but had to park on a side street on arriving back in the evening. The lack of marked bays is an issue. Could be easily remedied.
Although we had two single person tents had to pay for two plots. Seems a little unreasonable when our two tents combined took up less space than a six man tent paying for one plot. Doesn’t really make sense, and the lack of flexibility on this seemed a bit unreasonable.

Local attractions

If you’re looking for lots of outdoor adventure, well, you’re in the right place. Derwentwater is close at hand for sailing, kayaking or paddleboarding on the water, and you can book lake cruises on wooden craft from the Keswick Launch Ticket Office (both 10 minutes’ drive). Further afield, hike up Skiddaw or Blencathra (both 15 minutes) for peerless views over Derwentwater and Scafell Pike. If you hit a rainy day, keep up with your exercise regime on the indoor facilities at Keswick Climbing Wall-Rookery Woods (five minutes), where you can also enrol in ghyll-scrambling jaunts when the weather clears. To soak up a bit of ancient local culture, check out the haunting, 5,000-year-old Castlerigg Stone Circle (five minutes), backed by fells and especially atmospheric at sunset. You can also learn about local industrial history at Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum (10 minutes), where you can tour a copper mine and take a vintage steam train ride on the narrow-gauge line running between Threlkeld and Keswick.
