  • Family-friendly riverside campsite in the Upper Savinja Valley
  • Golte Ski Resort half an hour’s drive; Velenje Lake 25 minutes
  • Watersports lake and adrenaline park; wellness centre; restaurant
A family-run campsite anchored around its own watersports lake, adrenaline park and wellness centre, riverside Camp Menina sits in Slovenia’s spectacular Upper Savinja Valley. Far removed from busy roads and everyday noise, all the grass pitches are shaded by tall trees, have electric hook-ups and are close to water points. If you’re looking for active holidays with family or friends, this place is absolutely meant for you. Zipwires through the treetops, rafting, kayaking and bellyaking (a kind of cross between kayaking and bodyboarding), canyoning or fishing on the Savinja river, paddleboarding or swimming at the lake, mini golf… Archery sessions, cycling and paragliding… you can try them all either on site or locally in the Upper Savinja Valley. Of course, everyone’ idea of a holiday is different and if your notion of heaven is a good read on the lakeside beach, followed by a cleansing sauna or massage, then that’s all on tap too. As far as catering goes, you have several options. Stay put on your shaded pitch and spark up a barbecue – please only light a campfire on stainless steel plates, which you can borrow from reception – bag a pizza takeaway at the weekend or order regional dishes and Slovenian wines at Menina restaurant, which has views over the lake from its terrace. Hankering after a sweet treat during the day? The kids will be the first to tell you that there’s a pastry shop right next to the playground, where you can pick up a tempting supply of pancakes, strudels and ice creams.

Local attractions

Visiting in winter? Get out on the slopes at Golte Ski Resort (half an hour’s drive), where novices can take lessons on gentle pistes while experts whizz down pine-lined runs. In summer, Golte morphs into a hub for hiking and cycling on alpine trails, or you can head up to Lake Trije Ploti (15 minutes’ walk) to go paddleboarding or swimming in pristine mountain water. For more dramatic mountain scenery, venture into the Logar Valley Landscape Park (half an hour’s drive) to hike up to the stunning Rinka Falls, see snow-capped summits from a glider or cycle strenuously steep trails. Elsewhere, launch a flat-bottomed ‘pletna’ boat onto Velenje Lake (25 minutes), or for less demanding pursuits on sunny days, hunker down for a few leisurely hours on the beach. To squeeze some local culture into your Slovenian holiday, marvel at the colourful baroque-era interior of Gornji Grad Cathedral (15 minutes), learn about local industry by touring a former pit at the Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia (25 minutes) or stop off at hilltop Celje Castle (40 minutes) to see the summer sound-and-light show against a backdrop of mountain peaks.
