  • Well-kept landscaped park near Croston, 20 minutes' drive from Preston
  • A 30-minute drive from Southport; Blackpool and Lytham 45 minutes
  • Well-tended garden, play area and dog exercise area on site
Score. Royal Umpire Caravan Park in rural Lancashire hits quite a few goals if you're looking for a holiday park within easy reach of the coast, old English villages and scenic countryside. Set just outside of the scenic, close-knit village of Croston, the site is only a 20-minute drive from Preston, half an hour from Southport and 45 minutes from both Blackpool and Lytham. It's rather splendid on site too. The landscaped park is surrounded by 60 acres of countryside and has a garden area, a mini football pitch and a dog exercise area for your trusty four-legged friends. Kids can let off steam at the well-equipped play area, which has a soft wood bark surface, swings, slides and a climbing frame. Toilets and shower facilities are in a single, heated amenities block. Local village Croston, under five minutes' drive away, is a pretty little place with a 15th-century cobbled bridge over the river Yarrow, annual flower displays and traditional pubs, restaurants, cafés and shops. A pub is a two-minute walk away from the site; just over the street, it has outdoor seating and a menu full of classic pub meals.

Aries Glamping Pod camping pod (no pets)

Liked The road design of the campground is very good. The one-way road makes it convenient for drivers and increases the safety of pedestrians.

Public facilities such as toilets and playgrounds are very clean.

The decoration of Halloween is very attractive.

The camping is located close to the supermarkets and hiking trails, which increase the attraction.

There are sheep and horse near the camping. They are very friendly.

Your staff are very nice.

Disliked Two pods were stayed in on 1/11/2024. I saw that they were young people who probably did not have to take care of children. They made a lot of noise inside and outside their pods at all night.

We passed one of their pods to go to the toilet and smelt them smoking marijuana.

Hope the bathroom can provide a change of hot and cold water.

Gemini camping pod (no pets)

Liked We loved the hive. We stayed in October so the suneas shining but cold in the evening. The heating was great in the hive and the kitchen /bathroom areas had everything you needed. Clean and tidy on arrival. Our grandson loved the freedom to ride his bike all day and play on park. We had a great time.

Disliked Nothing

Gemini camping pod (no pets)

Liked Check in was easy, accommodation very comfortable and warm. Facilities were good. Nice park for the kids and open grounds for a walk.

Disliked The only slight issue I had was that the accommodation we booked wasn't the one we stayed in. Not really a whinge because they gave us 2 lodges instead of 1 big Glamping pod because there wasn't one available. Which was fine, the lady just seemed surprised that I hadn't been informed of the change.

Local attractions

Royal Umpire Caravan Park's location is right on the ball if you're game for exploring the north west: it's easy to get to all the region's main towns and cities from here as well as the Lancashire coast just to the west and the Forest of Bowland to the north east. Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool don't need much of an intro from us and should probably have at least a day/night out spent in each, as should Preston, which includes the biggest gallery space in Lancashire at the Preston Free Public Library, and Bolton, once named by boffins as England's friendliest town. If the kids need mollifying after a morning at the shops, take them to Worden Park in Leyland to let off steam: it has open meadows, mature woodlands and a hedge maze to run around in, a miniature railway, nine-hole golf course and lots of wildlife to see.
