You know you’ve hit a sweet spot when your hosts describe themselves as ‘Camp Mum and Dad’… and that’s exactly the role owners Nathan and Shanti have taken on at Tatapouri by the Sea, making sure they give a truly warm welcome to everyone that comes to stay at this gorgeous Gisborne seaside spot. And gorgeous it really is… right on the oceanfront, with direct access to the beach and a backdrop of green hills it’s a spectacular place in which to settle down for a few days of seaside relaxation. The city of Gisborne is about 15 minutes’ drive away, and there are plenty of beaches, wineries and other attractions to explore around the area – but then again, you may well find yourselves spending rather a lot of time simply chilling out at the park during your stay here. And if you do choose to take that option, surely no one would blame you – you’ll get to watch the world’s first sunrise before spending the day simply soaking up the seaside atmosphere, perhaps dropping into the café from time to time to refuel with locally roasted coffee or real fruit ice creams. Nathan and Shanti have built this place up into something special since moving here in April 2019, and they’ve also been able to install plenty of useful amenities for guests, including a playground to keep the kids busy, a dog park where your four-legged friends can run about, and a launderette and bathrooms to help keep everyone and everything clean.

Local attractions

The Gisborne area is perhaps best known as a food and wine hotspot – and there are plenty of places around here where you can sample some of the area’s bounty. Bushmere Estate (25 minutes’ drive) and Matawhero Wines (half an hour) are among the best-rated wineries to visit, with Sunshine Brewery (15 minutes) providing tours for those of you that prefer a beer or two. Meanwhile, your knowledgeable hosts can provide all the insider info about local restaurants. And you may also have noticed that the coastline is pretty stunning here, with several stunning beaches and cliff views to visit within a few minutes’ drive. If you’d like to throw a bit more activity into your seaside days, you can sign up for surf lessons in Gisborne (15 minutes) or just head next door to Dive Tatapouri to organise boat tours and stingray experiences. It’s not all about the coast, though, so it’s worth planning a trip inland at least once – a real highlight being the Rere Rock Slide Waterfall (an hour), where you can slide down the falls on a rubber tube or boogie board if you’re feeling adventurous.
