  • Scenic off-grid campsite in the North York Moors National Park
  • A 15-minute drive to Whitby and Mallyan Spout; 10 minutes to Goathland
  • Spacious grass pitches with a communal firepit and an essentials store
What a marvellous setting indeed… with fabulous views over the Esk Valley, Mr Malcolm’s Marvellous Camping Field is a small off-grid tents-only campsite set within the North York Moors National Park and 15 minutes’ drive from seaside Whitby. Whether you’re keen to explore the area or passing through on the Coast to Coast walk, this is a peaceful spot surrounded by nature. And it's not just the views that are marvellous – the camping field (named after the father of the present owner) earns that accolade too, with spacious grass pitches (some on sloping ground) that all have those stunning views. You have the choice of chatting with fellow campers at the picnic tables, sharing a drink and tales of your day’s adventures around the communal firepit, or sparking up a barbecue (bricks are provided to keep them off the grass) back at the privacy of your tent. Weather not great? Hunker down in the communal covered area with hammocks, seating and USB charging, or head to reception for a game of table football or darts. While you’re there, source local information and buy camping essentials like firewood, barbecues, snacks and drinks from the small store. Illuminated at night by solar lighting, composting toilets, hot showers and washing-up sinks stand at the edge of the camping field. Car parking is adjacent, with wheelbarrows on hand for lugging gear to your pitch, and if you’re keen to up the eco-credentials and travel by public transport, various bus services connect with Whitby.

Liked: This campsite was perfect for us as a base to spend time on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. It is an easy walk from Grosmont Station, along a quiet lane. The facilities are superb, with plenty of parking, wheelbarrows and easy access from the carpark to the camping area. The hot water worked throughout our stay and the covered seating area was so helpful for making tea and coffee on a windy morning. The tuck shop/reception offers a great range of things to buy and rent, and everywhere is spotlessly clean: I've used my fair share of compost toilets and these are a cut above! The camping field is open enough not to feel crowded by other campers and the views are gorgeous all around. At night the stars were so clear, we spent some time just staring up at them. We will definitely be coming back to stay and to explore some of the great walking routes we saw on this trip.

Disliked: There was nothing really to dislike. I had a query about the facilities and this was handled promptly, helpfully and very graciously by our hostess, and I had the impression that any other issues would be equally well addressed.

Liked: The owners were super lovely and friendly. Facilities were always clean. Others guests were always quiet and respectful. Car park close to the pitch field. Lovely views. Close to places we wanted to visit (Robin hood’s bay, falling foss, Whitby). USB charging facilities. Condiments available for us to use were a god send when we ordered pizza.

Liked: Great facilities, hot running water, nice dry space to sit in, communal camp fire

Disliked: Owners are very strict on the campsite being a quiet space, wouldn’t recommend for those who like to have a drink on an evening

From the manager: Many thanks for staying with us recently. We are indeed a quiet, off grid low impact site that is not suited to partying. This is though clearly stated on our listing and our terms and conditions. Whilst we will do our best to take a pragmatic approach to the rules on this occasion, you gave us no option but to intervene. You were playing loud music which despite a polite reminder you proceeded to play, were then shouting to each other across the site (leading to complaints from other guests) and whilst so inebriated that you could barely walk had to be asked by us to leave another camper’s tent that you had invited yourself into and when you did leave (in a most inebriated manner) you still proceeded to shout and make out that there would be a party held at your pitch at midnight… This was totally unacceptable behaviour (on most sites I would expect). So, yes, in such circumstances where behaviour is clearly totally unacceptable, breaches terms annd conditions and negatively affecting other guests stays, we will absolutely intervene in order that other guests are able to enjoy their stay.

Excellent site very peaceful and relaxing.

Liked: Owners Gavin and Caroline are great the site is peaceful and relaxing with amazing views over the valley. The facilities are well maintained and clean. The site is about 4 miles from the Whitby park and ride which is cheaper and easier than trying to park in Whitby. Plenty of country walks in the area.

Local attractions

So much to do – so where to start? If you fancy a beach day, Whitby has a choice of sandy expanses for summer dips in the waves, while shingle Saltwick Bay (both 15 minutes’ drive) is the place for spotting black jet among the pebbles and poking around for fossils. Scarborough beach (35 minutes) is backed by a promenade lined with amusement arcades, while Runswick Bay (25 minutes) is popular with canoeists and surfers. Inland, you can spot locations from TV programmes and Harry Potter films at Goathland (10 minutes), or take a scenic steam-powered trip through the local landscapes onboard the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to Pickering (half an hour). If you’d rather explore on two legs or two wheels, there are mountain-bike and hiking trails from Dalby Forest Visitor Centre (half an hour), and dramatic waterfalls that warrant discovery too, including Falling Foss and Mallyan Spout (both 15 minutes). For even more energetic days out, try the treetop rope trails and zip wires at Go Ape Dalby (half an hour).
