General

  • Well-kept, landscaped pitch and wigwam park on the edge of Croston
  • Set out in green meadows with a well-tended garden and play area
  • Excellent location and surrounded by traditional pubs/restaurants

Score! Royal Umpire Caravan Park at Leyland in Lancashire hits quite a few goals if you're looking for a holiday park in England's north-west that's close to the sands at Southport, and within easy reach of ringing the tills/partying in Preston or lighting up the kids' faces in Blackpool.

It's rather ace on site too at this neatly kept and prettily set out park, with peaceful green meadows and a sunken garden to sink into with a book and a cuppa. There's a mini football pitch for mini Ronaldos (there might be quite a few of these given the park's location near Liverpool and Manchester), and a well-equipped play area with a soft wood bark surface, swings, slides and a climbing frame if the kids want to make a bit of a racket. The shower blocks are centrally heated and have free hot water, baby changing and disabled access.

Several reasonably-priced and family-friendly pubs and restaurants are in the area: check out the Highfield, serving breakfast from 8 until 11am, two-for-one deals on mains and a Sunday carvery; the Wheatsheaf, with an excellent range of real ales (hurrah!), freshly prepared meals and events (quiz night on Tuesdays, live music on Saturdays and karaoke once a month); the Bangladeshi restaurant Panshi and the Italian restaurant Fresco Fresco.

Dogs will find Royal Umpire right in their league too, as it's dog-friendly and has a big area set aside for canine constitutionals – result.

We were greeted upon arrival and allocated our pitch, the staff are very accommodating and the facilities are well kept.

The toilets and shower blocks are cleaned everyday for over an hour each time.

    Disliked:

I couldn't find any faults with the staff at all. You do have to be-careful though as the site has tractors in operation regularly collecting rubbish from the site.

Clean and tidy. Good play area

    Disliked:

Expensive considering it wasn't actually a "pitch" we were given but told to just park anywhere on the field. Grass needed cutting. Too close to other campers. Loud music late at night and early in tje morning. Didn't like the owners ringing to see what time we would be arriving (on route and way before 8pm) making us feel like an inconvenience.

Dear Guest
We are happy to hear you found our site clean and tidy and liked out play area.
Our grass has been cut within the camping field recently, we do have to wait until we have had good weather to do so as it ends up being in clumps and all over the toilets and showers from campers, the weather has been very up and down here over the past month but we have managed to get the filed done. We do have wardens on site in case we do have any fellow guests disregarding our site rules, their number is in the welcome packs provided upon check in.
We apologise if our receptionists had worded anything incorrectly when checking time of arrival, we make courtesy calls to all late arrivals as when the office closes the park warden takes over, the call is there to get an estimated time of arrival so our park wardens can be made aware of what time to expect your call to check in, if a time of arrival has been left we call to ensure that time is still correct.

Dear Guest
We are pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay with us, found our site well laid out, liked our facilities and found our staff friendly.
Our toilets and showers are cleaned every morning however from 5pm our park wardens take over and do regular checks which they sign after completion, we will look at how many checks are done and see if we can increase this through our busy periods and ensure our groundstaff take a look at previous pitches on their way around if previous pitches have left anything behind.

Directions

From the M6 south:
Come off the M6 at Junction 27. Up the slip road turn left and immediately move to the right hand lane, turn right towards Chorley, Eccleston. Stay on this road for about 15 minutes (mind speed camera as they are active). You will eventually pass a Citroen garage on your right. Go over the bridge and follow road A581 Croston/Southport to the left. At the end of this road turn left. We are on the right, just after Leyland Garden Centre (approximately half mile).

From the M6 north:
Leave the M6 at Junction 28. Down the slip road turn right at the traffic lights. Turn right at the next traffic light into A49 (opposite Hayrick pub). Stay on the A49 until you come to a mini island and go straight across. At next mini island, turn right onto the A581 signposted Southport, Euxton Mills Pub. Follow this road for a couple of miles and we are on the right, just after Leyland Garden Centre.

Local attractions

Royal Umpire Caravan Park's location is right on the ball if you're game for exploring the north-west: it's easy to get to all the region's main towns and cities from here as well as the Lancashire coast just to the west and the Forest of Bowland to the north-east.

Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool don't need much of an intro from us and should probably have at least a day/night out spent in each, as should Preston, which includes the biggest gallery space in Lancashire at the Preston Free Public Library, and Bolton, found by boffins to be England's friendliest town.

Back at base, Croston is a comely, and quirky, little village: they celebrate Bastille Day here every 14 July, for example – ooh la la. Eat/drink your way around town or, for more substantial shopping, take your readies to the five floors of the Botany Bay Mill in Chorley. Cedar Farm at Mawdesley sells crafts, clothing and gifts and has a monthly farmers' market.

If the kids need mollifying after a morning at the shops, take them to Worden Park in Leyland to let off steam: it has open meadows, mature woodlands and a hedge maze to run around in, a miniature railway, nine-hole golf course and lots of wildlife to see.

Must see

  • Camelot Theme Park (4.9 kilometres)
