  • Peaceful dog-friendly site on a river bank in the Loire Valley
  • A 15-minute drive from Saumar and surrounded by vineyards
  • Fishing and birdwatching on the river; hikes and bike rides nearby
The first thing to say about Camping Le Thouet, in the lovely Loire Valley, it is that it’s mightily peaceful. After all, a spot surrounded by the gorgeous French countryside and the vineyards and the châteaux of the Loire Valley generally does lend itself rather well to peace and quiet. This particular place is also on the river bank, so fishing and birdwatching can provide hours upon hours of idle entertainment… Spare some time for the pool, too. After lounging poolside or in the shade of the site’s towering trees, your next pitstop could be the on-site bar and restaurant. On the menu is local, fresh and international cuisine made by Nadia, along with fine French wines (from the surrounding vineyards, of course). You’ll want to time sipping on fine wines cleverly around adventurous activities. The nearby river is just the spot for kayaking, canoeing, fishing and birdwatching (or riverside picnics if you’re more inclined to spend your days lazily). Vineyard trails and hikes or bike rides through the countryside are, of course, another wise way to explore. Saumur, with its medieval castle, its tank museum, pretty riverside and equestrian shows, is just 15 minutes’ drive away from Camping Le Thouet. There, and in other gorgeous nearby towns, you should find plenty of places to indulge in a little fine dining.

Powered grass and gravel site

Liked: Friendly proprietor and hot water! We used this campsite for one night only in November as a stopover through France. The owner was lovely and accommodating, spoke excellent English and made us very welcome on a dark evening. Wish we could have spent longer there and in daylight as it appeared to be in vineyard territory and it could have been splendid.

Liked: Roomy, and Quiet. Flat pitches

Disliked: The booking was made after searching several places, on the grounds that the pool, bar and restaurant where open. Everything was shut! The 1 shower was broken and unuseable. Out of 5 toilets only one was open for use with a broken door lock. We were extremely disappointed on our first ever holiday in a motorhome and first holiday for many years. The owners should be ashamed to have such a disappointing business.

Powered grass and gravel site

Liked: Absolutely nothing.Left the site with staying it was an absolute disgrace and you should be ashamed of your selves as an organisation promoting such a venue.

Disliked: Hello I am emailing you about a campsite that we had booked for 6 nights through you this summer - Camping Le Thouet, Montreuil Bellay, France. I have taken photographs, one of which suggests ACSI Inspection. We arrived at the site at 3pm only to find no staff, a chaotic reception and what looked to be a derelict site. Photos of ‘the play area’, the activities ‘marquee’ and a recreational area are enclosed. The amount of broken outdoor furniture was staggering and the general unkemptness was worrying. We had a look around, rang the bell several times, shouted etc and still nobody came. We then looked at the toilet shower block, not only was it inadequate and woeful, it was an environmental health hazard. We left the site! We are concerned that this site is displaying an ACSI inspection notice - this is on their very misleading and outdated website. We contacted the site as we were leaving the area and the owner said she had ‘gone inside’ as it was raining; it wasn’t. We booked the site and paid for it through PitchUp.com and have of course contacted them. We would like to have our payment refunded and if there is anything you can do to help us with this, we would be grateful. We are also contacting the local authority in the area and the the Tourist Office. Thank you for taking the time to read this email and we hope you may be able to help us. Kind Regards Jill Mannion Brunt + Stephen Brunt (the booking is in the name of Stephen Brunt)

Unpowered grass and gravel site

Liked: Location is as described, the site wasn't busy.

Disliked: Unfortunately the facilities on this site did not meet our expectations, as a touring camper we look for shower and toilet that are functioning, clean and well maintained. The smell from the drainage was repugnant and the one member of our party that could stomach a shower said the water was hot but the water took a long time to drain away and the room flooded and although the toilets were cleaned the doors were broken there was a disabled shower room but the access ramps were damaged and uneven. A resident roaming dog came to our pitch and clearly has freedom to roam and toilet. Bar/ restaurant area loosely as described unfortunately on our arrival no food available, take away pizza in nearby town was excellent. We left early as we couldn't face the facilities for a second night. It's tired rundown and poorly maintained

Liked: Peaceful large site with a choice of pitches. Amazing stars and owls hooting at night. Access to 2 fridge freezers for keeping food & drink cold.

Disliked: Limited shade available. Few toilets & showers - was fine for us as very empty but would be overwhelmed if site was busy.

Local attractions

There’s birdwatching on site, but you won’t catch sight of any animals as big as those at the zoo Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine (15 minutes’ drive). It makes for a classic family day out – as do the likes of Futuroscope (an hour and 15 minutes) and the history-themed Puy du Fou (both an hour and 15 minutes). Spectacular French cities and towns are never too far away, either. Start by exploring Chinon (45 minutes), which has been a favourite with French nobles since the 15th century. Meanwhile, Angers (55 minutes) has old architecture and a historic cathedral, as well as up-and-coming cafés. Tours (an hour and five minutes), of course, is a well-known spot between two rivers, with a Gothic cathedral, church and multiple museums. A historic spot, indeed… and the same can certainly be said of Fontevraud-l'Abbaye (20 minutes) in Maine-et-Loire.
