Sandylands Holiday Park: The indoor swimming pool

General

  • Family park close to a sandy Ayrshire beach
  • Nearby access to Glasgow and Ayr by railway adjacent to the site
  • Indoor pool, sports activities, restaurant, games room and playground

The residents of Saltcoats, a historic harbour town on the west coast of Scotland, used to spend the night in 'salt cots', hence the place’s name. Luckily, these days there are better facilities for a sojourn close to the town’s handsome beach, such as Ayrshire's Sandylands Holiday Park.

Guests can swim, splash and snorkel their way around the indoor pool or get stuck into some of the organised sports activities on site, and there are also kids’ clubs for children up to 11, featuring the usual Parkdean Resorts group characters of the Starland Krew.

In the evenings, the Buccaneers Showbar runs theme nights, competitions and family shows, with live bands and cabarets regularly making an appearance to get toes tapping. For easy access to the surrounding area, a railway line runs adjacent to the holiday park – very nifty for visiting Glasgow, Ayr, Largs and beyond.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Single-sex parties of three or more people under 25 are not permitted on site.

Swimming pool access is included: please show your Entertainment pass.

Entertainment passes are included in the rate.

It seemed well organised and the staff were friendly, the pitch fee was reasonable and the shower block was clean. A short walk to the centre of Saltcoats (but not much there). It was OK for a brief stopover in the low season.

    Disliked:

The touring pitches were directly adjacent to the main railway line so noisy from an early hour and late into the night. The railway overbridge which would give access to the promenade and beach/dunes area is closed necessitating a long walk either round from Saltcoats centre or to Stevenston level crossing to access the beach/promenade.The grass on site is well trimmed but there was a lot of litter and it is a bit bleak and would benefit from some green landscaping, hedges and trees etc. Also the site as a whole is adjacent to an abattoir/meat processing plant, there is not much you can do about this but some heavy tree planting to screen the walk past might help. Not a site suitable for vegetarians.

The location as only stopped for 1 night and was on our way to mull

    Disliked:

Only wanted the beach and showers as only there for 1 night stop off the beach access from site was closed and we were not informed prior to our visit or we would of canceled, the train line running behind our van was also not mentioned even though the trains were electric and not that noisy the only way to the beach was a mile to a bridge across it and a mile back to get to the nearest beach and as our dog is blind it was too far for him we had been travelling for 6 hours and the reason why we pick sites is so he can have a little run without bumping into stuff so the beach is ideal, also when we got to the showers they weren't that clean so decided to have a shower in the morning as the sign said they do a deep clean every morning so we waited till the time stated and if putting a few toilet rolls in the cubicles is classed a a deep clean shame on park Dean resorts,so we decided to leave without showering and will most definitely not be returning.

Lovely park. Good facilities. Food in restaurant excellent.

    Disliked:

Couldn't go to beach as the bridge was closed. A long walk to next one and then found it was all rocks. The best nit of beach is at the caravan park so double the walk. As a consequence of the bridge being closed kids couldn’t go to beach so lots of them running about. Very noisy but not their fault.

    Disliked:

    Location of touring pitches
Toilet/shower facilities. Although just for tourers they were not secured and therefore accessible to everyone. Limited ventilation lead to mold growing and overall cleanliness not great.

Local attractions

The landscapes in this part of Ayrshire are stunning, so it’s no surprise that some of the country’s most famed championship golf courses, including Prestwick, Royal Troon and Turnberry, can be found in the area.

As the birthplace of Robert Burns, Ayrshire is also rich in cultural attractions and museums relating to Scotland’s national poet.

It’s easy to hop aboard the nearby ferry at Ardrossan for a day trip across the Firth of Clyde to Arran – the journey usually takes less than an hour and passengers regularly see dolphins during the crossing.

Arran has miles of beautiful forest and coastal walks, more great golf courses, and attractions such as Brodick Castle and the Arran Heritage Museum to explore.

The railway line that passes Sandylands Holiday Park also runs a limited service to the likes of Glasgow and Ayr, should visitors fancy exploring the area by train.

Must see

  • Scottish Maritime Museum (6.3 kilometers)
  • Burns National Heritage Park (24.3 kilometers)
  • Culzean Castle & Country Park (31.0 kilometers)
