  • Luxury glamping pods on the edge of the Lake District, Cumbria
  • Cockermouth five minutes’ drive; Bassenthwaite Lake 10 minutes
  • Fully equipped kitchenette; private hot tub; shooting and horse riding
The reluctant camper who dreads being away from their domestic comforts might appreciate the well-equipped pods at Wellington Farm Glamping Breaks, on the outskirts of Cockermouth (five minutes’ drive or a half-hour walk), in the Lake District. Complete with lighting and electrics, these luxury wood-clad accommodations sleeping up to four people are also fully insulated and heated, so you don’t need to worry about the Cumbrian winters. There are environmentally friendly toiletries in the ensuite bathroom (fluffy towels, dressing gowns and slippers are also supplied), and tea-making facilities in the kitchenette, which comes with a double electric hob, fridge freezer, microwave and toaster. Plus pots, pans and assorted utensils you might need to create culinary treats – which you can then devour in front of the smart TV while catching up on your favourite Netflix series or alfresco. Speaking of which, the private patio is a pretty glorious spot to while away a few hours, whether grilling some sausages on the barbecue (supplied) or having a restorative soak and a glass of bubbly in the hydrotherapy hot tub while taking in far-reaching views of the Western Fells. The farm produces its own Wellington Jersey lce Cream, which you can sample at the on-site café/tearoom, alongside home-baked cakes, sandwiches and burgers. Also on site are an equestrian centre, which arranges guided treks through the nearby villages and countryside, and an air rifle range.

Camping pod (deluxe)

Liked: The pod was spotlessly clean and beautifully presented. The little touches such as the biscuits, wine and dressing gowns made it feel like a spa retreat. The owners were friendly, helpful and gave advice on places to shop and eat. The views were stunning, waking up to see the hills and peacocks was breathtaking. The hot tub was the best I have ever used, better than some of the spas I have been too.

Disliked: Only improvement that could be made is maybe turn the heating up a tiny bit higher in October as I got a little chilly after 9.

Camping pod (deluxe)

Liked: We stayed for 4 nights and the only negative is we didn't have longer. From start to finish, Wellington Farm Glamping Breaks was fantastic. Staff were lovely, pods were clean, luxurious. The positioning, privacy and views were outstanding. Hot tubs were checked twice daily, and are top class. Site is peaceful and so close to the best part of the lakes. We will definately be booking here again, it's a real gem and credit to its owners. 10/10

Disliked: Not applicable at all

Local attractions

A trail follows the western shore of Bassenthwaite Lake (10 minutes’ drive), where salmon come to spawn – and ospreys to feed on the salmon. If birds are your thing, Dubwath Silver Meadows Nature Reserve (at the north western end of the lake) is home to geese and curlews, which you can spot from the Celtic-style hides. Red pandas, lemurs and capybaras are among the residents at Lake District Wildlife Park (15 minutes), where it’s possible to book experiences like a hawk walk, trekking with the alpacas or mindfulness sessions with the animals. You can also get up close and personal with tapirs and meerkats. Hiking enthusiasts have plenty of paths to choose from in the area, whether trails in Whinlatter Forest (20 minutes), where you might spy the occasional red squirrel up a tree; the Keswick-to-Threlkeld Railway Trail (20 minutes) or the 10-mile lakeside Derwentwater Walk (25 minutes).
