Fancy trying out a camping break in the Cantabria countryside – but with no need to bring or construct a tent? Kampaoh Santillana del Mar has the answer for you in its smart and spacious safari tents, which are all set up and ready for guests to move in for a fuss-free rural break. Book a break here and you’ll be staying in a comfortable and sturdy tent that’s been furnished with beds (and bed linen), chairs, a hanging rail and rugs to keep things comfortable underfoot. You’ll also have access to shared facilities including picnic areas, a mini market, a restaurant and a launderette as well as bathrooms with showers and toilets. The glamping tents, tucked away among the trees to keep things cool in summer, are part of a large campsite that’s got plenty of space to relax in sunny and shaded areas. You may like to spend a fair amount of time hanging about in one of the hammocks provided, taking swims at the open-air pool or upping the activity levels with games of tennis and miniature golf. There’s also a playground where the kids can have a good run around. The surroundings here are all greenery and woods, but in fact you won’t be cut off from urban amenities as the town of Santillana del Mar is about 10 minutes’ walk away for shops, places to eat and bus stops. If you’d rather keep things thoroughly rural, there are plenty of trails around for walks and bike rides – and you may like to know that the coast is only about 10 minutes’ drive away too.

Local attractions

There are walking and cycling routes all around this site to give you a taste of the local landscapes – and at some point you should definitely take a walk into Santillana del Mar, your local town. That 10-minute stroll will get you to a lovely little town with a medieval centre, an impressive Romanesque church and the somewhat gory Museum of Torture - Inquisicion. This area is also known for its lengthy history, as you’ll learn on a visit to the Altamira Caves (five minutes’ drive), famed for its paleolithic paintings. Meanwhile, for life that is very much alive and well, you can take a trip to the Cabárceno Nature Park (half an hour), where animals from around the world (most of them threatened with extinction) are brought together at a 1850-acre park. A trip to the Cantabria coast may well be on your schedule as well – a drive of 10 minutes or so will get you either to sheltered coves like Playa de Tagle or to coastal hikes around places like Puerto Calderon.
