  • Peaceful family-friendly spot in the Peak District National Park
  • Hiking, rock climbing, potholing and caving within 30 minutes
  • A 45-minute drive from the rides and rollercoasters at Alton Towers
Stunning countryside, spectacular views and a whole lot of get-up-and-go… If that ticks everything off your getaway bucket list, make tracks for Newhaven Holiday Park, a family-friendly site in the tiny hamlet of Newhaven 20 minutes’ drive from Derbyshire's Buxton. Inside the Peak District National Park, Newhaven is a top spot for energetic types: the High Peak trail passes less than a mile from the site, and you can pick up the Tissington Trail at nearby Hartington Station (or start from Ashbourne, 20 minutes away, to do the whole thing). If you’re of an even more active persuasion – with a daredevil streak perhaps – there’s rock climbing, potholing and caving half an hour away in the High Peak area of the park. You don’t have to go clambering over hills and dales to get a good look at the Peak District though: this site is in a secluded spot, with views over the countryside and plenty of trees and shrubs for shelter. Kick back and relax among all the greenery while the kids run riot in the playground. Ready for something to munch? For anything more substantial, pull a chair up to the table at one of the many restaurants within 20 minutes of Newhaven.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Convenience of booking in and being able to choose pitch. Location.

Disliked: Unfortunately the toilet cleanliness was a disappointment this time. On arrival, Sat morning, the toilet block was being cleaned so all was great. However, they do not appear to have been cleaned Sunday meaning that the floors and the toilets were dirty and smelling and cubicles were left without toilet rolls for many hours. By Sunday evening there was no toilet rolls at all. The showers are hot but unfortunately only stay on for 5/6 seconds meaning you have to constantly push or hold the button which is tricky when washing and rinsing hair. All disappointing as when stayed in 2023 all was good.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked: Location was great we like to go walking and it was only 15min drive to the walks that we wanted which was solomans temple and dovedale. Good campsite for children we could see them from our tent playing in the park which meant we could relax.

Disliked: Our tent was pitched on an 8 degree incline which was not comfortable to sleep, cook or do anything in our tent.

The toilet block was not cleaned for the duration of our stay which was a shame as they are nice modern toilets and there seemed to have a sewage problem as the smell was terrible. By our 3rd day there was no soap or toilet roll either.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: A nice quiet site with a well-maintained children's play area and plenty of space for us to set up our tent.

Disliked: The toilet blocks ran out of toilet paper and it wasn't replaced. They started clean and gradually got dirtier over the course of the weekend, so I'd suggest they weren't being checked / cleaned daily.

Some road noise starting quite early in the morning.

We got a nice level (unpowered grass) pitch, but our friends had a powered grass pitch which was extremely sloped and uneven.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Close to Matlock bath and Buxton for days out with the kids. Nice quiet site. Shop was okay, staff were friendly.

Disliked: Toilets clearly had a drainage issue with women’s toilets door being propped open. No attended to clean or re-stock the toilets the whole bank holiday weekend. By Sunday there was no hand soap or toilet roll. Plus the fact they hadn’t been cleaned for the 4 days we were there. Claimed to have WiFi but didn’t reach where we were staying but not a major issue.

Liked: Great stay. Staff were extremely friendly and the facilities were well kept. Just had issues finding the water tap so had to ask staff in the sales office to fill up our bottles. It seems we weren't the only people who had this issue. Perfect location, close to Bakewell and some great trails

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The facilities were clean and plenty of them. Staff were friendly on check in. Nice location for good walks.

Disliked: The ground is too stoney to properly pitch a tent, lots of stones/ hard layer 2 inches below grass which made it challenging to pitch. Had to bend pegs over to secure it. Was fine for the mild weather we had but in high winds it would have been more of a concern

Local attractions

This is Austen country, so you can barely turn around without tripping over some stately pile of bricks... If you fancy gliding around as if you own the place, adopt an air of wealth and superiority and head to Kedleston Hall, Sudbury Hall (with its Museum of Childhood), Hardwick Hall, Chatsworth House and The Old Manor, all within roughly half an hour’s drive of Newhaven, then chauffeur yourself over to Melbourne Hall, just under an hour away. Hols with kids are pretty easy in these parts too, as there’s absolutely oodles to distract them with within an hour of the site: make your way to Matlock for the Heights of Abraham alpine cable car and Gulliver’s Kingdom theme park (and the Crich Tramway Museum, Peak District Mining Museum and Masson Mills for some grownup sanity). Also get along to Buxton for treetop adventuring at Go Ape; underground exploration at Poole’s Cavern, and Alton Towers for some adrenaline-fuelled rides. If traipsing around on land isn’t really floating your boat, spend a day (or two) at Carsington Water, less than half an hour away, for sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, powerboating and fishing, or head to WaterWorld (just outside Stoke-on-Trent) for some indoor waterpark splashing around.
