Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite: Numbered pitches

General

  • Well-maintained pub site for guests 14 years and over
  • In Stanton by Dale; 20 minutes' drive from Attenborough Nature Centre
  • Real ale and pub food served; 20 minutes' walk from a golf club

Dart off to Derbyshire and make for Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite in Stanton by Dale, a well-kept site attached to an award-winning pub. The name of this spot is a nod to Stanton's industrial heritage – if the village rings a bell, it may well be because 'Stanton' crops up on many a manhole cover across the UK.

Nowadays, things are peaceful around here, and the site is set between traditional red brick houses and a small village green. The Chequers Inn is over 200 years old and still in fine fettle – its selling point remains its focus on real ales and proper home-cooked food. The pub, like the site, is mightily dog-friendly, so don't hesitate to bring four-legged friends along on your trip.

The pitches here are level, well-drained and conveniently located to the rear of the pub. Although it's close to the M1, off-site strolls are unlikely to involve busy roads and traffic – Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite is a few minutes' walk from footpaths that'll take you through the pleasant fields and hills that make up the local landscape.

The nearest supermarket can be found in Sandiacre (five minutes' drive); Ilkeston (10 minutes) has a wider range of shops and takeaways.

Please note that kids under the age of 14 aren't allowed to stay at Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite.

Please note

This park has no on-site shower facilities.

Guests under the age of 14 are not allowed on site.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The bar is open between 01/01 and 12/31.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

The park caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

What a lovely little hidden gem. A well laid out level site at the rear of the pub. We had booked a meal and were not dissapointed. The pub has a lovely atmosphere and we were made to feel welcome by both the locals and the hosts. We had a wonderful evening followed by a walk in the morning with Ken the Harris Hawk, which made my weekend! If you have a dog, there are field walks right on the doorstep. We really enjoyed our stay and can highly recommend this site. We hope to return soon.

This site was a truly delightful find.
Set in a beautiful village, the site was tucked away behind The Chequers pub, easily accessed by a well maintained road. 5 very ample pitches, immaculately serviced with a grass picnic area and table on each pitch and easy access to services such as water and a chemical loo. The size of the pitches made them feel very private. The toilet facilities are excellent and very clean and warm, they are accessed at the back of the pub, available 24 hours. WiFi is available at the pub, although it didn’t reach our motorhome it wasn’t a problem for us.

Leading into the site were two gates, locked at night ( each visitor is given a key) which made the place very safe and secure.

The pub attached is very friendly, lovely Landlady who was so helpful and welcoming. On arrival we were greeted and shown to our pitch and handed a visitor pack containing information on local services and attractions together with details of local takeaways. We had a takeaway from the local Chinese restaurant and were invited to eat it in the pub if we wanted to; the meal was gorgeous and delivered to our door. If the other takeout services are as good you won’t be disappointed.

Bear in mind that the site doesn’t allow children under 14 years of age. As a mature couple this did not pose a problem to us.

The pub is dog friendly which is great for us travelling with our two small dogs. Oh … and the pub food, superb! The regulars are clearly used to visitors staying and are friendly too and the bar staff are very knowledgeable about the area and so obliging.

We paid £25 per night for two people and there was no extra charge for the dogs. We felt this was very reasonable for the location as the site really does feel like a luxury site.

The place itself, Stanton by Dale, is surrounded by beautiful countryside and there are walks aplenty. Erewash Valley Golf Course is on the outskirts of the village and provides walking and golf. In addition a beautiful tearoom and deli is nestled in the village, try the cream tea! Another pub, The Stanhope Arms provides an alternative eatery and watering hole. Don’t forget to have a walk around the village too with its lovely buildings, some very old and quirky.

We were visiting relatives in nearby Nottingham and the train into Notts, at Long Eaton, was a stones throw away. If you prefer there is a local taxi company, both are ideal if you don’t want to have to up sticks with a van and all the trappings.

This site has joined the “must go again” section in our travel book and in fact we hope up return at the end of the month.

If you’re looking for a friendly, well serviced site set in beautiful countryside with lots of walking, amenities and local attractions this place is a must.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike, but just to bear in mind, there are no shower facilities at the site. Not a problem for us as we used our own facilities.

Local attractions

Do a round of the greens at Erewash Valley Golf Club (20 minutes' walk), a well-kept local club with fab tree-lined fairways that's easily accessible on foot. Other outdoor pursuits around here include fishing, with the nearest angling spot about five minutes' drive away, and birdwatching – Attenborough Nature Centre (20 minutes) may be named after the nearby village rather than the TV presenter, but it's still a prime pick for a spot of ornithology.

Nottingham city centre (20 minutes) is next up, for a castle, shopping centres and the interactive National Justice Museum. (Rather not drive around town? Pull up to one of the city's park and rides and take the tram instead.) On the outskirts of Nottingham is Wollaton Hall (20 minutes), an Elizabethan country house with a deer park and formal gardens. (Remember Batman's mansion in The Dark Knight Rises? Yep, that was filmed here.)

Heading towards the Peak District National Park (from 45 minutes) is also on the cards, whether you opt for Derbyshire dalliances in the grounds of Chatsworth House (an hour) or old-time amusements and riverside walks in Matlock Bath (45 minutes).

Must see

  • Wollaton Hall and Park (4.2 miles)
  • Nottingham Castle (6.6 miles)
  • Castle Donington Museum (6.7 miles)
