  • Rural Dorset site eight miles from Dorchester and 16 from the coast
  • Treasure trails and countryside walks just steps away
  • Just over a mile from pubs, a tearoom and a shop in Cerne Abbas
Warning! A trip to ancient Cerne Abbas may leave you with a mammoth yearning never to leave: the Dorset village has been described as the ‘Britain’s most desirable village’ to live among the UK’s scenic many. It’s eight miles from Dorchester, within day-tripping distance of the Jurassic Coast and, most famously, is where the 180ft Cerne Abbas Giant doth dwell high up on the hillside. (Yes, the naughty giant with no sense of shyness.) Around a 40-minute stroll from Cerne Abbas is the mightily convenient Giants Head Caravan & Camping Park, a family- and dog-friendly site over three and a half acres with grassy pitches, immense views over the Dorset countryside and thumping good access to the best of Dorset. Countryside walks, as well as treasure trails, literally start within steps of the pitches: Giants Head has several planned walks straight from the park, and runs Treasure Trails Dorset directly from it so intrepid guests can pick up one or two of the 50+ trail packs and take off on the hunt for hidden gems. Sounds like a towering amount of fun… As befits its location, everything at Giants Head is kept nicely natural – think mature trees, hedgerows and trim lawns; and the level or gently sloping pitches are variously secluded, shady or open (there’s also a special tail-wagging area for campers with canines). All parts of the park are well-drained and a hard road leads to pitches. Amenities include showers, hand basins, laundry and washing-up areas; the park doesn’t have a shop, but a well-stocked village store, a tearoom and three pubs are in Cerne Abbas, a mile and a quarter away.

Liked Clean and well maintained facilities. Lovely friendly people onsite. Nice area to explore and site is knowledgeable on the local area. Peaceful and lovely views.

Disliked Small amount of noise from the road but this was expected so not really a dislike just something to be aware of if.

From the manager: We are really pleased you enjoyed your stay with us.
We try and keep our facilities nice and clean, this is a lot easier now with our lovely new toilet block.
There are lots of great places to visit and some not very well known.
And yes, we do have some great views across the downs.

The road can be a little noisy at this time of the year with a few tractors and farm vehicles going by.

We look forward to seeing you all again soon.

From the manager: We are so pleased you loved our site. It is quiet here except for a bit of traffic passing the site.

We are really happy with our new toilet block, so easy to keep clean and fresh.

Lots of great walks here, we are right on the Wessex Ridgeway so great spot for walkers.

Hope to see you again soon.

Liked I liked that there was a clean toilet block, on the county trail system, and plenty of space to park and use any brought items. The service was great, helpful and even gave notice when they would and wouldn't be around. On one morning we saw a stag, and lots of birdlife.

Disliked As other reviews will confirm, there is constant motor noise from the road, the site is built completely for caravans and RVs which makes pitch tent camping unusual even with an electricity plug adapter, and service / food amenities are driving distances away. I also wish that fires / pits were allowed.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us.

Fortunately you had a pitch at the quiet area of the site, far away from road so it shouldn't have bothered you too much.

Our site is not just for caravans and RVs, we have lots of areas for tents all close to HU points.

The village of Cerne Abbas is about one and a half miles away and is walkable along the Wessex Ridgeway, however it is a little steep coming back up the hill from the village.

We do allow fire pits and BBQs but they do need to be kept off of the ground so not to cause a fire or burn the ground.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday around th eUK.

Liked We only stayed for 30 minutes and left as below

Disliked We arrived here this evening and left within 30 mins , I’ve seen excellent reviews on here previously hence the booking , the chap that showed us the pitch was very helpful but I was disappointed the pitch grass was very long and untidy and he also mentioned some contractors staying in the middle that might be a bit noisy later on , we have relocated to Lyon’s Gate and to be honest it’s on another level to the previous site.

From the manager: This is my second reply to another of your reviews:-

You did mention when you checked in that you had only just bought your campervan and this was your very first trip.

I am sorry the grass is a little long , unfortunately we have not been able to mow the grass because of the wet weather, our mowers do not cut grass very well in the wet.

I think you may have misheard my son, who checked you in, there are a few caravans on site which belong to contractors but as they are not here on site at the moment I'm not sure how they would have been noisy.

I hope you liked Lyons Gate, my friends run this site and it is lovely.

I enjoyed my stay and would go again.

Liked There's a brand new toilet block which is bright, clean and equipped with a hairdryer which was useful. The staff are friendly and helpful and although the grounds are hilly there are flatter areas to pitch a tent on.
Their are good views and it's centrally placed between Sherborne and Dorchester.

Disliked I found the shower anxiety making as the light comes on at one end and the water automatically starts at the other end of a long room. I was anxious about how long the light would be on and if I'd need to walk the length of the room in the dark. A little information would have helped.
The road beside is a busy one, but quieter at night and didn't really bother me.

From the manager: We are really pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. Glad you liked our new toilet block, it has been a while coming but we think it was worth the wait.
we do have a friendly team here who all want everyone to have a enjoyable stay with us.
There are a few sloping areas but we try sand keep these free as a children's play area.

I am a little confused with your shower anxiety comment, all our showers have two automatic lights which come on as soon as anyone enters the shower, and remains on for several minutes after the shower is vacated. I have checked all four showers and all the light are working fine.

Look forward to seeing you again.

From the manager: We are so pleased you (and your dog) enjoyed your stay with us. Glad you liked our facilities, we have only recently re-opened our reburbed toilet block.

Local attractions

If you have giggling kids along with you – and even if you don’t – a trip to the well-endowed and world-famed Cerne Abbas Giant is most visitors’ first stop, if only to buy a postcard (it’s been noted that postcards of the Giant are the only images of a naked man that can be sent via the Post Office). The man himself is now tended by the National Trust, which has a waymarked circular trail around the site from Cerne Abbas village. Dorchester is an excellent early stop for urbanites and heritage-heads: here you’ll find history-dedicated days out as varied as the Dinosaur Museum, Dorchester Museum, Teddy Bear Museum, Tutankhamen Exhibition and the Roman Amphitheatre; take the Durnovaria Town Walk for an outdoorsy overview of the city’s main sights. Thomas Hardy’s Cottage is at Dorchester too and the literary can book into their schedule the Thomas Hardy Trail, a six-mile circular walk within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Elsewhere around the area, take the enormous amount of things to see and do in your stride: from castles to dinosaurs, theme parks to heritage railways and historic houses to tank museums, the coast to countryside have whopping opps for days out (and in; dash to Dorchester’s West Dorset Leisure Centre on a rainy day when the kids need to let off steam). Historic houses and gardens like Kingston Lacy, Athelhampton House and Minterne House and Gardens should suit the sedately inclined, while the less sedate (hello kids) will no doubt prefer chattering at the likes of Monkey World in Wareham, Adventure Wonderland at Christchurch or Sea Life near Weymouth. Both sorts should have a tanking good time at Bovington’s Tank Museum, the second biggest collection of armoured vehicles on the planet. Head for the coast, half an hour's drive away, to fossil hunt or take a guided fossil tour at Lyme Regis or Charmouth; soak up sun and sights at seaside towns such as Weymouth, Swanage and Christchurch; float on a boat to the Channel Islands or potter around glorious Poole Harbour and epically beaut Brownsea Island, also managed by the National Trust. The award-winning Swanage Railway is a gently relaxed way to see some of the sights of Dorset (including Famous Five inspiration Corfe Castle) and holds regular events including driving experiences and special days for children.
