  • Scenic family-run farm site in the North York Moors National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Runswick Bay; 20 minutes from Whitby
  • Vending machine with pies, cakes and milkshakes
From setting sail from a local harbour and paddling down at the beach to riding steam trains and wandering round abbey ruins, you’ll be able to mix and match your activities around North Yorkshire’s countryside and coastline at Woodhill Camping. This family-run site is part of a working livestock and arable farm in the North York Moors National Park, 10 minutes’ drive away from Runswick Bay and 20 minutes from Whitby. The location here is a real selling point – as well as seaside jaunts, there are lots of lovely walking and cycling routes in the surrounding area. There are gorgeous views of the moors, hills and dales too… and yet it’s only about half a mile from the A171 for a convenient link to nearby attractions. And there's another selling point, in the form of the on-site vending machines. These are not your everyday vending machines, though… these ones can provide you with pies, milkshakes, cakes and fresh milk, plus hot drinks. There are also farm eggs and potatoes for sale (and you can get fizzy drinks and chocolate bars too if you want). Ice creams or seafood specialties on your brain? Well, this site is well positioned for more tasty local produce. Lealholm is five minutes’ drive away, with a café, pub and village shop (and some cute stepping stones) and there are several more pubs within 10 minutes’ drive of the site. On Friday and Saturday nights from 6pm to 9pm, grab your dinner back on site; takeaway pizzas are available. Dirty plates after all these eating escapades? There’s a covered washing-up area on site. Other facilities include toilets and showers.

What customers say

Popular, tranquil campsite in lovely countryside. Praised for spacious, level sites & owner Liz. Guests love the clean facilities, fresh milk/snack vending machines. Great value, ideal for coast/moor exploring. Many plan to return. Minor notes: occasional facility queues, wish for more showers.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Lovely, simple site in a quiet rural spot. Liz the owner is very friendly, helpful and accommodating. Excellent location for visiting nearby coastal sights. Lealholm just down the road is a very pretty little village. Loved the spacious pitches around the edge of the field and the set up which allowed us to watch the kids play in the middle. The vending machines (with milkshakes) and communal fridges were great extras.

Disliked Only very minor, but maybe could do with a couple of sinks separate to the toilets for teeth brushing.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We booked a last minute camping trip and we were so surprised with how great the facilities are here! We were expecting just to have toilets, but this campsite has allsorts! They had a place to order pizzas, fridge/freezers, washing up facilities, toilets & showers. They also had vending machines, milk/milkshake machine & hot drinks machine.

The facilities were all lovely and clean.

The campsite was nice and quiet with beautiful views.

We will definitely be back with our little girl.

Thank you so much for an enjoyable stay!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked This was our third visit to this lovely campsite. It's very peaceful - nobody blaring their music, just the sound of kids playing happily;-)

Showers and toilets kept clean. Love the vending machine and provision of fridge and freezer. Firepits available to hire and marshmallow toasting kits. Owner is a lovely lady

Oak bell tent (two person)

Liked I love this campsite Liz is lovely stayed here a few times over the years it's cheap cheerful one of the very few now what hasn't turned camping into a rip off. I won't lie I'm broke I enjoy camping as it makes holidaying affordable a lot of places charge the earth so I tend to go wild camping for a break from the everyday hamster wheel we call life. This place is like luxury to what I'm used to. It's basic but has everything I need and I always feel happy when I've been. I can't fault the place and theres milk and eggs on tap. The milk is delicious and proper not like supermarket trash. I'll be back before the seasons out
Would I recommend it.... no on the grounds that hidden gems like these get turned into hell holes once everyone knows about them.
Dislikes.... It's not available longer through the year

Local attractions

To the coast… Runswick Bay (10 minutes' drive) is a good place to start – this cute village has a scenic beach with space for swimming, fishing and crabbing, plus consistent waves for the surfers among you. Sandsend and Staithes are both 15 minutes’ drive away, or it's 20 minutes to Whitby, for the abbey ruins and the 199 Steps, plus boat trips and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Looking a little further afield, you could head along the coast a bit more to Scarborough (40 minutes) for a waterpark, Sea Life Centre and another steam railway, or turn inland to explore Malton (50 minutes), often described as Yorkshire’s food capital. For family days out, try the likes of Flamingo Land Resort (40 minutes), with a theme park and zoo, or Eden Camp Modern History Museum (50 minutes), bringing the history of World War II to life with exhibits in a former prisoner of war camp.
