  • Woodland camping 10 minutes’ drive from Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes
  • A 20-minute drive to Château de Puilaurens; 40 minutes to Tautavel
  • Swimming pool and play area; Finnish kota, terrace restaurant and shop
Hidden away under a canopy of trees in a steep-sided Pyréneés-Orientales valley, peaceful riverside Camping des Randonneurs is surrounded by dramatic gorges and rugged peaks. This little mountain haven has spectacular views to the village of Fenouillet (five minutes’ drive) and its hilltop Cathar castle. The campsite sits in a six-acre wooded valley 10 minutes’ drive from Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes, and the spacious and shaded pitches are a handy starting point for active families looking to get out on signposted hiking trails, mountain-biking trails and via ferrata climbing routes. But if all that sounds too much like hard work, grab a book and chill around the swimming pool, then cool off with a dip and make a beeline for the terrace bar for a glass of local wine and a menu of regional specialities. If you’d rather stick to self-catering, head for the communal Finnish kota (a small wooden chalet for barbecuing) with its wood-fired grill, and there’s also a grocery shop where you can stock up the basics (milk, bread, pasta, butter) as well as local produce. Kids are taken care of with a slide, swing and small climbing wall in the playground, and you can keep everyone looking shipshape thanks to the laundry area with a washing machine and dryer (a small fee applies).

Local attractions

The Pyréneés-Orientales are home of several Cathar castles – 12th-century fortifications built to protect a breakaway religious sect. The ruins of Château Vicomtal Saint-Pierre (five minutes’ drive) sits on a rocky outcrop overlooking Fenouillet village, while Château de Puilaurens (20 minutes) soars over the Boulzane Valley – walk around its walls for views over the surrounding hills. Peyrepertuse (50 minutes) perches on a limestone clifftop, with its dungeons, chapel and towers open for exploration. It’s home to one of the biggest medieval festivals in southern France in the summer. To see the ruins from a different perspective, fly over them on a microlight tour. Otherwise, you can explore the land of the Cathar castles on horseback and foot, or by pedal power. To up the tempo a bit, try rafting down white water in the Galamus (25 minutes’ drive) and Saint-Jaume (five minutes) gorges, or go canyoning in the Gorges du Verdouble (45 minutes). For some serious time-travelling back to prehistory, visit the Caune de l’Arago cave in Tautavel (40 minutes), where early humans lived 450,000 years ago, and learn more about them at the Museum of Prehistory.
