  • Normandy campsite on a woodland estate 45 minutes’ drive from Caen
  • La Roche d’Oëtre 25 minutes’ drive; Calvados tastings 40 minutes
  • Fishing lake, woodland walks and protected wildlife on site
It’s not every day you get to camp on a NATURA 2000-protected site, but Glamping Calvados, 45 minutes’ drive from historic Caen in rural Normandy countryside, is one such place. Here you can pitch up on a private estate stretching over 18 acres of untamed wilderness, and you stand a good chance of spotting pine martens, badgers, kingfishers and deer during your stay. There’s no industry and no farming on the site, and you, the kids (and any accompanying dogs) are welcome to roam wherever you please among the woodland and around the lake. Yes, there’s a lake too, filled with big-size carp to keep the keen anglers among you happy (it’s catch-and-release only, by arrangement with the site owners). If fishing isn’t your bag, you can still have a paddle around the shoreline in a dinghy moored at the wooden jetty. But back to the basic details: camping is on grass pitches with plenty of room around them so you never feel squashed in. Campfires are allowed if you fancy cooking alfresco, and you can hire firepits and buy firewood (when available). Please note that all your camping gear has to be carried a short distance from the campsite parking area – trolleys are available to make things easier for you.

Local attractions

When you’ve thoroughly explored your immediate surroundings and had a row on the lake, maybe it’s time to turn to higher-octane pastimes. Go river rafting from Thury Outdoor (15 minutes’ drive) on the winding River Orne, don stout boots for rock climbing at craggy, forested La Roche d’Oëtre (25 minutes), or give the kids an active day out on the treetop climbing courses at Orne Aventure - Accrobranche Normandie (half an hour). For more cultural happenings, historic Caen (45 minutes) is your spot. At the castle, walk the medieval ramparts, tour the keep and explore the history and art museums, and when it’s refreshment time, grab a chair in a café overlooking the lively marina. Hang out at trendy nightspots in the city’s Vaugueux neighbourhood, or head closer to base camp to catch live music at Le Soubock Coffee Concert (five minutes). And of course, you may want to sample the local apple brandy; distillery tours and Calvados tastings are available at Domaine des Cinq Autels and Domaine de la Flaguerie (both 40 minutes), as well as many other producers scattered around Normandy.
