The residents of Saltcoats, a historic harbour town on the west coast of Scotland, used to spend the night in 'salt cots', hence the place’s name. Luckily, these days there are better facilities for a sojourn close to the town’s handsome beach, such as Ayrshire's Sandylands Holiday Park. Guests can swim, splash and snorkel their way around the indoor pool or get stuck into some of the organised sports activities on site, and there are also kids’ clubs for children up to 11, featuring the usual Parkdean Resorts group characters of the Starland Krew. In the evenings, the Buccaneers Showbar runs theme nights, competitions and family shows, with live bands and cabarets regularly making an appearance to get toes tapping. For easy access to the surrounding area, a railway line runs adjacent to the holiday park – very nifty for visiting Glasgow, Ayr, Largs and beyond.

What customers say

Clean showers and helpful staff are often mentioned positively. Kids love the arcade and shop. However, some guests found shower blocks weren't always spotless, and pitches are near a railway. A closed bridge affects beach access. Noise, pitch bookings and electric hook-ups were also noted.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The arcade and shop were good for my kids to enjoy. The showers and toilets were clean.
We didn’t use any other facilities.

Disliked The smell of drugs, couples arguing loudly at night, people smoking and vaping at every door were not enjoyable.
We booked for 2 nights and when we came back for our second night after being out for the day someone else was in our pitch (with tent set up). We ended up in another pitch and our neighbours said this happens all the time. People don’t actually use the pitches they are given. The staff were great at helping to sort it out for us.
We booked an electric hook up pitch but there was no electric hook up available to us. I spoke to customer services the next day and they offered to lend us an extra long cable to reach another pitch.
Overall the customer service was good, but I won’t be back because the site just wasn’t for us.

From the manager: Good afternoon,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback following your stay with us.

We’re pleased to hear you found our team helpful and that your children enjoyed the arcade and shop facilities, as well as the cleanliness of the shower and toilet areas.

However, we’re very sorry that several aspects of your stay did not meet expectations. The issues you experienced regarding noise and guest behaviour are disappointing to hear, and we completely understand how this affected your overall experience.

We also sincerely apologise for the confusion surrounding your allocated pitch and the electric hook-up issue. This is clearly not the standard we aim to provide, and your comments regarding pitch management and accessibility of the electric supply have been shared with the relevant teams for review.

While we appreciate your kind comments about our customer service team, we’re sorry to hear the site was ultimately not the right fit for your family. Thank you again for your honest feedback, which helps us identify areas where improvements are needed. ^EC

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Near Saltcoats town a lovely little placce

Disliked Touring pitch flooded for whole week. Large boulder directly across from pitch that made hitching up difficult.
Toilet block while clean I never managed to get a hot shower all week after complaining I was told there was hot water! Not when I went in.
Entertaining program poor only a turn on a couple of nights even though it was Easter Holidays.
Bar and chip shop eye watering expensive.
Would I go back No

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The near to the toilettes. The clearness of the toilettes, the possibility to wash the clothes. And the small distance to the beach….(theoretical)…
We had only the Sound from the waves…

Disliked Because there is no way to go to the Beach!
The Bridge is defekt and unuseable!!!!
We had to go min. 30 min. To the sand.
There was no sand in sandyland!
The Train bitween the pitch and the Beach drives every hour, often at night also.
So it is Not really possibility to relax.
There is no Information about this all at the website.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Nothing

Disliked The pitches for campervans was situated beside the rail way tracks which ran early hours, the site just lacks any kind of cleanliness! The shower facilities were dated and just felt unclean and smelly. The site was busy, the entertainment for the children were seriously questioning their life choices and lacked enthusiasm. The drinks in the resort bar were expensive. The drive into the park itself went through a estate which made you wonder if you were going the right way. We struggled to find access to the beach was part of it's appeal. I would not recommend this site!

Local attractions

The landscapes in this part of Ayrshire are stunning, so it’s no surprise that some of the country’s most famed championship golf courses, including Prestwick, Royal Troon and Turnberry, can be found in the area. As the birthplace of Robert Burns, Ayrshire is also rich in cultural attractions and museums relating to Scotland’s national poet. It’s easy to hop aboard the nearby ferry at Ardrossan for a day trip across the Firth of Clyde to Arran – the journey usually takes less than an hour and passengers regularly see dolphins during the crossing. Arran has miles of fabulous forest and coastal walks, more great golf courses, and attractions such as Brodick Castle and the Arran Heritage Museum to explore. The railway line that passes Sandylands Holiday Park also runs a limited service to the likes of Glasgow and Ayr, should visitors fancy exploring the area by train.
