  • Spacious pub site on the edge of a peaceful Yorkshire village
  • A 10-minute drive from Ingleton and 20 minutes from Kirkby Lonsdale
  • Woodland and riverside access with fishing rights
Prepare to be bowled over by this Yorkshire site – it certainly punches above its weight in terms of location and (perhaps more importantly) food. The Punch Bowl Hotel is in Low Bentham, a pretty village with community features including plentiful public footpaths, a post office and a church, plus steam trains passing by every now and then. (It's also said to be where Queen Victoria had her silk bloomers made, but that's another story…) Situated in North Yorkshire, Low Bentham is also close to the edge of Cumbria and Lancashire. Whichever of these counties you want to explore, this is a fine place to do it from – the hotel's grounds include a pub garden, a grass pitching field, private woodlands and direct access to the river Wenning, where fly fishing enthusiasts can get angling (the site has its own permits). There's plenty of space to play among the private woods and around the three green acres, and dogs are welcome to tag along too. Inside, the hotel has a restaurant serving up a menu of classic western dishes and Malaysian meals (last orders are at 8pm, and everyone's encouraged to preorder if possible). The site also has access to basic loos and showers (one toilet each for the ladies and gents, plus one shower; you'll need to bring your own toilet rolls and hand sanitisers for the facilities), plus you can use the pub loos if dining or drinking in there. There's a village shop a couple of minutes' walk from base, but if you need a supermarket make tracks for Ingleton (10 minutes' drive).

Local attractions

Ingleton (10 minutes' drive) has quite a lot to keep you popping back – there's a (seasonal) heated outdoor pool, craft shops and the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail, a five-mile circular route that takes in some of the local countryside's best watery vistas. Despite the fact that Ingleton's station has been shut for quite some time, the handsome sandstone viaduct spanning the surrounding valley is still very much intact. If the sight of all that engineering inspires you to see the Ribblehead Viaduct (20 minutes), its better-known neighbour, there's a footpath along the trackside where you can do just that. Here, you can also catch the train down to Skipton (45 minutes) or up to Carlisle (an hour and 20 minutes) on the scenic Settle to Carlisle line. Other local leisure spots include Bentham Golf Course (five minutes), Morecambe's attractive beachfront (30 minutes) and Kirkby Lonsdale's jaw-dropping Devil's Bridge (20 minutes). Travelling with kids? Take them to play knights and damsels at Lancaster Castle (30 minutes), go bowling in Morecambe (30 minutes) or cool off at Splash Park Happy Mount (30 minutes).

Powered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Absolutely nothing

Disliked: Camp site like a Building site, rubbish piled high, owners rude, toilets never flush, cold shower only, sink facility is an old toilet, whole place run down and in need of lots of TLC. Whole place was like a junk yard, dogs are dangerous almost took my child’s face off, just an unreal experience, we left the site on day 2 after booking for 7 nights… pictures looked amazing on pitch up but upon arriving it was our worst nightmare, we pitched we tried but it was not enjoyable in any way.. would not recommended

Unpowered grass tent site (forest, wild)

Liked: Good location to get to both the Yorkshire dales and north west coast at the likes of Morecambe

Disliked: Wasn’t expecting much but was expecting the facilities to at least be clean however they were very poor, leaking toilets with mushrooms growing in them, no clear indication of which tap has drinking water available from it and piles upon piles of waste in certain spots on site. Felt like anyone could have pitched a tent without needing to check in. No sign of the owners on site or on the phone number available for the site.

Unpowered grass tent site (forest, wild)

Liked: Plenty space to pitch up. Nice walks around. Not far from caves and pubs and cafes.

Disliked: Facilities disgusting- no light- bodily excretion everywhere absolutely stunk off wee- didn’t see the owners once nor did they answer the phone. No check in. No welcome no direction. Don’t know why we paid. Camp was quite loud and right next to a train line which was not mentioned.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Couldn't attend

Disliked: We were due to stay here on the 18th August, 2 of us in a tent and my parents in the site's caravan but the caravan was allegedly broken by the family staying in previously. We were only made aware of this when we called the punch bowl with an enquiry, they never bothered to contact us so had we not have had an enquiry, we may have found out when we arrived. We were initially offered a full refund which we accepted, however, there is no sign of a refund. We have called the punch bowl many times to which they very rarely answer, and when they do it's a very unhelpful young lad. Will not be booking here again

Powered grass caravan site

Liked: Ok price for electric grass pitch. Owners son is certainly doing a fantastic job, couldn’t fault at all.

