  • Lakeside site on a farm in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • A 10-minute drive from Battle, between Standard Hill and Tent Hill
  • Wild swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding free on the site’s lake
Get down to a lakeside site where there are dips on demand… with kayaks and paddleboards, paddleboarding and wild swimming free here, you’ll likely be well-acquainted with the water by the end of your stay at Frickley Lake in East Sussex. However, it’s not all about watersports, lovely as they may be. Under five miles away from Ashburnham, this farm site is 10 minutes’ drive away from Battle, where the Battle of Hastings took place and the pitches are in the location where William the Conqueror camped and set his standard up the day before the battle. With paddleboards and kayaks provided, the spring-fed lake will dish out plenty of natural beauty, but there are also plenty of other places to take in the local scenery. Frickley Lake is on a farm in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty between Standard Hill and Tent Hill – two places to round the group together for a climb with some history, as the former is where King Charles formed his army for the war. Back on site, keep yourself in ship shape for more adventuring using the gas showers and toilets located in a shepherd’s hut. These may come in particularly handy for any sand you’ve picked up coastal spots such as Hastings or Bexhill-on-Sea, which are both 15 minutes’ drive away. For food to keep your batteries topped up while you roam about, there are farm shops and pubs five minutes’ drive away from the site.

Liked: Clean site Beautiful lake Children loved the kayaks and swing Kind, friendly hosts Lovely hot shower Parked next to our pitch Our dog loved running around the field Communal fire pit Beautiful wooden carvings We booked last minute and the site more than met our expectations. Hosts were very responsive and we all felt very safe. Beautiful surroundings, visited Bexhill-on- Sea which was well worth a visit. We’ll definitely be back.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike! If had to give one suggestion it would be better signage as we got lost upon arrival

Liked: Campsite not too busy. We loved using the communal kayaks on the lake. There was even limited use of a fridge, freezer and gas stove. Toilets very clean and well stocked with toilet paper. There were also picnic benches which was very handy. Lots of things for young kids to explore and the swing was lots of fun.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Nice and quiet. Good campfire area. Lovely lake, kayak and paddle boards. Friendly staff.

Disliked: Toilets could do with a clean to get rid of the cobwebs. There is a water safety sign but could do with another one near chairs and kayaks, to remind all of parental supervision and need for flotation device etc

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: This was our 2nd visit to Frickley Lake, and it won't be the last! We rented a Bell tent that was already pitched, which is such a luxury. The campsite is immaculate. The lake itself is pretty, and the childre loved being able to use the kayaks and paddle board. There is a central fire pit which is great for large groups. The toilets are clean, and modern, again the children liked fun animals pictures in them. The gas fired showers are an experience! Our little family love Frickley Lake and look forward to our next visit.

Liked: Location and all facilities that are as described. Lake is brilliant and the swing in the trees was a kids favourite. Beautiful setting and we will be going there again! The kids loved climbing over and along the large fallen trees that line the camp area.

Local attractions

Now that you’ve got some of Battle’s history under your belt, there are other old tales around these parts. The National Trust’s Bateman’s (20 minutes' drive) once belonged to a late Victorian writer, so this 17th-century country house still has some of his old collections. The nearby Herstmonceux Castle (15 minutes) has over 300 acres in all too, so potter around the gardens and moat or take some tea in the tearooms. Book yourself in for a beach day… whether it’s a simple paddle you’re after or you'd like to give something like windsurfing or jetskiing a go, Bexhill beach (15 minutes) has a few types of watersports available. Perhaps some beach games at Hastings beach (half an hour) too, or a go at the amusement arcades along the Victorian boardwalk in Eastbourne (35 minutes)? For those of you who have kids to keep busy, there are a few dedicated places around, such as the play zones and animals at the Knockhatch Adventure Park (25 minutes) or Drusillas Park's zoo (35 minutes). For some learning along the way, The Observatory Science Centre (15 minutes) will let you spy on space through telescopes and add to your astronomy knowledge.
