Royal Umpire Caravan Park: Relaxing outside the pod

General

  • Well-kept and landscaped park on the edge of Croston
  • Among meadows with well-tended garden, play area and dog exercise area
  • A 30-min drive to Southport and Preston; 50 to Liverpool/Manchester

Score. Royal Umpire Caravan Park at Leyland in Lancashire hits quite a few goals if you're looking for a holiday park within easy reach of old English villages and scenic countryside... and close to the sands at Southport as well as within easy reach of ringing the tills/partying in Preston or lighting up the kids' faces in Blackpool.

It's rather ace on site too at this neatly kept and prettily set out site, with a landscaped park and a sunken garden to sink into with a book and a cuppa. There's a mini football pitch for mini Ronaldos (there might be quite a few of these given the park's location 50 minutes from both Liverpool and Manchester), and a well-equipped play area with a soft wood bark surface, swings, slides and a climbing frame if the kids want to make a bit of a racket. The shower blocks are centrally heated and have free hot water, baby changing and disabled access.

Dogs will find Royal Umpire right in their league too, as it's dog-friendly and has a big area set aside for canine constitutionals – result.

This site is a member of Harrison Leisure UK group.

The area around was beautiful, lovely villages and towns.
Close to beautiful Southport and Blackpool.

    Disliked:

I booked site this as it appeared to have a lovely childrens area and I was to be joined by my grandchildren with my 3 daughters coming and going throughout the week.
We were in 2 cars on arrival and were advised only 1 car per pitch with the other in the car park. We were allowed to take the car down to off load and it was taken to the car park after. It was a trek from car park to the pitch. My daughters were only there one at any one time and the cars were moved after unloading bedding etc.
We felt uncomfortable from the beginning as we were on a row of mainly seasonal pitches who appeared to be talking about us and gathering, noseying and generally making it obvious we were being talked about.
Our grandchildren felt that uncomfortable they didn’t want to use the park after the first couple of days.
My second daughter turned up and again parked at the side of the pitch to unload. I immediately had a phone call from the site office. Someone had complained and could we move the extra car. I explained that she had just arrived and was unloading and would then move the car. She again said she wanted the car moved and I said we would as soon as it was unloaded.
We went into Blackpool and met another of my daughters who had just arrived and on returning to the site, she took her car down to the pitch. Again to offload bedding and clothing. It was 10.30 pm so rather than be noisy and take the car to the car park, she left it there overnight with the plan to move it the next morning. The next morning she took the car to the car park and found a laminated map of the correct parking position - perhaps you could have given us this at the start of our holiday? We were in the van all the time and perhaps someone could have spoken to us?
We were unsure which side was our grass and our neighbours had, apparently been parked on our grass leading my daughter to park on someone else’s. This pitch was empty!
The whole week we felt generally unwanted, no one said the usual good mornings and hellos you expect on a camp site.
On packing up I went out to reverse my car onto the van and the opposite pitches male came out and stood with his arms folded on the edge of his grass. He swore at us - 2 women and 2 children! It will be f****** good to see the back of you lot. He accused us of messing up the grass and said we weren’t allowed on his - we had no choice but to go onto odd bits of the grass as the road was very small. Another couple of the seasonal people were hanging out of their awnings watching us. We did retaliate but on setting off the opposite male pointed into the car at my 13 year old grandson and told him to F off you w*****.
What a horrible site. I have never had crossed words with anyone on another site, we pride ourselves on getting on with people, being quiet, not causing a fuss or making a mess. Our only crime - to park on the grass a couple of times. There was no noise from us despite there being a lot of us, we were out most days and quietly played games and watched movies at night.
There should not be a mixing of seasonal and touring pitches as the seasonal clearly become very territorial. As we were leaving, the guy from the next - seasonal - pitch turned up. He was witness to what the male was saying to us and told my daughter he was planning on leaving as it was always the same.
I feel the site didn’t help, instead of coming and talking to us, we had a fairly rude phone call and laminates.
I went into the site office to complain as we left and advised that I may be contacting the police about the males threats to my grandson. We told her that we had felt uncomfortable, spayed on, talked about all week. The woman on reception advised that she had not been there since Tuesday and knew nothing about all the complaints regarding cars and the grass.
Visit this site at your peril as you will be most unwelcome as we were.

Local attractions

Royal Umpire Caravan Park's location is right on the ball if you're game for exploring the north west: it's easy to get to all the region's main towns and cities from here as well as the Lancashire coast just to the west and the Forest of Bowland to the north east.

Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool don't need much of an intro from us and should probably have at least a day/night out spent in each, as should Preston, which includes the biggest gallery space in Lancashire at the Preston Free Public Library, and Bolton, once named by boffins as England's friendliest town.

Back at base, Croston five minutes' drive away is a comely, and quirky, little village: they celebrate Bastille Day here every 14 July, for example – ooh la la. Eat/drink your way around town at the plentiful cafés and restaurants or, for more substantial shopping, take your readies to the five floors of the Botany Bay Mill in Chorley. Cedar Farm at Mawdesley sells crafts, clothing and gifts and has a monthly farmers' market.

If the kids need mollifying after a morning at the shops, take them to Worden Park in Leyland to let off steam: it has open meadows, mature woodlands and a hedge maze to run around in, a miniature railway, nine-hole golf course and lots of wildlife to see.

Must see

  • Camelot Theme Park (4.9 kilometres)
