  • Peaceful RV park on the outskirts of the Black Hills of South Dakota
  • Rapid City 10 minutes’ drive; Deadwood and Mount Rushmore 40 minutes
  • Play area and dog park; views of the Black Hills; stargazing
Fans of the TV series ‘Deadwood’, please form an orderly queue as you head to Black Hawk Creek RV Park, a family-friendly spot a 40-minute drive from the city that inspired the classic HBO western. And Black Hawk Creek is not just convenient for Deadwood – you can also reach Rapid City within a 10-minute drive; in addition, the RV park’s location on the western fringes of the Black Hills National Forest means epic hiking (or horse-riding) expeditions on trails that were likely beaten by the likes of Calamity Jane and Wyatt Earp. You’re in South Dakota here – and reminders of the Old West are everywhere. The site, which operates year-round, is set in a remote, peaceful oasis that abuts rocky cliffs, close to the meandering Boxelder Creek – maybe in the olden days, hopeful prospectors stood where you can stand now angling for trout. A barbecue is provided for anything you catch. If you come up empty-handed, there are a couple of stores in nearby Black Hawk, just across the I-90 (five minutes’ drive), along with a few restaurants and bars. The site has a play area, a dog park where you can let your four-legged friend run free (you must keep it on a lead on site), and a toilet block. And beyond those welcome amenities, it has low levels of light pollution and a huge canopy of stars at night. Perfect for feeling like you’ve gone back to the days when Deadwood was just a dusty frontier town…

Local attractions

Take a walk down Main Street in Deadwood, popping in and out of saloons, casinos and maybe the Brothel Deadwood, a museum exploring the history of prostitution in the city. On the edge of Deadwood, Tatanka Story of Bison is home to a monumental bronze statue portraying a bison hunt. Completed in 1941, Mount Rushmore National Memorial in Keystone (40 minutes’ drive) depicts four influential American presidents – Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln – carved into the granite. From Mount Rushmore Profile View you get a good picture of Washington’s face, but you can also walk (or drive) around, looking for alternative viewpoints. Wildlife in the Black Hills National Forest (one hour) includes coyotes, elk and American bison. Birdwatchers have lots to look forward too, with golden and bald eagles often soaring above the area’s grasslands and canyons.
