  • Family park close to a sandy Ayrshire beach
  • Nearby access to Glasgow and Ayr by railway adjacent to the site
  • Indoor pool, sports activities, restaurant, games room and playground
The residents of Saltcoats, a historic harbour town on the west coast of Scotland, used to spend the night in 'salt cots', hence the place’s name. Luckily, these days there are better facilities for a sojourn close to the town’s handsome beach, such as Ayrshire's Sandylands Holiday Park. Guests can swim, splash and snorkel their way around the indoor pool or get stuck into some of the organised sports activities on site, and there are also kids’ clubs for children up to 11, featuring the usual Parkdean Resorts group characters of the Starland Krew. In the evenings, the Buccaneers Showbar runs theme nights, competitions and family shows, with live bands and cabarets regularly making an appearance to get toes tapping. For easy access to the surrounding area, a railway line runs adjacent to the holiday park – very nifty for visiting Glasgow, Ayr, Largs and beyond.

What customers say

Great staff & entertainment. Good pitches. Downside: noisy railway, closed bridge to beach, some cleanliness issues. A few found it tired/expensive for what's on offer.

Liked Ease of access. 24hr toilets and grey waste water disposal.

Disliked Although advertised as a short walk to the beach there did not seem to be any access due to a railway bridge having had its steps removed, would have had to walk into Saltcoats and then back down to Stevenston on the coastline from what I could see.

I stayed on the No 1 hardstanding pitch. The bollard advertising the pitch number had been knocked down and there seemed to be adhoc litter around the van ie plastic clips and assorted bungee cords. The area was functional, however, a bit tired.

The hardstanding pitches back right on to the railway.

Around 1:30am the occupants of the van next to me had a very noisy domestic which resulted in broken glass and ceramics on the No 2 Hardstanding. During the course of the fight an occupant set about their outdoor camping furniture breaking some of it. The occupant, who was very drunk then proceeded to drive off with the van leaving his wife and son behind on the grass.

No one came to check this distrubance out. In the morning when I was packing up around 6am it became apparent that there was glass broken around the No 2 pitch and on the grass. I walked down to the security gate which was unmanned. I had to all the mobile number provided outside the security gate to inform the park personnel to clear up the glass before a child or someone's pet managed to cut their feet and also to collect the damaged furniture. The security guard said he would let the office staff know when they arrived.

Liked The friendly staff.

Disliked The unsitely area behind the entertainment block and beside the toilets. The lack of access to the beach due to the closed off derelict footbridge. The false advertising showing the beach but having no access to it. The train line could be hidden a bit by shrubbery.
The food in the restaurant was completely overcooked and dried out in a microwave.

Local attractions

The landscapes in this part of Ayrshire are stunning, so it’s no surprise that some of the country’s most famed championship golf courses, including Prestwick, Royal Troon and Turnberry, can be found in the area. As the birthplace of Robert Burns, Ayrshire is also rich in cultural attractions and museums relating to Scotland’s national poet. It’s easy to hop aboard the nearby ferry at Ardrossan for a day trip across the Firth of Clyde to Arran – the journey usually takes less than an hour and passengers regularly see dolphins during the crossing. Arran has miles of beautiful forest and coastal walks, more great golf courses, and attractions such as Brodick Castle and the Arran Heritage Museum to explore. The railway line that passes Sandylands Holiday Park also runs a limited service to the likes of Glasgow and Ayr, should visitors fancy exploring the area by train.
