  • Quiet grass pitches on a working farm in the Chiltern Hills
  • A five-minute drive to Whipsnade Zoo; walk out to Dunstable Downs
  • Alpacas and sheep on site; pubs within easy walking distance
Farm sites are fab places to stay for family holidays – and the location of New Green End Farm, in the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty between the villages of Kensworth and Whipsnade, is a particularly excellent one. And why would that be? Well, this Bedfordshire location is just a couple of miles from Whipsnade Zoo, meaning that you can walk there in half an hour or so, or maximise your time among the animals by driving there in five minutes. You can stroll straight out into the Dunstable Downs too, and there are a couple of pubs within walking distance for post-outing meals and drinks. If that's not enough walking yet, spend some time wandering around the farm as well – there are miles of pathway to wander along at this working farm, and lots of animals to spot along the way (including sheep and alpacas). That large open space makes for a mighty peaceful place to stay as well, and the grass pitches have been kept on the simple side to make the most of that rural atmosphere. They’re set well back from the main road and surrounded by woodland and open fields, with access to toilets, showers and a washing-up area, plus recycling facilities to keep the place nice and clean. Barbecues and campfires are permitted for that classic outdoor evening vibe, and dogs are welcome to join you on site here. There are a few village stores and farm shops scattered around the vicinity, but for major supplies your best bet is Dunstable, which is five minutes' drive away and home to a couple of large supermarkets.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The site is well laid out, communication was good, facilities were good and the pitch sizes were ample. Toilets were clean and tidy. There was also a separate area to wash up plates.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Very relaxed atmosphere, free choice of which pitch to use. Nice and quiet with a very rural feel. Facilities cleaned regularly and all functioning fine. Two excellent pubs within easy walking distance. Good base for walks around the Downs. Everyone very friendly and helpful.

Disliked: Would have liked the grass to be shorter. Need another ladies toilet.

From the manager: Hi thanks for you feedback, glad you enjoyed your stay with us. We will increase the grass cutting next season and we will be adding extra toilets for the laddies, hope to see you again.

Powered grass RV campsite

Liked: Good location, spacious large pitches, close to local village pub. Loved the "outside feel" eco style showers.

Disliked: Sadly the day we stayed was very wet, so the long grass was sodden, would have been better if grass was cut short so walking etc would be much easier. Toilet facilities - great for men, not so for Women. The men had 2 cubicles and 2 urinals, my partner advised that the Ladies only had 1 cubicle, nowhere near enough.

From the manager: Thanks for the review, we aim to keep on improving for next season so your comments are really helpful, grass cutting and extra facilities for the laddies is now on our list, see you again soon.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The location of the site was great as it was 5 minutes' drive from Whipsnade zoo which was the whole reason for our stay here, but it also had a really quirky pub with food 10 minutes walk down the road. Although we didn't get the chance due to our time of arrival, and waiting for the rain to bait before we pitched up, it also seemed really close to a few good walks and points of interest that we would have visited if we had the time. The site itself felt nice and secure as it had a main gate to enter/exit and being lined with trees and bushes it was closed off from the outside world which made it very peaceful. The field was massive and the pitches were a good size so there was plenty of room on site for the children and dogs to play without imposing on others.

Disliked: The toilet block only had 1 female toilet/sink and the water faucet outside had a dodgy tap so it blasted out and ended up making the area in front of the block waterlogged

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: thanks for your feedback, next season we are installing extra toilets and we will be gravelling a much wider area in front of the facilities as this area became very wet due to the heavy rain, hope to see you next season.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: quiet,large pitches

Disliked: toilet facilities…need more toilets and cleaning a bit more frequently also would be good if grass had been cut a bit shorter as due to weather it was quite damp making the toilet facilities really muddy and quite dirty no signs for where the animals were

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Near Whipsnade Zoo - that is all !

Disliked: We booked this campsite as its description stated animals (alpacas and sheeps to meet onsite ). It was my daughter’s birthday and her favourite animal being alpacas we chose this site over so many others due this particular reason . Well the description and first photo on Pitch up is not accurate and actually very misleading , after 2 phone calls with the owner , a text message and 1 hour walking to find the animals including by a busy road we were informed that the animals can actually be anywhere across the farm 76 acres . I had a very sad and disappointed child in her birthday and the owner was informed of this but made no effort at all to meet us and bring us to where the animals were - he couldn’t care less, obviously, and therefore this review , we tried to communicate the issue directly but we were dismissed and you really upset our child in her birthday . 1 ladies cubicle only , and 2 for the men with 2 urinaries. Not only the ladies was often occupied but toilets was very dirty for the majority of time . Actually , we never saw a cleaner on site during our 3 nights stay . It was filthy , we used public toilets facilities in places we were visiting such as the zoo. It is just a field , with the disgusting toilet facilities you are better doing wild camping ….if you book this campsite for the animals , find somewhere else , you will be lucky if you find them .

From the manager: Thank you for your review, we're sorry your experience didn't meet your expectations. As a new pop up site, we do value all feedback as this will help us improve for the future. For example, we have reviewed the wording on the front of the camping advert and asked Pitchup to amend the title lines so they match the further details; there are animals to see on walks, not to meet, as they are farm animals and not pets. We apologise for the confusion this caused and thank you for bringing it to our attention. However, we do feel the remainder of your review requires a fuller response. We spoke to you about directions several times towards the animals and then later replied to your text message about the animals to explain the mix-up. It would not have been suitable to bring you or your children to the animals as they're farm animals and not pets. As you had both numbers for the campsite owners, we assumed you had no further wish to discuss this. Your issue was not dismissed, it was responded to within minutes of receiving your text and no further communication was received after responding. You have said the facilities were "filthy" and you didn't see a cleaner, however when you arrived on-site on Friday evening the toilets were in the process of being cleaned and they were cleaned a further two times on Saturday and two times on Sunday. Due to the torrential rain on Friday and Saturday day time there was some mud on the floors, which is to be expected from a campsite in a field. You have said the campsite is "just a field" however it is in fact; a field. We're a working farm, diversifying for our first year in one of the wettest summers on record. We would like to think that we have done our utmost to meet our visitors expectations in customer service and cleanliness but clearly you feel we fell short. We do feel your review is unnecessarily critical and negative due to your disappointment about the availability of animals, as you have marked down every aspect of the site as a result. Whilst we have some sympathy that the experience was not what you expected, it is a shame you feel the need to address this through a public review of a pop-up site. Wishing you the very best in your future camping endeavours to find a site that meets your requirements.

Local attractions

Whipsnade Zoo (five minutes' drive) is the big draw around here, of course – this offshoot of the Zoological Society of London is home to more than 10,000 animals from around the world, and it’s also got several play areas and a steam railway. To spend more time in the open air, you may like to stroll through the National Trust’s Dunstable Downs estate (25 minutes’ walk), walk through the Whipsnade Tree Cathedral (20 minutes) or pick any one of the scenic trails running through the chalk landscapes of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Golfers may like to get out onto the greens at Dunstable Downs Golf Club (three minutes’ drive) or Whipsnade Park Golf Club (10 minutes). A little further afield, there’s go-karting, indoor snow sports and the National Museum of Computing up in Milton Keynes (half an hour), a castle in Berkhamsted and a steam railway in Buzzard (both 20 minutes). For a special day out, it's a half-hour drive to the Harry Potter Studio Tour.