Disliked: Yes I get we were emailed regarding the site couple days before, but we booked this site nearly a year in advance and didn’t expect a few days before the site to be nothing like expected. We were given opportunity to re book another time, however given 3 days before booking to find another location, which in august is not easy, so kept booking as it was. If it wasn’t for having our own shower and toilet in our caravan, personally I wouldn’t stayed longer than 30 minutes on this site. All pitches feel cramped, we requested to be pitched with our family, yes accommodated, however literally approx 3ft between our awning and tent. This site has been lucky not to have major incident with how close tents are pitched together. Personally I wouldn’t shower my dog in the showers, never mind myself, but that is personal taste, toilets were clean, floor to block very squishy, and funny smell to it, but toilets were clean. The rubbish situation is a strange one, never seen anything like it at a site before I assume they clear the bin bags mountain weekly. This is not a dig at the owners, just an honest review of my opinion of the site. Pub/eatery not running even though was advertised when we booked, I think letting people know a couple days before there holiday is not sufficient enough when they have booked a year in advance.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: The space

Disliked: The rest of it. We booked this site for 12 days and left after 3. Toilets dirty and in a wooden hut. Felt like I was in a coffin they were that small. No loo roll, super dirty and unlit. No hand wash facilities. Shower didn’t warm up. Had mushrooms growing in the space. Was filthy and falling apart. My girls got stuck in there causing mass panic. The pub was derelict. Someone came to see us when we checked in and told us to go anywhere. That’s the only time we were spoken to as no one was ever about. Three massive dogs who barked constantly through the night when anyone passed.

From the manager: The pub is not open and has not been for over a year .it is the campsite that we sell and nothing to do with pub etc.Over a year ago we ahve asked pitch up to remove about the pub anyway. The family was aware as we do so with every camper about the infomation of the campsite. 1.no toilet rolls provided. 2 toilets are small 3.no hand wash facility 4.some areas are dark please bring own torch. 5.shower is camping shower not like your house shower.it does not help that peple like you keep breaking the shower and we have to continue fixing it. 6.our dogs live within the premises and not in the field at the campsite.the field is about 3 acres large away from the private area of our dogs and they are not left outside all night. 7.the someone is our son. You had family members who stayed with us before and loved it .

I have stayed at the site twice now and will be returning.…

Unpowered grass tent site (forest, wild)

Liked: I have stayed at the site twice now and will be returning. On my arrival the second time Shanti knew who I was and welcomed me and the family back! The cost is very reasonable and the site is basic with room to stay, a shower, toilet and water tap. It's clear that this is a basic site and you will see that when booking. What was great on both occasions is the atmosphere and the hospitality. Children playing together, people laughing and just generally enjoying themselves. Fire pits are available and bbqs welcomed which makes a great outdoor experience for adults and kids with the burgers and marshmallows. My dog was well fed from jne of our neighbours who even left him a treat by the tent for when we woke up. Its a nice, friendly vibe. The hosts themselves are very welcoming and both times I have felt safe, relaxed, and enjoyed my stay. There is a private wooded area by the river which was perfect for my early morning dog walk, and the town itself is a beautiful area, with another walk by the river to get to High Bentham. Don't believe all you read regarding negative aspects, when actually none of it is even anyone's business anyway! Thanks for a lovely stay Shanti, Doug and Ash, we will see you again soon!

Unpowered grass tent site (forest, wild)

Liked: The location of the campsite was great for what we needed, it is very basic(as it says wild camping). The owners came and introduced themselves and seemed really friendly, after this they didn’t bother us at all (which was absolutely fine) they were there if we needed them. The fire pits were around the campsite and seemed to be a case of get one if you want one and find your own wood for it. The little river and woodland area was nice and the kids and the dog loved playing in the river to cool down(it was a lovely warm weekend). There is a separate water tap to the hose at the toilet area. Cheap and cheerful. We walked up Pen-y-Ghent and visited Morcambe Bay (30 mins drive), there is a brilliant kids park up in high Betham across from the spa shop - about 20-30 minutes walk away.

Disliked: I think the toilets, shower & sink (toilet bowl) with hose pipe could do with a refurbishment but was fine for our needs.
