  • Blakeney Point 15 minutes’ drive; Sandringham Estate 40 minutes
  • Woodland and meadow walks on site; beach 15 minutes’ drive
Convenient as a halfway base between Yorkshire and London, North Norfolk Camping and Glamping has accommodation options for hikers, large groups or families meeting up from all over the country, backpackers and couples intent on romantic getaways. At five minutes’ drive from the services of the Georgian town of Holt, the camping field is peaceful and quiet, but certainly not remote. It overlooks wildflower meadows and a peaceful lake surrounded by acres of woodlands just begging to be explored by family, pals and – as it’s very pet-friendly too – any accompanying dogs. Kids can paddle in the lake and run around building forts in the woods before gathering with family around a campfire in the evenings. There are North Norfolk beaches and nature reserves within 20 minutes’ drive, as well as long hikes along the Norfolk Coast Path. Facilities on site include firepits, firewood and campfires so you can rustle up a barbecue. If alfresco cooking is firmly off the agenda, head for the takeaways, pubs and restaurants in Holt – you can walk there in half an hour if you want to make a night of it.

Primitive grass tent campsite (small, four person)

Liked: Absolutely beautiful scenery of the lake, if you like your walks there is a nice walk nearby the campsite, called holt country park. Toilets and other necessities are well organised and clean. Communication from the owner is well informative and polite. Thank you for having us !

From the manager: Thank you Arijus for your brilliant review of our rural North Norfolk Campsite, we are so pleased that you enjoyed our natural lakeside views, there are walks straight from the site and Holt Country Park is not to be missed. Our back-to-basic facilities are perfect for wild campers, and our dog-friendly and campfire-friendly pitches are just what campers need to get back to nature. it was a pleasure to host you and we very much look forward to seeing you again very soon here with us in North Norfolk :)

Away from the crowds but pricey for what you get. Has unfinished feel.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: It’s definitely away from the crowds, only one other campervan there.

Disliked: It has an unfinished feel. It would really benefit from some signage and a simple site map. It’s an unmanned site and there are no signs anywhere to help you figure out what’s what (eg which taps are drinking water or where you can make a fire, which wood to use etc) or where to park/pitch. There is also no power/electricity anywhere on site, not even in the toilet block, so a headtorch is essential. There are many other sites that offer lit toilet blocks and EHUs for a lot less, so this felt v expensive for what you get. There’s also quite a lot of random piles of ‘stuff’ lying about that is unsightly. It’s a good spot and the basics are there…it just needs tidying up and finishing off to warrant the price tag. We foolishly paid extra for a pitch for a camper ‘with awning’ thinking it would ensure we got allocated a bigger pitch, but there are no marked pitches at all…just a couple of areas where you park anywhere, so it felt a swizz to have paid extra.

Primitive grass tent campsite (small, four person)

Liked: We had an amazing time at North Norfolk Camping. The host was ready to meet us when we arrived and showed us around the site. Our pitch was perfect! We had an amazing view of the lake and the entire 15 acres to ourselves! It's unfortunate to hear there are bad reviews for this site, we felt it had all the best parts of wild camping with facilities! The skies were clear and dark and we could hear owls in the distance. We had a really magical time and are looking forward to our next stay :)

It was a pleasure to host you and we very much look forward to seeing you here in eh Norfolk Countryside again very soon :)

Primitive grass campervan campsite (no awning)

Liked: Our hosts were lovely and very very helpful. All the facilities you need and really close to the beach and a well stocked shop with everything you might need. Even had a chicken pop in to say hello. Wonderful sunsets over the sea which is rare on the east coast.

Primitive grass tent campsite (large, four person)

Liked: Not much as was far below expectations

Disliked: Dreadful site - like a construction site and looked nothing like the pictures, All guests that weekend were very unhappy and the price was crazy for a site that had been thrown together that week...

From the manager: Thank you Paul for taking the time to leave a review, our site in Holt has been in the making for a while and has back-to-basic facilities that are great for campers who prefer a wilder experience. We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay and it is a shame that you would not return :(

Primitive grass tent campsite (large, four person)

Liked: The setting was really beautiful. Toilets were clean.

Disliked: No where to really camp, the grounds all too soft and Carol wouldn’t let us camp anywhere. Only one side of the lake is usable. And not even close to the lake. Space really for 4 family sized tents and a couple of campers. Chose to book a large pitch so we had more space as a family, cost over £160 for 2 nights for family of 4. Very expensive compared to other campsites. It’s half finished. Defo wouldn’t put any part of your body in the lake, as advertised. All the pics used to advertise the site are NOT of that campsite, expect one. Very very misleading. Poked my head in one of the bell tents available to hire, it was mouldy with a mouldy mattress. Also no firewood for sale as advertised. Really disappointing that was so misleading when I booked. Could be an awesome site but it’s not ready, or reduce the cost to be on par with other campsites. This is nothing special for the price. I didn’t even want to leave a review but no one replied to my email!

From the manager: Thank you Claire for taking the time to leave a review, our rural campsite surrounds natural ponds full of wildlife and offers camping and glamping to all, we are dog friendly and allow campfires, there is ample space for tents and vans and with the weather we have had this year the ground has been soft. Our Back to the wild campsite is suited more to those who want to camp without all the frills of holiday parks and to have peace and quiet. We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay and it is a shame that you would not return :(

Hikers primitive grass tent campsite (no cars, solo)

Liked: Great camping site! It was easy to find. The facilities were clean and the showers had hot water. There was a space to clean your dished. We also had acces to fresh drinkable water. The camping space had a great view onto the lakes in the middle. We came with a sports car and didn't had any problems driving on that country road even after a strong rain😊. The pitch was leveled and it was easy to set up the tents and securing them. There was barely any phone signal but that can be a good thing if you want to enjoy the nature. If you do really need it you only need to drive a couple of minutes to the nearest village The hosts were very friendly and we look forward to go back there

Primitive grass campervan campsite (no awning)

Liked: Site manager friendly and helpful. Understood why unable to stat

Disliked: Didn’t stay. Not suitable for motorhomes. No signage, need a grid reference then rough track to the site. No pitches marked and facilities poor. No refund forthcoming

Local attractions

Nature-lovers may get to spot owls and fallow deer in the woods around the campsite, and families can take binoculars to watch for rare bird species on nature walks in Holt Country Park (five minutes’ walk). For more animal sightings, visit the grey seal colonies at Weybourne or Blakeney Point (both 15 minutes’ drive) in autumn and winter. North Norfolk beaches include Sheringham (15 minutes) for rock pooling on its pebble beach, lively Hunstanton (45 minutes) with all its family amusements, and Wells-next-the-Sea (25 minutes), popular for its sandy beach backed by colourful beach huts. Victorian Cromer (20 minutes) is known for family entertainment on the pier and Banksy’s renowned ‘Great British Spraycation’. There’s culture by the bucketload too. Anyone with an interest in military history may like to take a turn around the weaponry and vehicles at Muckleburgh Military Collection (15 minutes). There are priceless antiques and artworks to be seen at Palladian-style Holkham Hall (half an hour), or you can pretend you’re royalty for the day with a nose around the palatial apartments at Sandringham Estate (40 minutes), and afterwards let the kids (and any dogs) have a run in the wooded parkland.
