  • Family-friendly camping with mountain views in the Pyrénées-Orientales
  • Corbières Massif walks from site; Gorges de Galamus 20 minutes’ drive
  • Riding school, heated swimming pool, quad biking and snack bar on site
Set at an altitude of 350 metres among the vineyards and forests of the Pyrénées-Orientales, the grass camping pitches at Domaine de Castel Fizel estate have undulating mountains as a backdrop. Scattered across several acres, they're located among holm oak woodlands about five minutes’ drive from the cute village of Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes. Between mid-June and mid-September, life on this family-centric site revolves around the heated swimming pool (there’s also a paddling pool for non-swimmers). A play area keeps toddlers entertained, and active families can kick a ball around on the multi-sports field or get down to competitive games of ping pong. Other (supervised and chargeable) activities for kids include horse riding (lessons and trekking) and electric quad biking (for ages six to 10). Useful summertime facilities for busy families include a takeaway service, a constant supply of cold drinks and ice cream from the snack bar, and communal barbecues if you’re sticking to self-catering – pick up supplies in Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes. Please note that in high season groups of children will be around, so expect to share space around the pool and the pitches with them. Your days on site may be filled with music, song and kids’ laughter, but rest assured the campsite has a noise policy, so all is quiet between 10pm and 8am.

Local attractions

As Domaine de Castel Fizel sits at the foot of the Corbières Massif, it’s a doddle to get out onto mountain-biking trails direct from the pitches. Steep circular loops lead through pine forest and there are also family-friendly jaunts along the Boulzane river valley (20 minutes’ cycle). Likewise, walkers find much to please them in valleys planted with vines, along the way-marked Sentier Botanique de Vira (25 minutes’ drive), a great trail for spotting wild flowers, or through the dramatic Gorges de Galamus (20 minutes), which is also scene of high-octane canyoning, rafting, hydrospeeding and kayaking through white water. The Pyrénées-Orientales region is home to several Cathar castles dating from medieval times: Château de Peyrepertuse (45 minutes) sits on a limestone cliff and is open for self-guided tours, and you can walk around the defence walls at Château de Quéribus (half an hour). The clifftop remains of the castle at Puilaurens (20 minutes) are accessed by a steep footpath for views over snow-clad peaks. Alternatively, see these castles and more from the comfort of the Cathar Region Red Train, which runs from April to mid-November and stops at Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes (five minutes).

Power optional grass site

Liked: Großer Stellplatz mit viel Privatsphäre. Bäume die Schatten gespendet haben. Schöner Pool. Ruhige Lage zum Erholen. Sehr schöner Ausblick auf die Pyrenäen.

Disliked: Kein Auslass für die Chemietoilette. Sanitärbereiche sind nicht auf dem neuesten Stand. Beim Abspülbereich ist das Wasser nur lauwarm.

Power optional grass tent site (motorcyclist, no cars)

Liked: Very big pitches and super clean toilet block. Best showers I've ever had on a campsite! Very friendly staff too.
