  • Large family campsite on the shores of Lake Maggiore
  • Locarno 10 minutes’ drive; 15 minutes to Ascona
  • Pool, sports courts, exercise classes, wellness area and restaurants
It’s a pretty picture indeed at Campofelice Camping Village, with its spectacular setting sandwiched between Lake Maggiore and the foothills of the Alps. At five minutes’ drive from Tenero in the Swiss canton of Ticino, this family-friendly site has plenty to keep families happy – not least a long stretch of private beach overlooked by the grass pitches. Active families won’t find time to sit still on site, what with dividing their time between the swimming pool, beach volleyball court and football field. You can play bocce, do circuits of the BMX track and keep up your fitness regime in the gym… If you prefer, jog along the lakefront promenade, challenge the kids to a game of miniature golf, play a game of tennis, join in aerobics and Pilates classes… If that all sounds too exhausting, you can of course choose to lounge on the sun deck, grab a cocktail from the pool bar or pamper yourself with a massage in the wellness zone. Whatever the preferred style of your lakeside holiday, it should be fairly hassle free. Any sports equipment you need can be hired from reception, and the on-site supermarket takes care of foodie requirements. When you’re too chilled to think about cooking, take breakfast in the bistro, keep the kids happy all day long with a supply of ice creams from the kiosks, and in the evening dine in the chic restaurant with a terrace looking across the lake.

Fully-serviced concrete and grass site

Liked: What an amazing campsite. Everyone was so friendly, clean and there was so much to do. Loved the plus of having a free bus into town, a great bonus. We had a pitch right on the lake and it was beautiful. Our 2 year old was entertained throughout our stay and we loved that the road on site was very quiet so she could safely scooter around.

Disliked: We couldn’t get the WiFi to work but it didn’t bother us too much as we were happy to have device free days!

Powered concrete and grass site

Liked: Very well maintained site (clean and regular gardening) with really friendly staff. All facilities cleaned and well stocked all the time. Amazing views around the whole site. A little gym with views overlooking the balcony and swimming pool looking out to the mountains. We used the sauna and steam room which again was lovely and clean and free!! We rented out the electric car which was so easy to do and very cheap, only 79chf!! Staff were very friendly and helpful even with us only speaking English. The shop was always well stocked and reasonably priced. Water refill stations everywhere which made things alot easier. A lovely little cafe with a stunning view of the lake, again staff very friendly with helping us when trying to order food. The "beach" was stunning with water activities in the lake, and showers which had great pressure!! There was also a little shop on the beach that supplied drinks and snacks. You could use your entry band to pay for items which made things alot easier. Overall an amazing experience for our first time out of the UK.

Disliked: Shop closing during busy lunch times. Pool not opening until midday and closing at 6.

Local attractions

Campofelice Camping Village is the gateway to the stunning alpine valleys of Ticino. Start your Swiss adventure gently with a refreshing dip in the pristine mountain waters of the spectacular Verzasca Valley (20 minutes’ drive). If you’re feeling brave, go canyoning in the white waters of Valle Maggia (half an hour) or try a tandem paragliding flight from the peak of Cardada Cimetta (20 minutes) to see Lake Maggiore and the Brissago Islands spread out below. When you’ve seen them from above, take a cruise boat out to the Brissago Islands from Porto Ronco (15 minutes) to have a wander among subtropical gardens. There are pretty Ticino towns to get to know too. Upmarket Ascona (15 minutes) has a colourful Old Town packed with indie shops, a couple of modern art museums and a host of waterside restaurants for sunset dining. In elegant Locarno (10 minutes), take the funicular up to the Baroque-era church of Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso Piazza Grande, admire the ancient Roman glassware in the museum at Castello Visconteo and then relax in a pavement café on stately Piazza Grande.
