  • Well-kept landscaped park near Croston, 20 minutes' drive from Preston
  • A 30-minute drive from Southport; Blackpool and Lytham 45 minutes
  • Well-tended garden, play area and dog exercise area on site
Score. Royal Umpire Caravan Park in rural Lancashire hits quite a few goals if you're looking for a holiday park within easy reach of the coast, old English villages and scenic countryside. Set just outside of the scenic, close-knit village of Croston, the site is only a 20-minute drive from Preston, half an hour from Southport and 45 minutes from both Blackpool and Lytham. It's rather splendid on site too. The landscaped park is surrounded by 60 acres of countryside and has a garden area, a mini football pitch and a dog exercise area for your trusty four-legged friends. Kids can let off steam at the well-equipped play area, which has a soft wood bark surface, swings, slides and a climbing frame. Toilets and shower facilities are in a single, heated amenities block. Local village Croston, under five minutes' drive away, is a pretty little place with a 15th-century cobbled bridge over the river Yarrow, annual flower displays and traditional pubs, restaurants, cafés and shops. A pub is a two-minute walk away from the site; just over the street, it has outdoor seating and a menu full of classic pub meals.

What customers say

Pods comfy & warm, with great facilities for kids. But, cleanliness issues in pods & showers are a concern. Some showers faulty, others lacking hot water. Dog area small, and pod allocation mix-ups noted.

Gemini camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked The pod itself was lovely and clean, with all crockery and utensils needed provided. Kettle, toaster, microwave and fridge with small freezer. Tv easy to use and the staff were all always happy to help if needed. The grounds themselves are very well kept along with the shower and toilet cubicles. The added effect of the twinkling lights inside the pod were a lovely added touch (although slightly noisy). As a family with younger and older children it’s been a pleasure for all of us.

Disliked Wished you could have a camp fire however understand why not.

Aries camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked The pods were a very good size and having a kettle, toaster, fridge and microwave is great.

Disliked Our pod had not been cleaned, there was dog food all over the floor and food everywhere. I told reception and they moved us which was good but the new pod was also dirty. I didn’t complain again I just cleaned the pod which I shouldn’t have to do! This site is really missing a trick, it clearly just isn’t run very well. They only reply to good reviews and ignore bad ones.
The toilets and showers really need updating, this place could be great! We did not see any staff at all after check in for 3 days!

Liked The lights in the pod

Disliked The shower block was awful, no hot water, dirty, broken showers, broken doors. Badly maintained site and if I could have moved to another site I would have.

Aries camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked The pods were a decent size and better equipped than expected. The playing field was huge and the playground had equipment to entertain the children. We went as a family group with 3 pods next to each other and had a nice time.

The pods were really well priced and good value for money.

Disliked What really let everything down was the cleanliness of the toilets and showers, which according to the sheet on the door had last been cleaned on the Thursday. Which by the Sunday wasn’t very pleasant!

Liked The site is lovely, plenty of space for us all and our children. Well placed for local beauty spots.

Disliked Beds are a little uncomfortable and the pods could use a deep clean inside and out.

Gemini camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked It was quiet and the cabin looked nice from the outside

Disliked The cabin on a close inspection was not clean. There was ice left in the freezer. The kettle still had water in it.There was broken biscuits left down the side of the mattresses along with two pairs of socks and sunglasses. They were cobwebs everywhere lots of moths and even a couple of ear weeks. There was a big draft coming from one of the windows that was not closed properly as the bottom catch was broke.
We booked for a 3 night stay but only ended up staying for 1 night as the person I was with did not cope well with how meany bugs were there and how unclean the place actually was.
Also one of the main reasons why I booked there was because they had an enclosed dog field The dog exercise area is an absolute joke and I wouldn’t put any dog in there. There was holes all over the fence, Big gaps in the gate and it’s mainly concrete.

Local attractions

Royal Umpire Caravan Park's location is right on the ball if you're game for exploring the north west: it's easy to get to all the region's main towns and cities from here as well as the Lancashire coast just to the west and the Forest of Bowland to the north east. Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool don't need much of an intro from us and should probably have at least a day/night out spent in each, as should Preston, which includes the biggest gallery space in Lancashire at the Preston Free Public Library, and Bolton, once named by boffins as England's friendliest town. If the kids need mollifying after a morning at the shops, take them to Worden Park in Leyland to let off steam: it has open meadows, mature woodlands and a hedge maze to run around in, a miniature railway, nine-hole golf course and lots of wildlife to see.
