Wrekin Forest Events Camping: View of foxes den, rabbit warren and badgers hollow

General

  • Off-grid, peaceful Shropshire woodland site within a Forest School
  • A 20-minute drive to Telford and 30 minutes away from Shrewsbury
  • Well-equipped kitchen, eco-friendly amenities, firepits and barbecues

Fancy swapping the sound of your smartphone pinging for the noise of birdsong? Then book in a trip at Wrekin Forest Events Camping, an off-grid site with a back to basics feel in lush Shropshire surrounds. This peaceful place also comes with handy essentials to help amp up a weekend in the woods, from fairy lights and festoon lamps to a barbecue, firepits and a well-equipped kitchen (although please note there's no fridge or freezer due to the off-grid nature of the site).

While a stay at this park’s all about getting lost in the forest (bring your pup along to help you sniff your way back...) or letting the kids loose on the large playing field (with swings, sandpit, football net, badminton and table tennis), ace activities and attractions are all around too. It’s a 20-minute drive to Telford from here for the landmark Iron Bridge as well as a kids’ park with heritage trails and an aerial rope course.

If educational times for the small fry are what you’re after, it's handy to note that the site is set in a Forest School with outdoorsy courses available for primary school pupils. It's 25 minutes from the Museum of the Gorge as well, one of 10 around town giving a glimpse at the history of the Industrial Revolution in this area where it all began. (If even more poking into the past appeals, Blists Hill Victorian Town is around the same distance with its recreated 19th-century village and staff dressed up in fancy period clothes… and should be a hit with those primary-aged pupils too.)

To nosey in nature instead, The Wrekin is a 25-minute drive from the park: putter to the hillfort’s 1,335-foot top and check out views over 17 of England’s counties or have picnics at the peak. And if you’d prefer to just hang out at your new home from home, plenty of space is available for outdoor games like croquet, swing ball and Jenga (all available to hire from the owners).

Please note

Please note that the shower facilities are unisex.

Facilities/activities including Forest School are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Please note that the toilet facilities are unisex.

This is a quiet park: no music is allowed.

The park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Breed-specific legislation (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Great place , basic shower and toilets but cleaned daily. Kitchen outside but with hot water also cleaning products available which was plus as I forgot to take it with me. Also if you will forget to take utensils don't worry as there some available as well to borrow😊. There is a play ground for smaller kids ,
Ping pong table and badminton net which we was using every day. Fire pit and bbq on each pot also wood log 1st day free but was enough for us for 2 days. I really recommend this place we had really good time and fun there.

Secluded pitches with BBQ, table and chairs and fire pit.

    Disliked:

Shower block had a rustic boiler set-up and would have benefited from more than one shower.

From the manager...

Hi, thank you for your review. Feedback is always useful.

Location...we are a little out in the sticks, loved by many, but perhaps too off-grid for some. We are less than 10 mins from Hoo Farm and several pubs and 15/20 mins from lots of other wonderful attractions including Shrewsbury, The Wrekin and Iron Bridge.

Value for money...we really try to be good value, so I am sorry you did not feel it was. We are certainly competitive with others in our area.

Accommodation...this was your own so I guess we can't solve that one entirely! Although you may wish for more provision from us? We provide table & chairs, fire-pit and BBQ.

Activities...we provide less that we have done in the past due to continuous and extensive vandalism. We now expect you to bring your own bats & balls, but have provided access to our forest school, a huge playing field, with a tree house, football net, swings, sandpit, boules pitch and badminton net.

Customer service...we are delighted you felt we did a good job...thank you.

Child friendliness...tricky, I can't just remember the age of your children, pitches are open to escape, we know for some they would prefer pitches to be more escape proof. Activities for children are really broad and we love families on our site.

Cleanliness....toilets and kitchen are spotless, we don't worry about cobwebs, its the spiders territory we are invading so we leave them be! Shower....this is actually a bonus as we did not have one until very recently. We advertise as being off-grid and back to basics, our shower is hot , powerful and clean and yes definitely rustic, just the way we designed it. To run a second would be too expensive and we would have to increase prices in order to do this.

Rabbit Warren will have new chairs next season and we intend to make it a little larger too, so we very much hope you will return and that you understand why there are gaps in your expectations.

Kind regards,
Judie & Anthony

Lovely forest site08/20/2022

We really like the relaxed atmosphere and the generous pitch sizes. There's a small play park on site with swings, a climbing frame and a slide, our kids spent plenty of time there and it was close enough to the pitches to let them go off unaccompanied.

There are decent washing-up facilities and a small kitchen stocked with most things you'll need to cook with, in case you've forgotten anything.

Each pitch is provided with a BBQ and a communal BBQ and firepit in the middle of the site.

The shower is good, although there's only 1 so there were sometimes queues.

The owners are very attentive, but not intrusive. It was nice to see them walking around a couple of times a day.

    Disliked:

Not a lot to dislike at all. If I were being picky, I'd say the pitches are too close to each other but that's quite minor.

Not a "dislike" but something some people might care about; there's no WIFI and the phone signal was awful. We really didn't mind, but some might.

Again, not a dislike for us, but you can't park your car next to your pitch. There's a car park at the entrance. We were in one of the furthest pitches and it took less than a minute to walk to the car.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for taking the time to review your stay.

So glad you enjoyed your stay with us.
Pitches too close is a tricky one, it used to be a free for all, Covid caused us to reduce capacity and rope off pitches, pitches are therefore so much bigger. We like this look and have therefore kept it. As there are only eight pitches on this field it is never over crowded. We will have a look over winter to see if we can widen any pitches and make an pathway or two to give a little more gapping.

We absolutely advertise as being off-grid.....NO WIFI, NO PHONE SIGNAL! So please if you are reading this review take note, there is signal at forest school, but there is non of the above on the campsite!

The removing of cars to the car park came about as we got truly fed-up of people playing music from there cars onsite or their children running engines in order to charge devices. This is very much contrary to our ethos. I hope you understand our reasoning for this rule.

We very much hope you visit again.

Kind regards,
Judie & Anthony

Local attractions

In Shropshire with the intent of shuffling about in the lush landscape? Drive to Ironbridge first off (half an hour away) and steel yourself for a 139-mile stroll on the Shropshire Way.

Alternatively, if that sounds a little lengthy for your liking, Much Wenlock is around the same distance and leads to the 19-mile limestone ridge of Wenlock Edge (and fun fact: it was formerly a tropical coral reef aeons ago when this area was under the sea).

If this gets you craving some water-based whiling, take a stroll over to a Much Wenlock activity centre for canoeing, kayaking and rafting on the River Severn, plus quad biking and clay pigeon shooting on land. Boldings Pools (30 minutes) meanwhile is your go-to if angling for carp, bream and roach sounds like a grand day out...
